"The world is not going back to normal after the
magnitude of what they have done"

Greek-inspired demonstrations spread

MADRID, Spain (AP) — As Greece suffered through its sixth day of violence Thursday, there were troubling signs of unrest spreading across Europe.

Angry youths smashed shop windows, attacked banks and hurled bottles at police in small but violent protests in Spain and Denmark, while cars were set alight outside a consulate in France.

Authorities say the incidents have been isolated so far, but acknowledge concern that the Greek riots — which started over the police killing of a 15-year-old on Saturday — could be a trigger for anti-globalization groups and others outraged by economic turmoil and a lack of job opportunities.

Seems to be a growing trend. Here where I live laws don't mean a thing. We wouldn't want those guilty of breaking the laws to be held accountable. If anyone wants to see what living in anarchy and chaos is like then I invite you to the border towns of United States and Mexico border. I on a daily basis see people running stop signs and cops don't do a thing about it. Violent crime, drugs, prostitution are rampant and you can never find a cop in sight. Yet I know we have a ploice force and we the citizens pay them well and for what? Nothing!! Lawlessness is the new era of the united States. Morals (and you don't have to be religuous to have them), ethics, folowing of rule and laws is not the way of life anymore. From those who are at the bottom all the way to the richest of CEO's. I think the human race is showing more signs of being wild animals.

I wish you were right but I think you are mistaken. We have seen LA Riots haven't we. We are more on the verge of civil war in this country than many think. It may not happen tommorow, but these things take years to unfold.

And if it won't happen here then why do you own the guns. This is my very argument against gun controll. Just because things feel fine and dandy now does not mean they won't be in the future. Civil war is always an option.

The riots won't last any longer than they did in the 1960's.

Worse comes to worse, the authorities will look the other way regarding drug smuggling. Within days, the streets will become flooded with cheap available drugs. Suddenly, all of the idealistic youth of today will all zonked out in their cheap apartments hallucinating about love, peace and pizza.

R.I.P "Globalism". At least how it's practiced now.

It's starting to fall apart now. Countries protecting all their core companies now. USA backs GM, F. Germany backs BMW, Mercedes. Japan backs Toyota, Honda. As unemployment rises, watch protests soar. Then the politcians protect national companies even more. Int'l trade plummets. Eventually int'l trade goes back to what it use to be ... imports are only natural resources that can not be grown/mined/drilled for in your own country. Think bananas, coacoa beans, etc. Energy prices rise. Food production falls. The famines start in the weakest countries first. Then epidemics start.

It hath been foretold : The third horseman!!!

I admire the forbearance of the Greek police. They're being pelted with rocks, highway flares and Molotov cocktails. (Greeks and Italians seem to LOVE highway flares when they get excited. Whenever there's a big international soccer game involving one of their countries, it's like flare city here.)

But the police don't fire back with anything more lethal than water cannons of tear gas. Not that those are any fun to be on the receiving end of. But still, if that was happening in the U.S., the cops would be mowing rioters down with machine guns. And masses of Americans would be cheering "Yeah! All right! Go kill some more!"

The difference is, in European societies, the life of citizens is seen as having some value. (And in Korea and Japan too, if you remember past coverage of petrol bomb-throwing rioters there.) Just because protesters go a bit crazy, that's not seen as an excuse to murder them en masse. Don't gun down lots of your countrymen -- what a concept!

However, in the authoritan state of America, protests like that would get the instant death penalty from agents of the government. Just like communist China! And I bet that on-the-spot government death penalty would get the approval of a lot of the people who read S&A who, uh, hate government and all...

It really is funny to see the anti-european sentiment of the ignorant masses in America, 99% of whom I would wager have never been to Europe, or even outside the US.

Where does this come from? Are there talk radio talking points that are driving this home? Is it the fact that France stood up against the US on the Iraq debacle (and was proven correct)?

I really would like to know.

Europe is home of amazing arts and culture, good foods and wines, incredible architecture, an incredible mass transportation system, a long history, an educated population more interested in life than money, and incredible scenery.

On the flipside, they are waaaaay over-taxed, their governments get in the way of business, they're incredibly inefficient, their leaders are almost universally terrible, and they have a seething underclass of uneducated low-culture morons sucking on the public teet while addicted to media porn.

But all in all, for someone in the US to be ignorantly raging against the people of Europe is not only off base, it's funny.

Keith, open your eyes about Europe.

There are third generation Germans, of Turkish descent, who're still considered outsiders and denied jobs in mainstream German corporations. I know of numerous Turks, stateside, and all of them are considered White/Mediterranean, by USA standards. In America, all persons are assimilate into the various blocs of white, black, Hispanic, or Hawaiian (if they live away from the mainland). Yes, Asian-Americans don't have a segregated community within a generation or two, if they move away from a China/Korea-town or Hawaii, they're pretty much white-assimilated (see Connie Chung => Maury Popavich as an example).

The US is a far more of an accepting culture of different peoples than racist Europe who're extremely nationalistic and living off the fruits of their elders ala DaVinci, Goethe, Newton, and Mozart. Well, last I'd checked, in the 19th/20th century, the VonNeumans, Teslas, and Einsteins emigrated to the US.

Ask your South Asian (see Indian) friends in London and ask 'em how many are barristers in British courts? You see, it's still a far cry from America where South Asians have some of the top jobs in corporations, medical centers, legal firms, and media.

what Vivendi and Suez (french companies) are doing to poor 3rd world countries (privatizing public water resources) is criminal.

That is my biggest beef with the euortards. they get down on us and our corporations while blatantly ignoring what their own corporations are doing to the world. and a lot of their corporations are not truely private anyway, they are partially or majority own by the government.

That and they don't shower often enough.

:Europe is a continent

Given all the so-called ECC and EU reforms, all that says to me is 'not in my backyard', kinda like US states bickering over dumping grounds but with ethnic bigotry, "Those Albanians are %^&@!( and don't belong in Germany or France."

Yes, that's the essence of Europe. I mean let's face it, if the Spanish speaking populations in the USA spoke fluent English, and dropped bilinguil agendas in schools and companies, they'd be another group of Americans of Mediterranean descent, not perceived troublemakers.

Whoa Kieth (8:18PM),
Mellow out dude. True, the culture in Europe is pretty well regarded by the Europeans and for good reason, it's theirs. I've never been to Europe but I worked in a European colony, French Guiana. The people there are pretty mellow, including the French. So much so as to drive an impatient American engineer nuts. We waited for everything from opening doors to getting cables delivered. Increased our production time by 30%.

The people I worked with were great but not in a hurry. Dinner taken at a local restaurant took 4 to 5 hours, by the time we got to sleep it was time to get up for work.

It seemed that the only reason they worked 32 hours a week and got to enjoy their culture was due to America and China working 48 to 56 hours a week to produce the surpluses that allowed them the opportunity to do so. Sorta like Greenspan's surplus savings theory.

Yeah, they have culture and they enjoy it, but they also have the bloodiest history in the known world, and they're all related! They have the Vatican, Royal bloodlines, the rothschilds, and euthanasia.

Gotta hand it to the people though, they put up with a lot less than we do.

Keefer, this issue has been your blind spot since you invested so much time over there.

Its human nature.

If you can back away and be objective you'd see that Europeans are rotten to the core.

You have been bashing America non stop perhaps to justify your choices, and although you have been right on the Housing issue, look around you: for even the Housing issue is, was and will be uglier in Europe.

Americans are not perfect but we hate Europe because they are fake and they lie, that is why Americans don’t feel angry with China, India, Africa, even the Middle East etc.

What ticks us off about the self righteous eurotards is that they sugar coat everything, like one poster here mentioned they where against the Iraq war because they thought it was in their best interest, they would have murdered every living sole in Iraq if they thought it was in their best interest.

How bout YOU look in the mirror and stop belittling us Cowboys.

You couldn't be more correct. The Euro's operate in two of being; either they are:

1) hiding their heads in the sand from the reality around them in their countries (like islamic facism, shrinking white population, surveillance state tactics --like in
the UK, etc.),

or

2) Killing each other without mercy.

There is no such thing as a noble European.

It is just a matter of time before they effectively vanish from the earth and become a legend among the nations (keith, sorry but you'll have to come home...).

I expect this by about 2150. But I'll say my goodbye to them now:

So long suckers!

And good riddance.

Hey keith you left out universal healthcare so people who get sick can afford to see a doctor and don't end up in bankruptcy, 30 days a year of vacation and a strong social safety net if you lose your job. US government like their European counterparts is inefficent, and we don't get any of the above advantages, and the lower taxes we pay don't mean much when you're hungry, nearly homeless, sick but can't afford to see a doctor, and generally struggling to make it on WalMart wages.

Keith, you really don't know what it's like for an Indian (South Asian background) person to look for attorney jobs in Britain. It's brutal. In America, that person is automatically hired with the right experience and references even at WASPy firms with glass ceilings (provided that they had attended an ivy a/o top twenty law school).

Yes, there's pseudo-assimilation in European nations but it's a separate but not equal status. In the US, the more successful persons are educated middle eastern to south, and east Asian descendents in big cities like NY, SF, and DC. That's not the case in Europe where Indians, graduating from top schools like LSE, face discrimination in white collar professions.

The society, which is a lot like America in that regard is Australia, where despite incidental problems, the private and public sectors do their best to eliminate covert institutional racism.

Anonymous said...

"Europe is heaving with people dressed in traditional muslim or jewish garb. Heaving."

Even when they drop the clothes and suit up in a jacket and tie, if they're not fair skinned and had changed their name (i.e. Ali Kahn, to Al Caine), they'll still face discrimination in getting hired for an ordinary white collar job in Europe.

In the US, that discrimination will come in at the executive levels (ala glass ceiling) but before then, these so-called non-whites will have had enough experience to move into a better position or get their own clients from their original positions.

I worked in and traveled extensively in Europe on business, and now I am retired.

IMHO nothing has changed in thousands of years in Europe. There are those who are priveledged by old money or blood, those who buy priveledge and everyone else.

Take for instance Brit Education. Great public schools (with the exception of some London areas - just like NYC).. My Brit friends all send their kids to private school. Best chance to get into a good University. Brit social medicine?- You break an ankle? it takes two weeks to schedule surgery within the public system. If you have supplemental insurance you pay to go to the head of the line. France is the same way. If you look at it, it's no different here. IF you have money you can buy priveledge.

I feel the masses in Europe are screwed more often than in the States. We have more activist agencies, rights groups and public do-gooders here to have some coins thrown to our masses once in a while to placate them. In Europe the average lemming has no solace and will react quicker. Remember the French riots with the Muslems?

On the US side I agree with the Mexican Border situation. I frequent the Border near San Diego where I help run equipment that catches illegals crossing. The area is a war zone. All residents have bars on their windows and guns in every room of the house. the lawlessness prevades the area. I see some of those traits in Orlando where I live on the roads.

I'm movin to the Southern Hemisphere in a couple years.

I lived in Europe for six years. I had my two children there (they're dual nationals of the EU and the US). I thoroughly enjoyed my job protections, my high salary, my generous vacation benefits, my paid maternity leave, my socialized medical and dental benefits. Each child cost me about $50, including all my prenatal, labor and delivery, and in the case of my son, ten days of hospitalization for the two of us when he was born with pneumonia, in the case of my daughter who was born healthy, a week of a fulltime nurse at home. I also loved that the country was never at war (I lived in the Netherlands, and they haven't been responsible for a war in 400 years). There is today much tension between the immigrant (mostly Turkish and Moroccan Muslim) population and the native population, which is mostly Dutch white but also includes blacks from the former Netherlands Antilles, who are completely Dutch in language and culture, and Indonesians, who straddle the two cultures. It is difficult to imagine how Muslim culture and law can be reconciled with the unusually tolerant and progressive views of the Dutch. This is indeed a new type of challenge for Europeans, and yes, Americans are a few hundred years ahead of them in mixing it up racially, ethnically and religiously. Still you can't compare the peace of mind you get by living in Europe and enjoying job security, the right to health care and higher education, excellent public transportation, and as Keith mentions, a real appreciation for everything in life besides working and making money, which are apparently the ONLY things we're ever supposed to be thinking about in the USA.

Throwing incendiary devices and rocks - that sure is a funny way for the Europeans to show how much they value human life....

Some people seem to want to dismiss (or worse, glorify) the rioters just because they're young and must be idealistic or justified in rebellion. They are criminals. Criminals engage in violent rioting and looting. Sometimes they do it under the cover of political protest and sometimes they do it because they're drunk and excited about some stupid sporting event.

And, btw, Americans don't mow down innocent protesters. Ask someone who lived through the numerous LA riots or other urban US riots and watched as parts of the cities were devasted and burned - most police stood and watched.

Various posters seem to fall into two camps, alternatively admiring or disdainful of the Europeans or Americans. Having lived half my life in the US and the other half in Asia and Europe, my conclusion is this: People all over have the same capacity for good and bad. The Europeans are no better or worse than Americans. There are areas where we surpass them and vice versa.

You are very correct. I am an Indian-American. South Asians have done very well for themselves in America. But in Europe there are a lot of barriers (mainland Europe that is). I think the U.K. is a very multi-cultural society and there is less discrimination there.

I have family (they are Indians) who live in the U.K. and they are doing very well. If they moved to Germany, Italy, etc... then they would face a lot of barriers because of their race.

Trust me, America is the land of opportunity. Look how Indians, Koreans, Chinese, etc.... have done so well for themselves. All it takes is to get educated, save your money and then invest it in an enterprise you know very well.

keith,

many of us have been to europe multiple times, work with euros, and i'm sure there are those on this board who have a family member or perhaps two who are recent immigrants from across the pond.

the history of europe speaks for itself: these people are responsible for so much misery in the world - mostly in their own countries - it is NOT even debatable.

most of the countries there orient their societies to a relatively small strata of people, notwithstanding the "free" and "universal" public services they provide their subjects (yes, euros are still subjects of ingrained, legacy aristocratic and monarchist cultures).

euros are the ultimate sheeple...always led from the top, never thinking for themselves. that is why they get into trouble so often. power crazy, know-it-all elites seize control of their respective countries and the sheeple there follow them to their own destruction. it has happened time and time again; it is happening today with their push for the EU, one-world govt., so-called global warming, etc.

they are not true independent thinkers; they gravitate towards institutions to guide them through life; always trusting them to do the right thing. of course, it has always ended in disaster.

READ EUROPEAN HISTORY. YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THESE PEOPLE ONCE YOU DO!

"...When banking CEOs, Wallstreet execs, and their Gov't cronies are dragged out onto the street and executed...THEN I will pop some champagne..."

Good Lord! What an un-American, traitorous statement.

If not for them, where would our prosperity trickle down from? The parasite actually supports the host; doesn't it?

Do you mean feather-Indian or dot- Indian?

"This is indeed a new type of challenge for Europeans, and yes, Americans are a few hundred years ahead of them in mixing it up racially, ethnically and religiously."

That is not progress. That is your point of view.

"I have family (they are Indians) who live in the U.K. and they are doing very well"

The Indians in the UK, who I know of, are doing well because they're either physicians (hiding behind some high exam scores) or running their own businesses. There are a lot of areas where Indians, since '47, have lived in separate quarters from the other mixed whites (Anglo-Saxon, Slavic, to fair toned Middle Easterners) in England. If this had ended by let's say '75, when the Empire was official DOA, I would have believed that the UK had changed but in reality, it doesn't want South Asians around, outside of serving them tea or cleaning their houses. It's like the whole Mexican-American thing except for the fact that South Asians have learned English and had attended Oxbridge/LSE but don't get the respect from fellow Englishmen. In contrast, the Mexican-American communities have not risen to the challenge of dropping bilingualism and seeing the US, as a homeland. (Oh and BTW, this is also slowly changing as mixed white-hispanic marriages are altering this whole 1st language dynamic in the 2nd/3rd generations).

In contrast, in the USA, South Asians, outside of the deep south, are highly regarded in all areas of endeavors. I mean just look at non-premed Bobby Jindal or M. Night Shymalan, total American mainstream successes. Now, if Shymalan had made some better movies, since the "Sixth Sense", he would have been Spielberg's successor. In stark constrast, an Indian man will never be France's next Francois Truffaut.

Europe is a friggin cesspool. If it were not for the United States stepping in they would have wiped themselves completely off the map twice.

Fuck the Eurotrash, you think things are bad in the US? Just wait until the unemployed trash in the slums outside Paris find out that their welfare checks are getting cut. They will slit your throat and burn that whorehouse to the ground.

I can't wait to watch it burn. This time the US will not save them from themselves.

You sir have no right criticizing our country. America is the greatest nation on the face of this earth. We have given liberty, freedom, and prosperity to all four corners of the world. We Americans believe in a strict law and order society. No one in our country is above the law and no one is below it. You Australians need to learn from America instead of criticizing it.

If you are so great and righteous shit, then why do you post as an anonymous ? Don't you have a name ? Or are you ignorant ? If you are ignorant and you claim you are great, the it follows that your type of American are ignorant but trying to act great and righteous shit. Am I correct ?

Hi guys. Just to clarify for those people with the anti-Australian comments, 'Bukko in Australia' is an American citizen who lives in Australia.

Thanks.

Fellows, Australia is an America-like nation whereas Europe is the non-assimilating, continental elitist, superstate. So I have no negative comments about Oz or NZ. Those are fine nations.

Ok, so where has the so-called modern day Goethes gone wrong? Let's see... they had a 1990s civil war in Yugoslavia, did practically nothing while Slobodan Milosevic went on a genocidal crusade, and then the US came in, in '98, to help end the bloodbath in Kosovo. Well, if the Europeans had their way, all ethnic Albanians in Yugoslavia would be dead today.

In contrast, Albanians are treated as White-Mediterraneans in the US. I had Albanian-American classmates in h.s and college; none of them were treated as white trash. I also have American friends of mixed Croat & Serbian descent and guess what? The relatives aren't dividing up the neighborhoods in the midwest among themselves. (Hint: The US is no Northern Ireland, most ethnic groups live in peace and assimilate).

Next, how about the treatment of gypsies after WWII? Hmm... the Europeans treated them worse than trailer park trash and when Romania granted a slew of them citizenship, the Europeans started to treat ex-pat Romanians, as lower than in-breed Appalachian hicks of movies like 'Deliverance'. How's that for integration of whites?! Nevermind Asians and Africans who they don't even see as people.

Europe is pathetic! They live in some role playing fantasy game where everyone's a wannabe hippie/intellectual, works less than 40 hr week, and stereotypes everyone around them who're not exactly like themselves.

And then, they forget that in only two and half centuries, the US had also produced its Hawthornes, Emersons, Poes, Fitzgeralds, and Hemingways. The US didn't have, since the fall of Rome, to build its civilization, they had only since Washington's time.
