Has it occurred to you yet that things will never, EVER go back to "normal"? That life as you knew it in 2006 will never, ever be the same again?

It really does feel like September 12, 2001.

It feels like it probably felt on December 8, 1941.

Things aren't going back to normal folks.

There will never again be a 'normal'. Just an adjustment to the new way.

Have you realized this yet?

Have you figured out a way to deal with it, and survive?

Is this new normal a bad thing?

I never want to go back to 2006. It was the American nightmare for me. I do hope there is something better. Giving it a lot of thought as many are I am sure.

C'mon now; there's still one good kick left in the can.

Look, life won't be really that bad for us Americans. The only big difference; we must learn to live within our means. And is that such a bad thing? We still have electricity, running water, most of us will still live in a decent place of shelter (sorry Nick, you too will have to live without your large townhouse McMansion).

I have visited poor societies and let me tell you; they have it much worse than us. Every single day is a struggle. While we Americans and Westerners get upset about this so called new reality just because we can't have a McMansion or a large 52 inch 1080P LCD HDTV?

You mean I won't have to compete with unemployed losers with unlimited credit as things like down payments and living within your means will become a way of life, not a choice??

I can handle that.

Not looking forward to a reduced income in the future, but at least I know it's coming and am ready for it.

I kind of like the challenge of cutting back on my wants, cutting it down to my actual needs and getting by on what I can make in this new economy. I have been wanting a simpler lifestyle and now I think we will be forced into one, like it or not. I plan to like it. Who needs the complication of the life we aspired to lead, always striving/straining for more more more, better better better. Enough, I say!

For the love of God, I don't know why you hate America so much Keith. You are always cheering against our great land.

America will rise out of this crisis as a stronger and wealthier nation. Afterall, it is the American way.

We Americans gave light to darkness, flight to the air, landed a man on the moon, etc....

We are a special people, a shining city on top of a hill. The entire world looks up to us for leadership and guidance during times of crisis. Time and time again America has bailed out the rest of the world during times of crisis. This time won't be any different.

America, your light has dimmed a little bit. But in no time, that light will ignite again and light up the entire world. Then the world will be guided to this great shining city on top of a hill.

It's just money, big deal. In 5-10 years we'll experience any energy crunch that will make the current hicup look like a picknic. You think the treasury or FED can inject 700 billion barrels of oil into the economy which they pull out of thin air or borrow from the Chinese? This is just the beginning of a long road down into the abyss. This was our last chance to energy independence. We blew it, game over.

We have been living in a total fiat, expanding debt monetary system for nearly 40 years. What's normal. Reality will arrive and it may really suck.

Unless we could have 9/11 investigation cover-up trials. To burn the evil doers that are within OUR US Gov - or recently left out the back door. The world knows that bush/cheney were behind the 9/11 fake attacks. A 10-year old can figure that out.

I wouldn't mind if a cute little alien crew from the heavens touched down on our planet for a few days, and decided it wasn't worth saving.

I consider it a big huge Failed Experiment, which is fine. Most experiments do fail.

Of course, I don't have kids (which I used to regret, but no longer), so... I appreciate that I think differently (and perhaps selfishly).

As far as I'm concerned, the bottom line is: as long as greed, corruption, crime... the whole list... exists, it will always be a futile effort of Good vs Evil.

(No, I haven't been in a church for... well, a long time.)

Funny how the Good vs Evil thing always seems to be the only thing that makes sense -- the common denominator in an effort to drill down to the root cause of where we sit now.

Knowing one from the other (Good and Evil), and living that way, is so fucking simple.

But there's this really heavy cinderblock tied to the ankles of our society. (That would be the one marked "Evil")

Human Nature. I'm tellin' ya.
That's the bottom line.

I call it The Crisis of Meaning for the Human Race.

No shit.

I was wondering when I was going to get to use this phrase,

You older folks can figure it out.

Things have not been right since the Supreme court gave GWB the Presidency with that bullshit ruling they came up with. It began the invalidation of the American system and rule of law. Hell, if you can steal a Presidency what else can you do? Then Enron. Then 9/11 and the inability to look the devil in the eye. Then World Com. Then came the selling of invasion of Iraq off budget. Mission Accomplished. No weapons of mass distruction. Steeling the election again in Ohio in 04. Tortue. FISA. All along letting the investment banks run treasury own pushing the ownership society. George Bush tore down with incpentence, arrogance, and indifference what World Wars and a Civil war couldn't. The Peter Principle's ultimate example.

Being on a fixed income sucks .Medical care will get worse
I think rather than better in the coming years . If the necessary needs are met ,than it won't be so bad ,but if you have a lot of people really hurting for basic needs ,this won't be pretty .

"We're not any more "special" than any other person on this earth. "

American values of individual rights, due process, no ex post facto law, need habeas corpus, trial by jury, must be proven guilty, no taxation without representation, etc. were rather unique to America when it started and are still not that common throughout the world. These values make America special.

It's the fin de siecle. America is never, I repeat never, going to regain its glory days. It will be a slide down the chute of history. Whether it will be a sudden one or a gradual one depends.

Nothing lasts forever anyway. Humans will not be the dominant lifeform on earth forever. The collapse of the American empire is another nail in the coffin for the human species. This shows that humans cannot defy fate. They have an expiry date like the dinosaurs did.

What everyone is experiencing is the decline of the American empire. The people who lived in Rome must have felt almost the same as we do now. Not quite able to take it in that their empire is doomed, but also not able to deny the signs and facts that the future is not rosy. It is a unique predicament to be in. It really is. I myself never believed I would be around to see the crumbling of the American empire, but there it is, happening right before my eyes.

Stick a straw in the ground honey its right here. Energy independence a mind game played on fools and tools. This country has more clean energy than could possibly be used in 500 years. Your masters in Washington use energy or the lack thereoff to control you.

at one time we were special. back before "progressive" judges started re-interpreting the constitution to fit today's lifestyles and "progressive" views.

back when government was for the people and not the other way around.

back before lobbyists and special interests had such a stranglehold on our government.

in 2003 to 2006 and 8 years prior i watched my banked dollar lose purchase power to housing price inflation that was not counted as inflation in the manipulated market and it would take 15 years of 20 percent interest rates for my dollar of savings to break even in purchase power

I am a British national. I find your diatribe sickening. What makes you Americans so darn special? Also, how arrogant of you to think that the rest of the world (all six billion of us) somehow or someway look towards America towards leadership? Total nonsense.

Hey anyonymous, thanks for thinking of me! I hadn't even commented on this thread.

I urge you not to forget about my wife. She had close to half a million U.S. dollars in her California state retirement account which we withdrew early and moved to Switzerland (minus the taxes we paid, of course.)

And this year, she's going to file to start collecting Social Security! (She's a bit older than me.) We reckon she might as well get some SS whilst it's available, even though she's getting burned by the lower payments you get for starting before you're 65. Mate, it's gonna be great, having that cheque from the U.S. government deposited in our American account each month.

All that is courtesy of the taxpayers, and it's all perfectly legal. I don't want to be like Nick the mortgage scammer, after all.

And I only earned $80,000 a year in San Francisco. My salary here is closer to $70,000 Aussie, which is like $50K in American money. But it's still enough for us to live comfortably. Life is good!!!!

I thought the recovery had started? I am so confused...

If things don't go back to the way they were, or at least pretty close. The economy will be in the toilet.

Hell, 2002 to 2006 only had positive GDP growth due to the housing bubble. And most of the 90s was positive due to debt/dot.com bubble...

Heck, if Americans dont get another bubble, they will be really upset.
