What's the secret to life?

88 comments:

  1. Sartre said (in NO EXIT) "Hell is other people".
"Heaven" may rely on "other people". (Watch the old Twilight Zones.)
In Zen, it's chop wood, carry water.
    Jesus said love.
Seems like it's something simple beyond belief.

  26. Well, don't ask the economic reporter for the The New York Times below. His article entitled, "My Personal Credit Crisis", is about his "experience" living beyond his means, buying a home with a Liar's Loan, and being deep in debt with credit cards. It made the top of the list today. His out-of-control irresponsible spending is repugnant.

Let me remind you that he's the Times reporter meeting with big shots like Greenspan and Bernanke, so he can write us about the state of the economy. Just like bald Ali from CNN does. You know, Ali, the guy who has a degree in religion from a inky-dinky college in Canada, and who never ran a business in his life. Two "experts" passing Kool-Aid daily.

The Hope crowd is probably basing their assumptions on garbage written by reporters like him. Now, after getting up the eyeballs in debt, this 50-year old, father of two, is issuing a mea culpa, with the classic arrogance of a Times reporter. Oh and he stopped paying his mortgage for eighth months now, living for free, while collecting a $120k salary from the Times + benefits.

Please don't read the article below because you'll feel like flying to Washington to punch him and his new gold-digger wife in the mouth.

  28. Secret: At least once a day. take a moment to stop and think how good you've got it.

I see all sorts of people whose health is seriously f@cked. Many are demented, some can't breathe, others suffer constant pain, a few have a terminal diagnosis and know they're going to die.

Can you move about under your own power? Do you realise how great that is compared to someone who's had two legs amputated at the knee due to diabetes?

Can you fill your lungs with air? Do it right now -- breathe in. If your lungs had stiffened up like cardboard because your company let asbestos particles float around the factory where you made ceiling tiles, you couldn't. Contemplate how nice respirations are.

Are you in intense physical agony, right this second? If you're reading this, probably not. I'm talking about having so much pain from degenerated discs in your spine that you can't even sit up straight. When you move, does it feel like someone is stabbing your chest with knives because of broken ribs from a car crash? If the answer is no, revel in feeling good for 5 seconds.

And if your body is in such bad shape that you can't feel good for any of these reasons, there's no shame in suicide. None of us gets out alive. Years of misery are nothing to look forward to.

  43. The secret to life is to live in the present moment. Appreciate the present moment for what it is. Future and past are relative constructs and mean nothing, really.

All of our lives, lived out, are a series of present moments. We always have a choice to do whatever we want to do in this present moment. Eventually we will die and the death experience will be our last present moment. Even in that, there is beauty.

The secret to life is to remember this fact while you are being sucked into forgetting about the present by the TV, internets, realtors, the neighbor's wife, having a cold, stressing about work, rushing to take care of the kids, etc, etc. It's tough to remember the point of it all. It's about the experience.

And although there are consequences to actions you take, you can really do whatever you want. Feel like killing someone, or killing a neighborhood and then offing yourself? Go for it, enjoy the experience but be ready for the consequences. Feel like giving all your money to charity- go for it, enjoy the experience and be ready for the consequences once again.

But know this, know this important fact... God doesn't judge what you do. Because God lies within you. There is no judge for your actions, only karma that sends you back once more.

    Perhaps I've said too much.

In a nutshell here it is; don't live life in fear. But rather be happy and FEEL WITH LOTS OF EMOTION that you have what you want already and give thanks/gratitude for it. Your emotions will attract that reality into your life.

And that kids is the secret to life.

  53. At the age of 56, I believe the secret is to turn off all the noises and voices in your head and listen to your heart. Listen hard. That is where your soul resides. We are so distracted by the crush of information coming at us from all sides that we can't hear ourselves think. That's why some people meditate - to listen. The Buddha is portrayed with closed eyes, listening to the truth that lies within. Listen to what makes you happy, then pursue that. Don't let the world distract you from your own truth and your own happiness. As Socrates said: Know yourself.

  56. I have learned from this financial calamity that the secret to a good life is to be engaged in a profession that is connected with government, finance, or the real estate industry. You should have a big position in one of these institutions so you can make shitloads of money either honestly or through corruption and criminal acts. If the bottom drops out, you will be called upon to fix the problem you created, given immunity from prosecution, and showered with huge bonuses. You can then continue in your position, making even more money than you did before by accepting tens of billions of dollars in printed govt. money...and you can do it all over again down the road.

This is the secret to (a good) life.

  57. The secret to life- The one moment when you feel "true love." The one moment when you are snow skiing, sledding or quad running and you look above and say "Thanks- I fell so alive". The moment you hold someones hand that is very sick that you love so much. Life is "Moments." LIfe secrets are remembering the "Moments." Think about it.

  75. Keith, so glad you asked! I discovered years ago the secret to life! I honestly meditated on this question and pondered this topic for a long time in my life! The secret is that one should learn as much as possible about as many things as one could. If there is a secret, the only way to find it is to learn it! If this is truly not the secret, then perhaps one would learn that too, and learn what it is instead, right? Whats great about this answer is that it clearly does not rule out any of the other wonderful answers given here already. But think about this, if you analyze what sets the human animal apart from the rest of the animal kingdom, one could summarize the difference easily, as "reasoning ability" or "intellect". In Summary, One should THINK!!!!
