The ignorance of economics that brought about the housing bubble and crash is similar to the ignorance of science that will cause America to fall behind if it is not addressed and conquered.
Ignorance of economics and ignorance of science is dangerous. We either have sh*tty economics and science teachers, or we have parents and others brainwashing kids to not believe their economics and science teachers.
I bet China and India aren't teaching kids to fear science.

An amendment by socialist Bernie Sanders and Republican Chuck Grassley passed by the Senate yesterday requires American companies which receive bailout money from the government to comply with “good faith” efforts to hire US workers before they look to India or elsewhere abroad for recruitment.

I've seen a detailed PowerPoint presentation of all procedures applied. Let's say five minutes in to it I had to walk out to vomit and get some air. The acid ones are really "pretty". BO would be proud to watch that one. This happens more often than you think, but hey it's "in" to hate everything. It's the new America.
But god forbid you try to control the caribou population by allowing temporary hunting. All hell breaks loose! The Hollywood-high school dropout celebs come bitching: "How dare you shoot a caribou or a duck to eat!" But they're totally ok with the atrocity above, and wear $10k leather handbags and $2k leather shoes.
I think a lot of the comments here prove your point quite well. 'Mericans are all brainwashed one way or the other (yes -- I mean on the extreme left or right) and no longer poses the critical reasoning skills necessary sort the BS from the media stream.
Remember that not all science leads to a good outcome - one example may turn out to be the environmental and health effects of nanomaterials. Blind faith in science is no better than blind faith in a deity or anything else, but it would be refreshing to see people take a few minutes and contemplate what they are being told.
I read that there is growing "bailout fatigue" in the US, but I suspect it is less about people realizing that their money has been wasted (although that is starting to creep in) than it is people simply getting tired of hearing about the bailout instead of American Idol.

I remember back when these same kooks were trying to prevent schools from teaching about tectonic plates. And funny enough, this was in California. Our teachers had to read out load that tectonic plates were only a theory and not fact. The same lack of understanding what a scientific theory is pervaded back then as well.
This is why even with incomes for engineers going up, enrollment in engineering schools is down. As a society/culture, we will never survive if we our scientific curiosity disappears. Forget about a prolonged recession or depression and start thinking about a repeat of the dark ages. Get used to being a serf to the elite wealthy.

Mrs. Bukko's best friend (aside from me) handles financial paperwork for a tax firm that does returns for big-time options traders. Her office is literally across the street from the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank. She's been doing stuff with these multi-million dollar traders for more than a decade.
She also got ripped off big-time by Charles Schwab. She had a sum in the high five figures invested with Schwab in what she thought was a "conservative" fund. Schwab shuffled it into something riskier, telling her it was as good as gold. When TSHTF last year, it evaporated. She might get back 25% of her principal, to say nothing of the gains she might have counted on for five years of giving Schwab her retirement money to play with. And the investment contract locked her into arbitration, so she has no recourse.
Mrs. Bukko and I try to talk to her about higher-level macroeconomics. We try to tell her about how the system is rigged against workers and in favour of the rich maggots. We give her specifics to illustrate how politicians, even Obama, are letting the system scam people like her.
And over the Skype line, we can figuratively hear her eyes glazing over. She thinks we're dour paranoiacs, always bagging everything, even President Hopey, whose campaign concert by The Dead (everybody who was in the Greatful Dead except Jerry) she was so chuffed to attend.
So here's an intelligent woman, working in the heart of the financial system, who's been victimised by the bankster bandits. But is SHE interested in learning about the evil within that system? Nah. Too complex. Can't be bothered. Feels like there's nothing she can do, so she tunes it out.
Even my wife, socialist hippie that she is, has gotten into reading Mish. We have great discussions about CDS's and connections between the Russian mob and stock market manipulators. We're paying attention because we know it's important.
The question is, Keith, what the hell does it take to make people like my wife's friend pay attention? I despair of anything, even impending death, would get through to them.

I own a business and I would hire a H1B candidate over an American candidate any freaking day! It's not just the money I save, it's the whole attitude. My three engineers (all Indians) work harder, work longer, at a lower pay and plus they have a better attitude! When Americans are willing to work harder and longer at a lower pay, then I will hire them. Until then, as the soup nazi would say "no job for you!".

Things never become more complex by themselves, they can only become less complex. Nothing in that video can be reproduced in a lab.
There's a major problem with the argument that faith in God or participation in religion leads only to ignorance that is harmful to society. People on the left make that argument in a way that contrasts the behavior of zealots on the right. The trouble is, there is no treatise for morality from science. Progressives "think" there is, but science offers no such moral compass. Progressives think the agnostic point of view is better for "the planet" or better for "the human race" or better for "the future", but science promises nothing of the kind. As far as science is concerned, the best possible thing for the planet may well be the elimination of all humans on earth. Murder your brother. Bomb the village. Who cares, if you can get away with it? Who gives a damn about the polar bears? You just have some chemical make-up in your Mitochondrial DNA that makes you care for fluffy mammals. Let them die. Abort an 8 month, 29 day old fetus. Whatever. One fewer human to worry about. Science doesn't teach us to save them. Science doesn't care.
By all means fight for the truth. Teach the truth. But humans need a moral treatise upon which to rest civilization. If you wish to reject the Bible and the Qu'ran, you will need to replace them. Don't believe for a minute that agnosticism and the study of science will lead to an enlightened human society. Entropy wins in the end. It may well lead to human annihilation.

Not a believer in creationism, but...
Don't know when life started. Don't when we became human beings, no matter what form we were before that. Don't know what "days" in the Bible means, but don't believe it was just yesterday. Do believe in changes in groups in order to adapt and survive. Think there is evidence for that. Do believe in teaching science, not creationism, although evolution still is a theory and that should be mentioned.
Only know that we are not so smart. We can never "do the right thing" and get it perfect. There are always unintended consequences. So we are not God, and Science has it's limitations.
Not sure about God, but if there is one, a Great Spirit, see no conflict between science and religion. Believe that if there is a God, he gave us Science. Have no problem with stem cell research. As a human (children are upset if a doll's arm is off) love the concept of "first do no harm'.
In general, why not believe in God, given the alternative? And what have you got to lose? Think that it is good for kids to hear they are loved and good and something good is expected of them. Maybe even lie and tell all the fatherless ones that their fathers were heroes and died in the war. Do believe there is evil in the world.
Agree with Ben Franklin (if there is a God) "God gave us beer so that we can be happy".
And do believe in God, because, like the drunk on the corner says -
"What do you think? I created myself?"
So, if we don't get our certain unalienable rights from God/Creator, where do we get them from?

I hope you don't let up. It doesn't matter that so many people on this forum won't listen to you no matter how often you repeat it. Critical thinking skills are part of the human survival toolkit. When we devalue math, science, and comlplementary curricula (yes, music is mathematical),we get what we have now. Alice's post sums this up a lot, as do Alan Greenspan's recent confessions. It's bad when so many people feel compelled ignore facts that conflict with their ideologies.
