Well, this should end Republican Senator Susan Collins' career
From her website (hurry, before she pulls it):
"After meeting with Mr. Obama, Sen. Collins expressed concern about a number of spending provisions, including $780 million for pandemic-flu preparedness. "I have no doubt that the president is willing to negotiate in good faith, that he wants to have a bipartisan bill," Sen. Collins said."
I guess she's in the Bobby Jindahl we don't need to monitor volcanoes or prepare for a pandemic school. Or hell, we don't need to worry about a big ol' hurricanes either.
PEOPLE OF AMERICA - VOTE THE INCOMPETENTS AND SHORT-SIGHTED OUT. REPLACE THEM WITH PEOPLE WITH BRAINS. YOU WERE WARNED.

I think it's a legitimate question - how does flu preparedness stimulate the economy?
Also, $700M is a lot of money. Nobody in the US has died from this flu without the $700M having been spent.
I'm not saying we shouldn't be prepared for viral outbreaks and potential pandemics. But you can't spend the whole budget on flu preparation - where do we draw the line?
She obviously didn't get the memo about spring-time launching of the swine flu.
Her career is indeed over. She's clearly an outsider.

Yep, let's close those borders around California, Ohio, and New York State. We should also build a tall wall around the homes of all those prep school kids who went on Spring Vacation overseas. Those are the vectors of "pandemic" most threatening to us in the US.
Actually, she is totally right. You don't put a reserve in the budget or stimulus package to deal with a full on pandemic flu. Just like you don't put in a 1 billion earmark for earthquake response. That's why we declare a state of emergency. There is a general fund for disasters and that's what should be used. Otherwise you are double counting and double budgeting.
The fact that she is being attacked for this is frankly, ridiculous.
