Ron Paul on legalizing drugs (vs. an idiot)

Legalizing drugs should be a passionate right-wing conservative issue.

They should be all for it.

But they're not.

Why not?

Because their "get government off the backs of the people" reason for being is being confused with their religious right wingnut stupidity.

THESE TWO SIDES OF THE GOP - THE LIBERTARIANS AND THE RELIGIOUS WINGNUTS - SHOULD ADMIT THAT THEY CAN NO LONGER CO-EXIST, AND THEY SHOULD MOVE ON. SPLIT UP.

THEIR CURRENT BUSINESS MODEL NO LONGER WORKS.

Ron Paul speaks the truth on this issue.

And he knows his stupid party dominated by fundamentalist wingnuts will never listen.

So leave.

Amen on this Keefer,

This Baldwin guy is truly a disgusting person in general.

It is the same with Fossil fuel, it is the conservatives that should be screaming energy independents.

But then again Ron Paul is dead wrong about the war against Islamo fascists.

Uhhh... I think that the Obama Pelosi Reid trio have no interest in legalizing drugs either, and THEY are in power.

But what the hey. Blame the religious right. Weak, and slightly dishonest.

Pwah! Baldwin "starred" in "Half Baked"?

His cameo as "The MacGyver Smoker" hardly constitutes starring. If only RP had called him out on it...

Interesting side note: Rick Steves (the dorky, soft-spoken PBS travel show host) is a HUGE legalization advocate. Who knew?

Younger generations familiar with pot think it should be legalized because you have a right not to be "hassled". Its "harmless".
I have long experience in dealing with users who have been at it for many years.
The truth is that pot is worse than tobacco when it comes to clogging your arteries. One of my acquaintances, a heavy pot user, had his attack at 37.
Sneaking money past the family to pay for it is another, usually something else is left unpaid because he or she just had to have a toke to two. All that talk about it taking away agressiveness, etc. is true. Weed smokers are the biggest pushovers in the world. Too smoked up to care about anything else. My friend Bob, he was a heavy user, he dropped over dead at 31. Think before you legalize.

And pot is different from alcohol or cigarettes how?

Spend the money on education and demand destruction. Not on trying to stop the supply.

The 'war on drugs' has been lost. Time to admit it and move on.

>And pot is different from alcohol or cigarettes how?

A work buddy or mine told me that for a 5+ year period in his 30's he smoked a lot of pot, and that now when he looks back he can see he spent that whole period living in a haze. His words.

Now he's just a semi heavy recreational drinker, like me.

I don't know much of anything about the pot issue except that it never worked for me, and hearing these words I just mentioned, which I'm just relaying. So stay off my back pot fanatics.

Amazing how the "war on drugs" types don't see the parallel abject failure of alcohol prohibition and how it empowered organized crime.

Funny that CNN chose that moron to argue for prohibition.

RE: "The truth is that pot is worse than tobacco when it comes to clogging your arteries."

French fries, bacon and double cheeseburgers glog arteries, not pot smoke, idiot.

What they should do is arrest anybody who orders a biggie fry and bacon triple-cheeseburger, slam their butt in jail, take away their driver's licence, fine them $2,500 and give them a criminal record for the rest of their life.

But noooooo, they'd rather have us buy a 12-pack of beer or gallon of whisky, pass out while driving and kill a family of 5 by running through a red light - rather than relaxing and releaving our stress with a few puffs of natural herbs.

So it continues to cost taxpayers and estimated $60,000,000,000 a year just to keep pot illegal. (thats $60 billion x 10 years = $600 Billion, or .6 Trillion over the last 10-years and another .8 Trillion over the next decade.

Now you understand why california may legalize and tax it.

Arnold is not an idiot!!!!!!!

If you dont like beer, dont drink it.

If you cant "handle" beer or wine, then you will need to go to rehab or stop drinking on your own.

If you dont like smoking pot, dont smoke it.

If you cant "handle" pot, then you will need to go to rehab or stop smoking on your own.

We need a federal emergengy marijuna tax and legalization act ASAP.

Or, hell, just keep printing that free unlimited money!

Its only $5 billion per month!

Hmmmmm..... I wonder if any schools, food banks or fire departments could use a little extra free cash?

$10 million for you, +
$10 million for you, +
$10 million for you, +
$10 million for you, +
$10 million for you, +
$10 million for you, +
$10 million for you, +
$10 million for you, +
$10 million for you, +
$10 million for you, +

= $100 million

Now, do that 50x times and you get $5 billion

So, 500 of the worst hit US schools and other programs could get $10 million each just over the FIRST MONTH!

Thats 6,000 locations getting $10 million dollar operational gifts each year!

But, noooooooooooo!!!

our elected officials say:
2+7 = 128!!!!!!!!

fvcking idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!

So with which women, Keith, do you propose to replace the ones that look at the ceiling and think of Jesus? Before you answer, know that no other women will even entertain the idea of voting GOP. There goes your brilliant advice, same as Colin Powell the guy who never got elected dog-catcher.

No different than alcohol. The issue here is consistency. The republican party is supposed to be for a small government that stays out of the day to day lives of Americans.

"The truth is that pot is worse than tobacco when it comes to clogging your arteries. One of my acquaintances, a heavy pot user, had his attack at 37."

I suspect that it was not the pot that caused this, but a general poor life style. I also no many heavy users of pot and they are extremely fit and active. Plus, smoking isn't the only way to consume. There are yummy brownies and cookies.

"Sneaking money past the family to pay for it is another, usually something else is left unpaid because he or she just had to have a toke to two."

I call bull shit here. 1) Pot isn't all that expensive. 2) Pot would be a hell of a lot cheaper if it were legalized. 3) If it were legal, you could grow it in your yard.... i.e. free

"All that talk about it taking away agressiveness, etc. is true. Weed smokers are the biggest pushovers in the world. Too smoked up to care about anything else."

Again, this is just not true. Every one I know who smokes, is active in local politics and are hard workers. I know several people at high positions in companies I have worked at who are users. They are also very aggressive people.

"My friend Bob, he was a heavy user, he dropped over dead at 31. Think before you legalize."

Again, no different than alcohol. Heavy users of alcohol don't last long.

I don't know about legalizing all drugs, but legalizing pot is a no brainer. It SHOULD be legalized, period!

Just like alcohol and prohibition, the purposed cure (e.g., jail) for the possession and use of marijuana is worse then the disease (e.g., any dangers of those acts).

Making drugs like pot illegal has empowered so many of the wrong sort of people while putting so many of the innocent users in prison, sometimes for life. I mean are you serious...; life sentences to people for selling and using something that could be used in place of parsley. Don't laugh, have you ever smoked parsley?

Marijuana has been around for as long as man can remember. It grows naturally, no real processing is required. It just so happened that many many many years ago some of it burned in a fire and people noticed that it gave the effects that is does.

There is no medical proof that it kills anymore brain cells then are naturally killed, nor is their any data to support what anonymous recently said ("One of my acquaintances, a heavy pot user, had his attack at 37."). I personally believe that is a ridiculous statement. What kind of logic can a person use to make that sort of association. I knew someone who died at 30, suddenly, no explanation. He never drank, smoked, or did anything bad/illegal. Should we say he died from pollution in the air? Global warming gasses perhaps?

I think we get out of the dark ages and start using our brains. Let's stop focusing on demonizing something, and provide people with the education to know better. While in the meantime legalize these drugs so that we can take apart the criminal cartels that feed off of us. And stop spending billions on sending non-violent offenders to jail for doing this to their own bodies. And actually make some money from the taxes of selling it.

Now that's an idea huh.

I find it ironic that one of the most danger drugs known to man, which has been proved to cause many forms of cancer, not only to the user but also to second hand individuals is legal, while pot which doesn't have 10% of that is illegal!

What this is, is one monkey telling another monkey what they can and can't do and its time to stop...

Oh, one of my close friends, who I grew up with (known since age 4), has used pot his whole life. At least a couple of joints a day. He's 39, not only graduated high school and is a productive member of society, but he has a Bachelors and Masters in Mechanical Eng. and works for Intel. He's one of the smartest guys I know. By all accounts he should be dead now, or at least an illiterate junky stealing from his friends and parents an in alleys...

Let's stop demonizing it and treat it for what it real is. Something that grows naturally and which taken responsibly takes the edge off of things for an hour or so...

Regarding car accidents and its use. Alcohol users are more likely to be emboldened to drink and drive then pot users. And unlike pot, if your drunk you'll sober up in the morning. Most people that smoke are off their high in an hour or so and are more into sitting and watching TV then driving cars. And if someone does drive while high..., its easy enough to enforce. If someone smokes pot, you can smell it off him. Its on his clothes, on his hands, in his hair. If you ever sit in a car that someone has smoked in, it reeks!!!

Plus a cop can arrest you for suspicion of driving under the influence, but a urine test of blood test is required to seal the deal. If you refuse, its an automatic DUI. Pot can be detected in urine and blood..., so the argument of not being able to catch people driving while high is without merit. And a person driving while high will also most likely fail a sobriety test performed by an officer, if the smell isn't enough to tip them off.

Just look at countries that have marijuana legalized. If it can work there, it can work here too. Let's stop feeding the criminals and spending hard earned tax dollars to be everyone's mommy and daddy.

I'm reading a book on the use and abuse of logic and this is a perfect example of a cum hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. You've drawn a conclusion from something that is not proven.

A tourist met a spanish peasant and
his wife on a train. The peasants had never seen bananas before so the tourist offered one to each of them. The man was the first to try the banana just as the train entered a tunnel. "Don't eat it" the man shouts to his wife, "they make you go blind".

If the religious right wants to remain "right", then they should stick to the founding principle of..SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!

Religious/ecclesiastical meddling in the affairs of state will only result in THE STATE DICTATING TERMS TO THE CHURCH AND THE CHURCH LOSING ITS SOVEREIGNTY.

The evidence? FEMA PASTORS!

All of you who are citing bacon, etc. as a source of clogged arteries are a crock. You are forgetting that the French have the highest cholesterol and fat food in the world and they smoke and drink all day. They have the lowest heart problems.
Pot makes people lazy and you will never make me believe otherwise because I lived through it through the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. All my pothead friends are now dead. They died in their 30s.
You'll find out, especially you Keith.

You don't normally find pot smokers out driving around running people over or swerving into oncoming traffic. You almost never hear it cited as the cause of an accident. Even if they are out driving, they're so paranoid they drive like little old ladies. Of course I wouldn't know anything about smoking pot at all - though "some" people might have done better in college if they had concentrated a little more on homework and a little less on getting buzzed. Though I remember watching people do calculus when they were high. So pot might make you lazy but it doesn't make you stupid. Pot smokers mostly only hurt their own lungs as it's often done in the privacy of ones home. Again I wouldn't know. I'm just sayin'. Legalize it and tax the heck out of it.

Being for legalizing drugs doesn't mean you use drugs

Being for gays having the right to a civil union doesn't make you gay

Being for women's rights doesn't make you a woman

I could go on

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

And if someone wants to smoke a damn plant in their living room, who is the government to tell them they cannot. Especially when that same government tells them they can drink that drink and totally lose their mind.

100 years from now people will be amazed at the issues we were still arguing in 2009.

With you 100% on this one, Keith.

Making pot illegal does nothing but waste money and empower organized crime.

And organized criminals are truly the ultimate filth on this planet - they are shameless sub-human parasites without a shred of dignity or decency.

Ah,thank you Eric "If it were legal, you could grow it in your yard.... i.e. free"

This is the bugbear. If it were legal (and easier to grow than tomatoes), why would anyone want to go in and lay a copay down so Doc HappyPen can write that expensive prescription for their arthritis? Or hell, why would anyone buy Advil, Motrin, Aleve or anything else for pain?

This is less about getting high and more about money, freedom and common sense. The economic impact of the new taxes revenues and reallocated funds from the "war on drugs" would be a pittance compared to the economic impact of a newly developed hemp industry.

If Obammy wanted to slice off Detroit some real cheese he'd start awarding federal grants for hemp processing plants.

BTW--Keith, what gives? No Bill Hicks on this topic?

Keefer -
Hmmm, rhymes with reefer. However, that aside, can you tell why legalizing it would be a good idea? You compare it to cigarettes and alcohol, but have either of those things been truly beneficial to society or people? I mean really?

Oh I know the rap, we could get taxes from it. We could save the money that we spend trying to make it illegal. But that can be applied to almost anything. We could tax and not outlaw almost anything that you can think of, afterall, for the most part they are just society norms, so change the way society looks at it and we change the law; we make money. Sorry, I did pot HEAVILY in my 20's and the only things it did for me was make my lungs less heathy (I never smoked cigarettes), it wasted my time and money and made me one lazy SOB. Oh, it also made the lure of harder drugs (which I did) much less taboo. No, there is no up side to legalizing anything more than what we have.

BuyerWillEPB said...

Keith said: "And pot is different from alcohol or cigarettes how?"

Exactly right. Alcohol is just as dangerous as Any of the other hard or soft drugs. In fact, let's stop pussyfooting around and say that "drugs" Are legal. Alcohol Is a drug, and a dangerous one at that.

According to the 14th Amendment, "No State shall...deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." If the most dangerous drug (alcohol) is legal, then all the others are inherently legal too.

If only the Supreme Court would do their f*cking job and find that either all drugs are legal or all drugs are illegal, then we could end this stupid "war on drugs" (i.e. huge profits for the military/police industrial complex).

RobertM said...

@can you tell why legalizing it would be a good idea?

Because jailing people for using it is a BAD idea and it's illegality enriches BAD people.

@ You compare it to cigarettes and alcohol, but have either of those things been truly beneficial to society or people? I mean really?

Since when does products that people enjoy have to be "beneficial" to society? Are ice cream or video games "beneficial" to society?

@...it wasted my time and money and made me one lazy SOB.

Again, so what? What business is it of yours? Who are you to tell me what I should or shouldn't do in my home? That's the point. I don't want the government telling me what to do in my home!!! Should we ban TV's because they make people lazy?

Keith, there are no "Libertarian Republicans." Ron Paul is a religious nut just like the rest of them -- complete with the racist stuff (from his newsletters), the anti-gay votes, the anti-immigrant stuff, the nationalize-womens'-uteruses stuff, etc.

Too many people see token differences (opposition to the war, opposition to a FEDERAL drug war... Paul prefers state illegalization) as "a Libertarian struggle."

It isn't. The GOP is old far-right wing angry white religious nuts like Ron Paul having minor policy disagreements with even further right old even angrier white religious nuts. No "libertarianism" to be found here.

Heck, "libertarian" Ron Paul is one of the biggest pork-barrel spenders in the Texas delegation to Congress -- spending almost 4x as much money as the #2 in his region for pork-barrel special projects.

Paultards and Obamabots are both cult-of-personality addicts who are profoundly deluded about the character of their eternal heroes. Like all people who place faith in the "goodness" of a politician, they will get their education sooner or later in the nature of those politicians.
