Did you ever think you'd live to see the day that a black American president would nominate an Hispanic woman appeals judge for the Supreme Court?
Especially after an army of coddled and corrupt white men ran the nation into the ground?
If this day doesn't give you hope for America, nothing will. And that would be too bad. Because America is moving on - with or without you.

Sure Keith, it makes a huge difference to replace those "coddled and corrupt white men" with angry and corrupt people of color. I lived in the city of Atlanta during the three decades when the white good ol' boys were swept out of power and replaced by the black power elites. The city declined in many ways, and the level of corruption soared. Now it's run by a bunch of black good 'ol boys.
Obama showed his stripes with the inane requisites he placed on Supreme court candidates. The guy is a Bolshevik with $300 ties and a nice smile. When he gets done with this country it will be a worker's paradise - just like Cuba and Venezuela.

unfortunately I think bo is playing a race card. he has nominated his "empathy candidate" and used race as a way to battle anyone who doesn't like her "ruling with empathy" style. he is trying to cast anyone who is against her nomination as a racist.
My primary interest is in getting the most qualified person for the job. If this particular person is the most qualified, then I'm happy. But if she was picked over more qualified candidates because of her race/gender then I'm not happy about. Race/gender should count for nothing in either direction.

In her speech, Judge Sotomayor questioned the famous notion — often invoked by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her retired Supreme Court colleague, Sandra Day O’Connor — that a wise old man and a wise old woman would reach the same conclusion when deciding cases.

In other words, what she says is, being an effective judge not an intellectual process. It is a gender and ethnicity experience. In her mind, superior justice is a determination of innocence or guilt made by being a judge properly biased or prejudiced with respect to gender or ethnicity. Lady justice should not have a blind fold. And "Equal Justice Under Law” should be put on a curve, using gender and ethnicity.

The possibility of supreme court openings was the #1 reason I supported Obama. One wingnut right winger replacing any of the left or center would have been catastrophic for the US. Now we just replace one with someone similar and the court maintains balance. It's still too fringe right wing, but it's near balance. If Scalia, Alito or Thomas go away in the next seven years though, then we'll be getting somewhere.

Rail all you like about Justice Thomas, it won't change the reality Keith. He is extremely competent and the only originalist on the court. I know that doesn't sit well with people like you and the Messiah.
Something most people don't know: Ruth Ginsberg and Clarence Thomas are very close, and their friendship predates their appointments to the Supreme Court.
Let me give you a simple formula for not pissing of us "white guys" when it comes to elected or appointed officials.
Person of color selected + merit + no mention of race = WE are happy
Person of color selected + questionable merit + race shoved in our face = WE are PISSED.
Having clerked on the US Court of Appeals, worked at a white shoe firm in DC, and being generally familiar with the ways of el law, I applaud this decision. Sotomayor was a very well respected federal district court judge, and serves as a highly regarded appeals court judge on one of the best Circuits (the 2nd) in the land. And yes, she graduated summa from Princeton and later, from Yale law school. So there's that.
So she's no dummy. I don't agree with her on everything, but she's smart and deliberate. And Keith's right, intelligence is important in this particular job, above everything.
And while I do agree that Thomas is a subpar SCT Justice, he's no Sarah Palin. Come on, Keith. Even I wont go that far.

also, you are too fixated on race, ethnicity, gender, etc.; none of these things makes a difference; what makes the difference is ideas. if the new supreme court candidate's ideas are good then great. if they are bad, then toss her.
we'll have to look at her record to see if she shows too much bias or radicalness. if she does, then she should be tossed. if she's middle of the road, then she should be confirmed.

In his announcement today of his first nominee to the Court, President Obama quickly brought back memories of why the country elected him.
I was in the White House in 1981 when President Reagan nominated Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman to join the Court, and I can remember greeting her in Chief of Staff Jim Baker’s office just before the announcement. It was Reagan’s first nomination, too – a highly symbolic occasion – and enormous pride flowed through every one of us present that day.
President Obama’s announcement stirred those same, overwhelming feelings. It is said that a president campaigns in poetry and governs in prose. Today was almost all poetry. It is likely to be remembered as one of the President’s finest hours.

they do here in oregon. they can get healthcare paid for by the state, an education, and welfare.
In the cases where the Supreme Court has been criticized for appearing to "serve" the interests of undocumented workers, the Court was simply limiting the application of law against those over whom there is no official jurisdiction. If that interpretation of law constitutes "service" to these people, then you may need to dig up Thomas Jefferson and his crew and let them know they screwed up. LOL

I think the real problem in the US, is that morals and ethics went out the window in the last few years. That's what has to come back before any real business can be done.
