Eastern Europe braced for a violent 'spring of discontent'

Riots and street battles are set to spread through Bulgaria, Romania and the Baltic states as inflation, unemployment and racism fuel tension

Eastern Europe is heading for a violent "spring of discontent", according to experts in the region who fear that the global economic downturn is generating a dangerous popular backlash on the streets.

Hit increasingly hard by the financial crisis, countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and the Baltic states face deep political destabilisation and social strife, as well as an increase in racial tension.

Last week protesters were tear-gassed as they threw rocks at police outside parliament in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania, in a protest against an austerity package including tax rises and benefit cuts.

In Sofia, Bulgaria, 150 people were arrested and at least 30 injured in widespread violence. More than 100 were detained after street battles between security forces and demonstrators in the Latvian capital, Riga.

According to the most recent estimates, the economies of some eastern European countries, after posting double-digit growth for nearly a decade, will contract by up to 5% this year, with inflation peaking at more than 13%. Many fear Romania, which joined the EU with Bulgaria in 2007, may be the next to suffer major breakdowns in public order.

"In a few months there will be people in the streets, that much is certain," said Luca Niculescu, a media executive in Bucharest. "Every day we hear about another factory shutting or moving overseas. There is a new government that has not shown itself too effective. We have got used to very high growth rates. It's an explosive cocktail."

When people do not have jobs ,or money ,they get real funny about it
if no money is coming in . If a critical mass is reached of discontent ,than riots ,murders ,mayhem ,revolution ,or you name it can happen.

How dare the Bankers and Wall Street and the whole greed machine take their share and run and leave the World to crash .

Instead of Countries using their Military to invade other Countries ,they will be using their military to hold back their own starving and jobless people .
Prediction : many jobs in law enforcement or riot control will be available for those looking for work .

Regarding California, You are Just Plain Wrong, Wrong Again.

The Oakland 'Riots' were/are about a BART Transit officer executing a handcuffed black man while he was face down in custody.

If nothing is done about this execution, which by the way was fully taped from many angles, there will numerous more civil unrest demonstrations, and in this most obvious case they will be warranted.

Your site is spiraling down the bowl. Take another LONG trip away... Try to get SOMETHING correct today.

When's the last time you saw rioting in full prosperity swing?

I've been trying to track down a source for the bit about revolution being three meals away, but can't get a firm source - lots say Trotsky.

Bored hungry pissed off humiliated people can get ornery pretty fast though, especially if they can be convinced somebody else is to blame.

Let 'em riot. At least they won't be burning American flags - with Obama in office, America's image and reputation worldwide have SOARED.

This won't happen here in America. Those Europeans are so retarded and so are the Africans and Asians. When the going gets tough, they riot and act like animals.

When the going gets tough for us Americans, we sit down and work even harder. The rest of the world needs to model our behavior, instead of always looking down upon us.

You may or may not have heard of webbot project (urbansurvival.com/week.htm)) but it's an attempt to tap into what might be called the collective unconscious to get a head up on whats coming, via computer surfing on very large scale checking for certain phrases, language, etc.

Summer 2009 expected to be full of
plenty of the same. I didn't realize there was that much happening overseas right now though. It's not on television now is it: wouldn't want to give people ideas.I dislike and distrust crowds myself.

Yeah, I got caught in the middle of the LA riots of 92' after being in the wrong place at the wrong time - Koreatown - where I was taking an evening class. I had to dodge fire bombs that were being thrown off the freeway overpasses and hope a bullet didn't hit me on the way home. Anyone was a victim that night.

Frickin nightmare.

We have the perfect condition for rioting - unemployed, desperate people and a growing underclass of thugs, drop outs, and meth addicts.

We seem to have a longer fuse than other countries, but when it is lit, BAM...Watch Out!

buh buh aren't Europeans the geniuses, how they could be so wrong in electing the wrong governments and making the wrong choices?

They always hated the US for supposedly doing all those things, what happened? Plus, if the US are the consumerists, why is Europe rioting for money, for their housing slump, for Dolce & Gabbana Eurotrash tight and overpriced t-shirts or shades?

Funny how that works. Hey, but at least you're geniuses in geography, right? Now I let you all go back to posing at Cafés, as if you're of any relevance.

Anonymous said...

I think the problem with Europe is that 'Age of Enlightenment' persona that people carry about them when they speculate about things and it creates a phony pseudo-intellectual cafe scene. Truth is that since the days of Goethe, Brahms, and Locke, Europe's been living in its storied past then in the present where people have to work and compete successfully against east Asian societies like Korea or China.

So what's happened is that they bash Americans because outside of the academy, and in particular, haughty schools like Univ of Chicago more than a regular college, Americans are less intellectual in tone than Europeans. Well, here's the answer to that, attend an elite liberal arts college { fill in with Chicago, Yale, Swarthmore, etc } and you can also analyze the great works of yesteryear then in contributing to the present.

There have to be jobs in order for people to work. There will be chaos inside the US. Obamma is a globalist doing their bidding. They are not even talking about fixing this mess as the cure would end globalism.

The power elite are going to starve the American people to death if it means saving their global ambitions. The people are waking up to this. I've got news for you. The US military does not stand an ice cubes chance in hell against the American people. They are to heavily armed and starving people have nothing to lose. Between the Twin Shities and Clowniforna there are serious men. John Wayne type shit will take place if these elites do not pull their heads out of their asses.

Let me talk some crazy talk just for kicks:

Why don't we try an experiment where--God forbid!-- we ban pure finanical speculation so no longer can we have situations --

--where people make money not from investing in a company in the hope that the company will make a profit, but where people invest in a company in the hope that they can resell their investment share to some sucker who is deluded about the company's value.

-- where people "sell" something (a stock) which they don't even yet own.

-- where people can bet on whether there will be a default in a business transaction of which they are not even a party

Obviously some speculation exists in any investment. But can't we reduce the nature and extent of the speculation where our financial and business markets are not operated on the level of casinos?

Thank You Sir.

This site lost it when it abandoned the ideas of Ron Paul and embraced Obama and all his ideas.

This is great data Keith... thanks.

Oh come on Taco Chowder, if you are that bothered about it, why don't you make your opinions known to your local Obama campaign chapters. I believe that the idea is that the government is to be structured so that all people have an opportunity to move their thoughts to the top through a network of local, state, regional, and national caucuses/ town meetings.

You could also start a letter-writing campaign for Ron Paul to be an economic advisor. Or try writing to the President directly, he seems open-minded and I heard they redesigned the website so that you can actually send an email to the President's office now without having to go through background checks and other hassle. I hope that is true.

Also - try writing Ron Paul too and asking him how you can help him earn some sort of advisory or decision-making job. Like Fed Chief.

I know, it takes less energy to whine about it in a blog comment than to do something about it....

Heavily armed? You mean that $179 Mossberg Enforcer & maybe an SKS you've been obsessively polishing?

In the military, that is referred to as "Small Arms."

The cannon is the "Queen of the Battlefield." And a cluster bomb will do quite well for permanently quelling all large concentrations of "heavily armed" wanna-be John Waynes. Small groups are incohesive, and will be picked off, one by one.

Go back to polishing your "small arm" junior. You'll live longer.

You forgot about Detroit.

"Panic In Detroit"

He looked a lot like Che Guevara,
drove a diesel van
Kept his gun in quiet seclusion,
such a humble man
The only survivor of the National People's Gang
Panic in Detroit, I asked for an autograph
He wanted to stay home, I wish someone would phone

Panic in Detroit

He laughed at accidental sirens that broke the evening
gloom
The police had warned of repercussions

They followed none too soon
A trickle of strangers were all that were left alive
Panic in Detroit, I asked for an autograph
He wanted to stay home, I wish someone would phone

Panic in Detroit

Putting on some clothes I made my way to school
And I found my teacher
crouching in his overalls

I screamed and ran to smash my favorite slot machine
And jumped the silent cars that slept at traffic lights

Having scored a trillion dollars,
made a run back home

Found him slumped across the table.
A gun and me alone
I ran to the window. Looked for a plane or two
Panic in Detroit.
He'd left me an autograph
"Let me collect dust."
I wish someone would phone

Panic in Detroit

Regarding California, You are Just Plain Wrong, Wrong Again.

I'm sure Keith knows the reason for the Oakland riots. However, an event like that can ignite a firestorm. The fire can be fueled with unemployment, foreclosures, loss of welfare, loss of tax dollars, etc.

If people are pushed to the limit, give them a reason, any reason, and they will explode.

I see how the mllitary did in Iraq not because of a lack of power or skill but an aversion to butchering innocents. Take your f*cking blinders off. I can tell by your rant you have never been seriously involved in any real shooting. You may have spent a year in the service becoming an "Expert" with a rifle. What a joke.

I won't do any bragging about what a shooter can do. (A person who started shooting at 6 or 7 and has shot for 30 years.) As for the millitary rolling through the midwest with B-52s, assorted gun ships and heavy armor butchering all before it. Hey buddy those people are serious Americans unlike you. The army will not allow itself to be used that way no matter what men like you may want. No, the power players will have to get by without the army. That river Rubicon thing.

Orrrrrrrr they could send out a bunch of guys like you wearing black body armor to beat down the unwashed masses. Problem is, like Hitler said they would need maybe 100 million bad asses. No the American millitary is the finest fighting force in the world. They are Americans and not murders and thugs. We are talking about the midwest not the mideast. Those men wearing green might not be down with butchering their brothers, sisters, wives and daughters using heavy weapons.

Serious men do not advocate millitant behavior because they understand the dangers involved. That does not however remove the possibility. 200 years ago a bunch of John Waynes fought and bitchslapped the finest army on earth and tossed them out of this country. By the way, I don't know anyone who owns that junk "sks, mossberg crap you were jabbering about". You watch to much tv comrade rambo.

Actually cannons and mortars are notoriously ineffective in the battlefield. The only reason they continue to use them is because of their moral effect. According to the military, shells exploding everywhere are supposed to create panic, although they rarely hit targets, especially dispersed fighters.

If the military really wants to kill a shitload of people, then they are gonna do it.

But I tell you this, you might as well fight back because you got nothing to lose once they make that decision. And hey, maybe you could take a few with you...or maybe not. But why make it easy and risk free for them by going down on your knees??

Anonymous said...

The cannon is the "Queen of the Battlefield."

As a "Red Leg" field artillery surveyor, I beg to differ. Artillery is the "King of Battle", the Infantry is the "Queen of Battle".

Artillery, bringing order to what would otherwise be a disorganized rabble.

Keith,

Love the chart, I think the mainstream media will eventually pick it up. I was curious, when are you going to put the U.S. as a whole on the Panic scale?

Waiting fo the riots to erupt here in LA after the ephora of the minoritys over the Obama inaugeration turns out to have a hollow ring. When the warm spring and summer weather comes and unemployement here in LA rises to 15% overall and 50% among the unemployable ghetto youths then all hell breaks loose. Oakland was just a warm up : there will be a police involved shooting or a beating of a minority which will unleash a spasm of outrage and rioting among the UE ghetto thugs & gang bangers. Lots of foreclosed wreaks in inner LA ready to be ignited into ghetto lighting and pilot markers for the pillaging mob.
