Open thread - how'd that whole Fox News tea bag hijacking thing go over yesterday?

Libertarians say Republicans have hijacked tea party movement

As conservatives coalesce in nationwide protests against rising taxes, government spending and what they call the "bailout mentality" of President Barack Obama's Administration, the ship appears to have sprung a leak.

Rep. Ron Paul's (R-TX) media coordinator Steve Gordon decried what he characterized as an attempt by mainstream conservative Republicans to hijack a long-cherished libertarian cause. Paul was a longshot candidate for the Republican presidential nomination last year.

"It's important the people at the grassroots level stick to our guns and say no when they try to co-opt our message," Gordon said.

Keith,

You have been so wrong about Ron Paul and
BO. Just because RP chose not to self immolate on the house steps, does not mean he's lost his fire or his integrity. So, so wrong.

Hey, and Keith, why don't you start a thread on how cute that new Bo doggy is?

The majority of republicans sold their soul to satan when they gave George Bush everything he wanted without any debate. Pure loyalty was the only thing that mattered. Ron Paul and the few others like him were and still are marginalized and mocked by most republicans. Speaking of pure loyalty, Obama and his gestapo posse are no different. Americans are screwed by both parties. I am sure that there are enough democrats and republicans who share a common philosophy to tell both of their political parties to go to hell and form a third party.

i'm not 100% sure that this ralley would not have heppened had mccain been elected.

hannity and crowd did try to hijack it...not sure if it was successful.

to me the tea bag protest seeds of dissent were planted during the bush administration...think the minutemen campaign.

Dick Army was one of the main promoters of the tea party. Many at the party protested the bail outs. Dick's lobbing firm represents many corps seeking bailout money.

Are the protesters total morons?

I knew about the "Tea Party" events from my Libertarian mailing lists - then I find out through this site that all the Republicans and FOX came in like the cuckoos they are and took over the nest. They succeeded in making me be quiet about the "Tea Party" because I didn't want to be associated with those idiots.

It doesn't really matter all that much to me who is leading this tea party, the important thing is to force change and let the current powers that be stop their reckless spending and other governmental actions.

I was at a tea party here in Louisville. Over a thousand people were there, it was very interesting and very peaceful.

Keith,

I think you suffer from CNN syndrome. . .being out of the country, you filter reality with Fox, CNN, etc. You should know by now that news distorts reality - here in SD, there were maybe 75 "tea bag" people who got minimum local news coverage. . .the other 3,100,000 people in the county went to work, unemployment office, etc. and didn't know much about it. . .ditto in Canton, OH where my sister lives.

My 85 year old mother has "CNN Syndrome" also - she is shut-in, and watches CNN all day - she always calls if there is an earthquake in California and asks how I am??. . .of course the earthquake is usually 500 miles away and a 3.4 anyway. . .you need to come back stateside for a while an hang out. Day to day life hasn't changed that much. . .people still go to shopping malls (of course buy less), and eat out (at cheaper restaurants), but life goes on pretty normal.

I agree with the overall premise: we need smaller government/reduced spending.

BUT the political climate is SO nasty, nobody will stand behind the result.

On the cusp of the Greater Depression, NOW IS THE TIME to cut back?

PFFFFFFT>>>(politically.)

All this is just a big bucket of theatrical bullshit, with nothing in mind other than the endgame of blame.

Denninger asserts that there is a corresponding % increase of GDP for each added dollar of debt, and that as overall debt rises, that % decreases.

He says we must avoid the event horizon of a negative GDP contribution from new debt...or we're cooked.

We WILL reach that point, because living within our means is politically impossible.

I enjoy watching this ultimate impotence juxtaposed against the increasing need to blame somebody else for what is happening.

It is OUR SYSTEM that is the problem, and NOBODY wants to fess up to it.

What was that quote about Democracy lasting only until people realize they could vote themselves anything they wanted?

Stateside update -

Since I haven't posted here for a while, let me pontificate a bit. . ."Change has come to America, one person at a time". . .what this means is those who were living big (on credit, etc), are being forced to change their habits -either job loss, or more likely credit loss has forced this. I have lots of anecdotal evidence of downscaling - families being evicted from expensive homes/apartments, who then move in with relatives, or to smaller affordable places. People who lose their high paying jobs are now finding "temporary" work at retail, fast food, etc. Of course many of these people will find that "temporary" will last a long time.

Those of us with a large portfolios have "lost" 30% or so in value, and are also cutting back. Although I always bought with cash, I simply buy less now, and have cancelled some holidays.

Taken all together, probably about 20% has been taken off the top of the economy. . .I have noticed this figure a lot in reports. . ."Las Vegas revenue down 23%, restaurant sales off 20%, air travel down 15%, etc.

What we are seeing is a total reset of the economy, but it is taking a long time to work out. My former landlord here in SD (you may remember I finally bought at blowout prices), is having his wakeup call on rents - they started advertising at the rent I was paying - $2600 a month, and got no response. . .a few people who did show up tried to negotiate down to $1900. . . the landlord was "outraged" . . .but now he has reduced the rent, and will soon be advertising at $1900. . .so one person at a time, and one "wake-up" call at a time.

I was at the NYC Tea Party. An amazing event. Had somewhere between 3k and 5k people at City Hall. Everyone was well behaved; no craziness like you see with the Leftists.

The conservative Repubs and Libertarians turned out in force....there were no mainstream Repubs. So, in one sense this was not a regular Republican thing; those that were there are pissed off at what the Repubs have done in Congress and the White House.

I was, however, still a bit disappointed because of the heavy Republican focus of the event with the speakers. The fact is, the Repubs are as much of the problem as the Dems are. However, they have the political machine and money to pull off these kinds of rallies ($ for audio and security, and access to media to get the word out and report on them) so they were able to take over. I will admit that without Fox these rallies probably would not have gotten as many people at this juncture. This is both a good and bad thing. Good, because we need something big to get people motivated. Bad, because the GOP could take over this thing. I'm hopeful that the conservative Repubs break from the GOP and combine with Libertarians and normal Democrats to form a new movement.

It was a double edged sword in that sense: the rally was great because it was a real event with lots of decent people there...not crazy liberals, anarchists, and paid ACORN activists you always see on TV. But I did feel that it was taken over by the Repubs because of all of the radio talk show hosts and other Republican types.

I'm very concerned that the GOP is going to run this thing now and that this grass roots movement will just get consumed by it and be destroyed. The power of the Tea Parties is that they started as grass roots events with no political affiliation...that seems to have changed now but I am hopeful this is not the case.

The liberals are, of course, going ballistic about these rallies. All across America there must have been 500+ of them with millions of people attending. The Left has never done such a thing. Their jaws must still be on the floor from yesterday. It was funny to hear the MSM put down Tea Partiers as fringe people; of course when they promote their own fringe groups they put them forth as being mainstream! That's why the MSM is dying...it's a fraud.

The Left is scared; you can tell by how they ridicule the Tea Parties. Big mistake: there is a new movement coming and it will steamroll over them if it can maintain its independence from the Republican Party.

All in all, a great three hours at City Hall last night.

A man walked up to me on the street and handed me a briefcase, I asked what is this about

He said it’s for you, keep it..

Then I asked what is inside of it.

He just said - open it.

I opened it and my jaw dropped.

Inside was packed with neatly wrapped bundles of 20 dollar bills.

I asked – who are you

He said ‘I’m just a regular guy who watches Fox news’.

Me being a hard core Sasher, threw the briefcase right back at him and said

I only take things from people who watch exclusive far left media.

Thank goodness for Keefer, if it wasn’t for him I might have accepted something good from a baaaaad Fox news watcher.

Don't forget, HP was one of the first blogs anywhere promoting Ron Paul. I was posting his stuff pretty much before anyone. So got a bit of street cred here.

Ron Paul lost me when he wouldn't run as an Independent. That was it. He gave up the fight. He took our money, and then he kissed the ring of his GOP masters.

So then we had two choices, and McCainPalin was unacceptable. Thus Obama, who was far, far, far superior to McCainPalin.

That said, I still appreciate Ron Paul, but recognize that he doesn't have the fire in his belly. And his endorsement of the lunatic fringe "Constitution Party" whack-job was the last straw.

The 'movement' needs a real leader. One who'll go all the way, and never give up the fight. One who has fire in his or her belly. One who is presentable to the mainstream, and actually could get elected.

I don't see that leader.

As to this Fox News / GOP hijacking of the Ron Paul / Libertarian movement - it should REPULSE you. It should ENRAGE you. It's one of the (if not the) most blatantly contrived political moves of all time. It's so painfully obvious, and it needs to be fought.

If you attend a "tea bag" event, you're with the enemy in my book. Let the GOP take it, and bastardize it. And the real libertarians need to make damn sure Karl Rove and friends are not welcome. And Ron Paul should be at the front of the pack, calling out this fraud and charade.

But of course, he is not.

After begging for a puppy for years my mommy finally came home one day and said ‘guess what’

What?
My heart began to pump with excitement when I saw that little crate.

Here ya go said mom, and handed me the crate.

I could barley believe my eyes it was the cutest little thing I’ve ever seen.

How old is she I asked

6 weeks old my mom replied

WHAT?

My heart sank, and at that same moment handed the pup back to my mom.

I yelled on top of my lungs full of rage..

‘I asked for a 5 week old puppy’
‘Not a 6 week old puppy’

I hate you!

What I'm 100000% against is Karl Rove and Fox News co-opting this movement. They are the ENEMY. They should not be allowed to hijack this one for political points. They should be fought, and exposed for the hypocrites they are.

You are being played for fools. Rise up. Protest - but make damn sure you voice is heard - that Fox News and Karl Rove and the GOP are not in charge, and are instead THE ENEMY, and the ones responsible for this mess (along with the Dems too of course)

I certainly think most of us who participated in the rally yesterday fell the same way.

Most of us also think that Rove, Fox and the GOP haven't co-oped the movement as you portray. True, they see it and want to come along for the ride (probably more to bash Obama than solve problems) but the movement is not about them or driven by them.

The CNN's disinformation agent troll reporter asked the question to one of protesters and when the guy was giving a great answer, she immediately cut him off and attacked the movement. The rest of the protesters around booed her and CNN, as she got pissed.

She did the same thing as Anderson Cooper did to Ron Paul during the campaign debate at the Reagan Library. Do you remember how Cooper was cutting Ron Paul off and avoiding him, giving minimum time or jumping Paul's turn? That tells you something about that guy and CNN.

This is OT, but when you're in Gnome-town, have you ever eaten at Cafe Dezaley? It's a good restaurant on the other side of the Limaat from downtown, maybe 200 metres from the head of the lake, a block uphill from the river. Serves food prepared the way they do it in the French cantons of Switz. Lots of wild game like boar, venison and duck. It's our favourite resto in Zurich.

Keith, I have no problem with the republicans jumping on the bandwagon, as long as they realize they are riding in the back, not driving it.

And as we are approaching Obama's first 100 days, I suggest you put up a letter grade poll as to how he is doing. So far, I'd give him a "B". Stabilized things a bit, did some good moves with GM/Chrysler, some not so good with bailouts, but so far, he's gotten a B in my eyes.

As a Democrat- I have to say that Obama is blowing it real bad with his fiscal policies. I don't think people would be demonstrating if he had made the tough decisions- let AIG and Goldman Sachs die the death they deserve so much. I think in the end he will be a one term President because people sincerely thought that he would do things differently and create an environment where the "little guy" felt that the government really was listening to him. Now the "little guy" worst fears are coming true- "I have been duped"... You can not continue to blame the previous president for current problems forever and this is especially true when you are offering his solutions to the problems. All that is in place was started under Bush, but if the new President really thinks that everything the old guy did was horrible then he should not continue any of the old guy's ways of doing things... I am beginning to think I have entered an alternate universe where Bush is now a black guy with good language skills. In this universe, Bush even has a black wife with 2 small children. This Bush no longer tortures "enemy combatants" or chokes on pretzels! He speaks words of love and goodwill, but when you look at the fine print--- damn! those really are the same policies!!!
