As a single parent with no income, Nadya Suleman could receive thousands of dollars a month in government assistance. And the Medi-Cal bill for her newborns is mounting.
Nadya Suleman has 14 children, including newborn octuplets. She has no job, no income and owes $50,000 in student loans.
Suleman faces what are likely to be millions of dollars in medical bills alone, and it's increasingly likely that taxpayers will foot many of those bills.
Her family is eligible for large sums of public assistance money. Even before she gave birth to the octuplets Jan. 26, Suleman was receiving $490 in monthly food stamps, and three of her children were receiving federal supplemental security income.
Suleman's octuplets qualify for Medi-Cal, California's healthcare program for the poor. Three sources told The Times that Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Bellflower had requested reimbursement for care of the eight premature infants.
Using the 2007 average as a low estimate, Kaiser would be eligible for a combined $9,584 per day in Medi-Cal reimbursement. The babies, who are 16 days old, have already racked up a conservative $153,344 in Medi-Cal costs, not including their delivery. Kaiser doctors have said they will remain hospitalized for seven to 12 weeks. If they stay for seven weeks, the cost would be $469,616. If they stay 12 weeks, the cost would be $805,056.
Kaiser gathered 46 doctors, nurses and other medical professionals together to perform the delivery. It's unclear how much that cost and who will pay.
Between 2000 and 2008, she received $169,353 in temporary disability payments, a workers' compensation spokeswoman said.
Her workers' compensation file, obtained by The Times, indicates that a doctor hired by the state to evaluate her believes she is now eligible for permanent disability.

I like the kid too, Kieth. Fast food is among the lowest paid, thankless jobs a person can do. But you must also be good at working with the public, which even airline pilots fail at. In fact, a Burger King job often requires more than an 8th grade education; far above the intelligence of many truck drivers and most railroad engineers.
The rich may hate paying their taxes. But the debt is long overdue to the bottom-line service workers that make your burgers and take care of Grandma.

You're missing the point. His crime is that he expects Obama to get him a raise or get him better benefits or get him a better job.
It's this entitlement crap that is the problem. I worked my fair share of crappy jobs in high school and college. Not once though did it ever cross my mind to go ask the president (Bush I and then Clinton during my teens) to help me out.
It's frickin' pathetic that the president of the United States would demean himself by actually listening to piss ants like this.
If this is what America's future looks like, there truly is no hope.

Julio was so over-the-top that I thought he was being sarcastic. It took me a while to figure out his POV. Wow, he was THAT excited to meet the president! I'm more used to irony and sophistication with the college kids I know. For a few minutes I thought the Secret Service might forcibly remove him. Obama didn't seem phazed at all. That said, kudos to Julio for having a real job and holding onto it for 4 years, all the while attending school.
I have a serious problem with all these colleges and their insipid "Communications" degrees. This would have been an opportunity for Obama to point out areas where it makes sense to spend your college money. Obama is slick enough to do this without insulting anybody and the bully pulpit might at least point a few kids in a better direction. Every Miss America contestant, every person with a bad accent thinks he or she can be a sportscaster or have a radio show. At least most community colleges teach real skills like nursing, auto repair, cooking, technical skills, etc.
You know if the government is socializing so much of the economy, perhaps they have a handle on where the jobs will be. This would be more useful to most kids than a handout, especially to a hard-working kid like Julio. Oops, I forgot, they don't really have a plan, the are just "spending".
