Here's 10 ways to balance the budget while eliminating much of our $60 trillion in debt and entitlements

Here's ten for starters. Have at it:

1) Cut military spending by 50% by 2020

2) Raise Social Security retirement age to 68 in 2015, 72 in 2025 and 75 in 2035, then reset every ten years based on life expectancy data

3) Limit medical malpractice settlements to $250,000 per person maximum

4) Balanced budget amendment (except in time of declared war against a state)

5) Legally require the President and Budget Director to submit audited financial statements that meet GAAP and the Sarbanes-Oxley criteria, under penalty of prosecution if falsified or misleading

6) Presidential line item veto

7) $1 / gallon gas tax and $1 / pack cigarette tax, plus all cigarette packaging required to be 90% harsh 'this product will kill you' graphic warning labels

8) Sell and lease-back all government buildings (except military, intelligence and legislative)

9) Eliminate the income tax and replace with a national sales tax (so that everyone pays, including realtors and strippers), and eliminate the corporate sales tax

10) Open the borders to massive legal immigration, with English language and high school degree requirement (while actively removing all illegal immigrants from the country and sealing the borders)

Most of them good ideas, but won't pass because of corporate interests.

I would say get rid of the rider bills. Why can't each bill be considered on it's own? Why are they attached to other bills? I think that is the main problem.
I think Washington should be cleaned out - isn't that what Obama promised? Let's go through HUD and others and just reduce ... is it possible?

you may has well NOT have social security if the age is that high, or at least make it optional for people who can get more return elsewhere. that's almost the average age of death.

3) Limit medical malpractice settlements to $250,000 per person maximum

too low, but some sort of cap might work

Keith, how many 68-year-olds do you know? I see a lot of them, because that's the median age in hospitals. There are a few extraordinary physical specimens capable of working at that age, but most humans are beaten down by then. I don't know many who would be capable of supporting themselves through labour.

In this modern age, has American society sunk to the point of saying "If you're old and not rich, work until you die or starve to death in a cardboard box"? That's bloody Third World standards.

How about this for a solution -- making rich people pay Social Security taxes on ALL their income, not just up to the cap, whatever it is this year. That would patch up the shortfall in the Social Security system. Sure, it's unfair to rich people. They have to pay more in than they'll ever get out of it, just to support poor people. And frankly, my dear, I don't give a shit. It's the price they pay to live in a civilised society where old people don't get left to die like mythical Eskimos on icebergs.

I'm with you on halving military spending, though. Ironic, isn't it, that will all the trillions spent to protect America from an outside "terrorist" threat, the biggest menace to the country came from its own business class. But I haven't noticed any proposal from the supposedly "liberal" Obama to reduce spending on the machinery of death.

You forgot the most important one, 25% haircut to all levels of government across the board. Everything gets slashed, programs, budgets, employess, departments, salaries, benefits, etc., etc.

In fact, with just that and the elimination of the IRS, your ten wouldn't be necessary. Not saying your ten are bad, just saying.

Anonymous said...

Lol. Raise the SS retirement age high enough, so a significant fraction of potential beneficiaries die off first. That certainly would help. Healthcare costs can also be dramatically reduced by cutting off expensive care at the end of life where a large percentage of healthcare dollars are spent. Man, it sucks to get old.

Okay ... here is mine ...

1. Reclaim the from the budget the Social Security Surplus from the last 25 years and spend it as an investment in Hospitals, Doctor Training, Nurse Training, and other Medical Research and Medical Infrastructure.

This will provide high quality health care for older people and vets. There will be enough excess capacity to provide the rest of us health care for nearly free.

2. Couple 75% of defense obligations to sales and excise taxes mapped to those defense obligations. For instance: Oil Comming from the Pusian Gulf should be taxed at a rate to pay for Gulf War I and II and any defense posture due to Iran. Throw in the war on Terror.

3. Instead of subsidizing a student loan catosrophe government should build Universities and provide stepends for maintence with a direct one-to-one coupling between tuition and salary of faculty. This will close the loop on excessing tuition very fast.

4. The same should be done at K-12 with Federal government 21st century building/facilities permanent substantial elementry/middle/high schools in every zip code. Let the states concentrate on paying for staffing.

5. Subsidize the move to small clean nuclear and solar for powering homes and buildings. Natural gas and electricity generated by large nuclear/hydro/wind for personal transportation. Couple gas and coal to agriculture so the loop is closed between growth of CO2 eating plants and the carbon produced to grow them.

6. Legalize drugs and tax them to deal with the consiquences just like we do with Cigarettes.

"1) Cut military spending by 50% by 2020"

This is inevitable, no cash for another extended Cold War.

"2) Raise Social Security retirement age to 68 in 2015, 72 in 2025 and 75 in 2035"

This is also in the works.

"3) Limit medical malpractice settlements to $250,000 per person maximum"

Nope. There's already plenty of incompetence and drug use, by physicians, even at leading hospitals like Hopkins and Harvard. If anything, these clowns need to be exposed and kicked out of the field, not sheltered. I'd say if the AMA guild is busted then this restriction could be applied, otherwise, keep up the lawsuits.

"4) Balanced budget amendment (except in time of declared war against a state)"

Nope, declaration of war is so WWII-like; decade long Vietnam conflict was an undeclared war and there will be others.

"5) Legally require the President and Budget Director to submit audited financial statements that meet GAAP and the Sarbanes-Oxley criteria, under penalty of prosecution if falsified or misleading"

Yes!

"6) Presidential line item veto"

Yes!

"7) $1 / gallon gas tax and $1 / pack cigarette tax, plus all cigarette packaging required to be 90% harsh 'this product will kill you' graphic warning labels"

Yes, except for the warnings. If people don't know by now then they're a lost cause.

"8) Sell and lease-back all government buildings (except military, intelligence and legislative)"

Nope, because it'll also extend into areas like the National Park system and that would be a travesty.

"9) Eliminate the income tax and replace with a national sales tax (so that everyone pays, including realtors and strippers), and eliminate the corporate sales tax"

Nope, I say flat national tax, roughly half of the present day income tax, and then a graduated national sales tax on non-essentials like electronics/appliances, thus preventing stagflation on commodities like corn, rice, beef, etc, since people can starve w/o them.

"10) Open the borders to massive legal immigration, with English language and high school degree requirement (while actively removing all illegal immigrants from the country and sealing the borders)"

We have 300 million people and a high birth rate, relative to all other western nations. I'd say, keep immigration restricted to persons with familial connections, star talented scientists and athletes, and non-mafia millionaires who can invest in our economy, starting with a flush $2 million USDs. In effect, it wouldn't be to dissimilar to the present day "official" business w/o the monkeying around with work visas, illegals, etc. Those on work visas would be have to be in an official queue for a green card, not an indefinite holding pattern.

"...ELIMINATE SERVICES FOR ILLEGALS!!!!..."

Of the roughly $60 Trillion we're short in the coming years, WHAT PERCENTAGE does that make up?

Social Security, debt interest, and Medicare especially are far and away the biggest problems.

"...Healthcare costs can also be dramatically reduced by cutting off expensive care at the end of life..."

We must address this; soon. But along with that a revolution in making health care a non-profit industry is necessary.

The hallmark of any scam is unnecessary complexity; our current system is a joke.

GM said recently the biggest reason they are cratering is health care cost.

We need to form patients' unions to negotiate directly with providers.

Why is the solution the enlrgement of Government. We can't solve the problem with the problem.

Plus... Who collects the National Sales Tax? I hope its not merchants. Merchants can be manipulated by their customers, are subject to their own greed, and will grow resentful about the burden of the nations tax collection. The one thing I do like about it is that it promotes recycling in that garage sales and underground economy would boom.

Government has created a problem that has made you discontent so that it may expand itself.

So why worry? He promised.

Yep. Hard working people should work until they drop dead, but no word on cutting welfare programs?

How about we get rid of all these welfare programs and let these people starve.
Gosh, maybe if they got hungry enough they would go to work and stop breeding.

Liberals suck!

Devestment said...

Try this…
Create incentive for positive behavior.

Create a giant tax reward for the first company to get 10 million sustainable environmental alt energy cars on the road.

Back our currency with governmental held commodities and issue commodity certificates redeemable in their backing, no more fiat dollars. Don’t just use gold and silver, use diamonds, gems, copper, palladium, aluminum, bronze, alternative fuel, etc.

Create an environment of savings. Make dollars a popular store of wealth and pay credible interest rates for holding them. This is a type of social security, welfare, and production insurance that is more consistent with freedom.

Before run away servitude, Americans had the time to police and take care of themselves. The more government enlarges itself, the smaller we get as citizens. In this framework we become socialist and our social behavior deteriorates.

Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to cut govt spending.

Take Farm subsidies. Despite the fact farmers have made really good money in the last 5 years, no one has been able to cut or eliminate these subsidies.

Once you expand govt, you can't cut it back. I'm afraid that Obama's stimulus plan will create a permanent budget expense.

There are a lot of departments and agencies that are pointless and useless.

Do we really need a Surgeon General?

Or a Council on Physical Fitness & Sports?

DEA?

BATF?

Dept of Education?

Admin. for Children and Families?

Admin. for Aging?

Homeland Security?

EEOC?

Research grants? Doesn't our colleges make enough money from tuition fees to pay for these grants.

and hundreds of other "little" programs that were created years ago, forgotten and unused, but still exits. Can't be eliminated because jobs can't be eliminated.

#4 is an excellent way to make sure the government has an incentive to make sure that we ARE ALWAYS AT WAR WITH SOMEONE OR OTHER AT ALL TIMES. Then, so much for cutting the military budget!

Introducing a profit model into the ownership of government buildings will drastically INCREASE the costs of government buildings. It will also mean that those buildings will pay property taxes, another increase. This will be really good though for the District of Columbia, which is property-tax-starved due to all the government land--and since I live in the District and might buy another downtown property in the future, BY ALL MEANS spread the DC tax burden to the federal government!

Here's what McCain said in the second debate that HE wanted to do:

1. Cut social security benefits for all future retirees drastically. ("Get all Reagan on our asses")
2. Use the money to continue the TAX CUTS FOR THE RICHEST AMERICANS.
3. Cut corporate taxes to the same level as Ireland's, but NOT reduce our military size, budget, and activity level to that of Ireland's.

LOL Sound's like a plan, old man!!!

with the exception of numbers 7 and 8 these ideas are wonderful and deserve to be supported.

All expensive gas will do is harm the economy unless there is a viable, commercially available alternative. To address that issue, the government should instead raise the proposed national sales tax rate (whatever that may be) by whatever percentage is necessary to get the revenue they expect to receive from the gas tax. They should dedicate the money to funding the alternative energy Manhattan Project.

Cigarette smokers are a persecuted minority that pay more than their fair share of taxes - especially the poor ones. They should raise the national sales tax rate to compensate for that revenue as well.

Sale and Leaseback is a complete waste of funds that only serve to make landlords rich in the long run. Since government's lifespan is infinite, it is a waste of money to pay increasing rent forever instead of owning outright. Its the government version of using your HELOC to buy a Hummer, a boat, and some jetskis.

In fact, it was INTENDED to be nearly the life expectancy age. And it was INTENDED to be an INSURANCE policy for those disabled by birth defects, accidents, etc, and for those who accidently reach an extreme age. Intended to keep the POOREST americans out of the gutter, NOT allow upper middle class professional retirees to pay the tax bill on their beach houses.

But Reagan and other turned that around--they said:

"Let's CRANK UP the tax burden on the middle class (but NOT the rich, they benefit from an income CAP) and then STEAL ALL THE MONEY OUT TO GIVE TO WAR PROFITEERS AND OTHER RICH PEOPLE.

This is the GREATEST TRANSFER OF WEALTH FROM THE MIDDLE CLASS TO THE RICH--and yet the Fascist republican leaders have managed to label it as "socialism", so they've got the Republidiot masses voting for people who will cut their OWN social security! (Which they will never do, since it's so profitable for their rich friends.) LOL. BRILLIANT SCAM!!!

All I know is, after a decade of my income running right at the soc sec income cap, and also getting NONE of the rebate checks this decade, very little of this decade's tax cuts for the rich or poor, no benefit from unemployment extensions, and no jobs benefit from corporate tax cuts, war spending, or stimulus packages (until this month's one), I WANT MY FUCKING SHARE OF SOC SEC!!!!

Dead on, Bukko.

Keith don't be draconian. My bad ass, ex-marine, tougher than hell dad, who would sooner bite a bullet than actually 'stoop' to take pain reliever, had his knees totally worn down by 65. The poor man couldn't walk a quarter mile without being in agony. he retired at 66, passed away extremely suddenly at 70. Are you suggesting he and folks like him shouldn't be eligible for a SS payment for the approx. 50 years the man worked and paid into the system for another 5 years?

Oh, and before anyone mentions 'going on disability', don't go there. unless you're connected, getting a disability status when older can be near impossible and hellish. Dad tried to establish his problem for years, 3 top surgeons said they couldn't help. Forget it: the govt. put him through sheer hell, questioning individual words on reports (no joke), not answering letters for months, then denying payment of basic dr. visits for unrelated and bizarre reasons, sometimes because the bills were 'too old', even though the agency themselves sat on them for so long! Then dad had to 'write a letter' and 'appeal' it. He was fighting to get bills paid for years, and eventually succeeded one by one, but it seemed he was arguing with those idiots until the day he couldn't any more. You hear about the fraud, but you DON'T hear about the sheer hell the agency puts the vast majority of honest folks through.

Oh, and before you say 'he should have had a lawyer', know in New York most lawyers won't take disability cases because it doesn't pay and the system is so draconian against non connected folks. When you do find one, it's a semi hack who has 600 other active cases.

Or, unless ya want to pay one $250 an hour...

Draconian. Let the older folks who have worked for decades have some income back, they paid for it.

Sorry for the rant y'all, but I got pissed off.

Obammmy Gimme Cheese!

Some of you don't get it. I'm not saying people have to WORK until they're 65 or 70.

I'm saying give them enough warning, let them know the social security (cheese) age is going up, and TELL THEM TO F*CKING SAVE AND GET READY FOR IT.

Then they'll save, so they can use those resources from the time they choose to stop working (say 50, or 60, or 70, or whenever), until the time the government starts giving them cheese.

Social Security got bastardized. It was for SOCIAL SECURITY. It was so old people could eat and live when they could no longer work.

It wasn't for cruises. It wasn't for country club memberships. It was for old people in their dying days. When people died at 68.

Now that ain't the case. It starts too early. It's a big baby boomer wet kiss. It's a ponzi scheme. And it must stop.

Give people in their 20s and 30s the bad news now, so they can prepare. And everything will be just fine.

Or keep pretending the money will be there for them (hint - it won't), and completely ruin their lives when they get old.

Our choice.

I see more than a few of you, like most Americans, still don't get the basic math.

We won't have the money.

Deal with it.

Keith: sorry, but screw you.

Not too long ago many pensions funds went down for good in the S&L debacle. IRA's have now tanked. Now you yourself say the government is screwing the savers. What do you expect a Joe working slob to do? Should there be no default program AT ALL to help Americans in the future that could get screwed no matter what?

OK, some are dumb. Some are not as sophisticated at *you* are. No smaeter than a lot of their older relatives, who were born simple and stupidly thought the AAA rated investments really were solid. Perhaps next year, we should blame a secretary for not hoarding gold.

Cruises, country clubs, and a wet kiss on $1,400/mo? My ass. The gov't takes a huge chunk out for many, many years worked, then in most states gives back just enough to pay the ever escalating, inflated property tax bill, a little for the Medicare bill. The supplimental charge is huge. The only security a lot of them have now is that check, courtesy of the same f*cking establishment that looked the other way when the 401's many used to 'get ready' were destroyed. And there's no saying a future saving system is going to be any cleaner or more honest.

It's not a gravy train ponzi scheme. SS has been abused and mismanaged and the funds have been raped. And folks live longer, but that doesn't mean their quality working days have been extended.

Anonymous said...

"Oh, and before anyone mentions 'going on disability', don't go there. unless you're connected, getting a disability status when older can be near impossible and hellish."

How so? I know a guy who did it at 60, and a guy who just did it at 48. Neither are connected and the 48 year-old has a criminal background.

They both jack around in the garage all day, or go out on the boat. Neither is incapable of work.

Sorry to disappoint about my savings, anonny, but I've got a shitload. Remember, I'm the guy who sold his San Francisco view house (i.e. "home on top of a hill with a fantastic ocean overlook") at the peak of the housing bubble. And my wife cashed out her California state pension before the market crashed. Even with the taxes and prepayment penalties, we still wound up with scads of simoleons to send to Switzerland. I know you'd like to imagine me impoverished when I get old, but it's not gonna happen.

And I LIKE paying more taxes. Remember, I moved from a relatively low-tax country, the U.S., to a high-tax one here. And in the U.S., my wife and I voluntaily relocated from low-tax Florida to higher-tax California. We're comfortable financially, so we don't mind sharing. "Noblesse oblige" is the term.

It would be hypocritical for me to object to taxes, because taxes pay my salary at the government-owned hospital where I work. I'm a Baby Boomer who's spent the last decade and a half taking care of people from the "Greatest Generation" when they get sick. Now I'm doing it in a socialist medical system. It's wonderful, let me tell ya.

My life is going fine, and I enjoy helping other people. Apologies for crowing, but I do it to hack you off.

I hope you're doing good things with your life, anonymous. I wish you happiness and prosperity and high taxes and socialism. That's been great for me!

Okay for the flat tax, payroll taxes on all income. That means FICA and Medical on all of Basketball and Baseball salaries and actors salaries to the max &.5 % on 40 million per year covers a lot of $100k wage slaves. So Tiger has to give up one more Rolls Royce Boo Hoo

I am ok with cut in Defense spending if all men and women under 45 are willing to be subject to a draft into the military whenever there is a threat. Are you willing to do that? 45% of the budget is for "labor" to induce military careers. Back in Vietnam when we had a draft, the figure was much lower. That is an immediate savings but each one of you would need to make an irrevocable commitment. Will each one of you US Citizens give up part of your personal life to save budget?

People over 65 are shot unless they have a setup job that takes advantage of their particular skill. There are very few of these. Do you really want a nearly blind or feeble mechanic working on your car?

Guest Workers are all registered and pay taxes and medical insurance. If the 20 million illegals did this, that would generate 10 billion in medical costs reimbursement and 15 Billion in Soc Sec premiums.

The government made a contract with the people who paid in that they would give them Social Security . You can't take doe from a person for 45 years and than just say "no dice".

Before SS the family would take care of a aging parent ,usually on a farm ,and the aged person would do as much work on the farm as they were able until they became infirm.

If you want to get rid of old people and call a age where they die ,or they are denied medical services because you consider them not-human anymore ,than do it .
But when you reach that same age and you want life ,don't go screaming about how unfair it is that you were tossed under the truck when you wanted to live . Or maybe by the time you reach a older age the younger generation will say that 50 is the age that people will be thrown on the iceberg .Maybe you will just be put in a big hole with the rest of the people your age and buried alive .

Sick people or old people are still human beings . Tackling the
corruption of the Medical field and
the unwarrented high costs is a better way of cutting down those costs . The medical profession doesn't do shit for the majority of the older ones they treat anyway . It's a racket .Actually ,the older people might live longer if they are denied medical treatment the more I think of it .

sounds like someone gets paid in cash under the table....

do states with high sales tax rates have huge black markets?

I am ok with cut in Defense spending if all men and women under 45 are willing to be subject to a draft into the military whenever there is a threat. Are you willing to do that?
==============================

we cut defense spending by finally pulling our troops out of europe.

people are all worked up about pulling troops out of iraq. heck, lets get the boys and girls out of europe now that they have been there going on 70 years.

not saying we need to become isolationist but we can definitely cut back our presence overseas.

why is withdrawing our troops from europe and "isolationist" move but it is not isolationist for europe not to have troops here in the usa or anywhere else really.
