Just in case things don't turn out so swell

1) Do you know how to garden and raise your own food?

2) Do you own a gun and know how to use it?

3) Can you live with no income or fiat money for two years?

4) Do you own physical gold?

5) Does your family support the fact that you're a (prepared) nut?

6) Do you consider yourself sane?

7) What are the odds we go off the charts? Or have we already hit bottom?

I think it's pathetically sad that we see being self sufficient and capable of defending oneself and one's family with a firearm as "nutty". Were the founders of America "nutty"?

No, "we" don't see being prepared as being nutty or insane

Society does

Very important distinction.

That said, I can't garden and don't own a gun. If it all goes to sh*t, I'm toast. And I'll be thinking of roccman sitting up there in the wildnerness with his food and guns, sitting pretty

And the mormons too. They've got a year's worth of supplies, yes?

Anyone take my recommendation and read "last light"?

I'm Mormon (and no,... I don't hate my gay brothers). Ours is a philosophy of working for the best, yet preparing for predicted tough times. While attending a Baptist meeting in Iraq, (I'm Army Res; 2x tours) the pastor said” to be relevant in preaching, you must prepare your sermon with the Bible in one hand, and today’s newspaper in the other” I agree. Look at the rhetoric coming from Iran and Israel, India and Pakistan; all nuclear powers.

On a long enuff time line; yes, it will unravel with a resulting body count in the millions.

Imagine this scenario:

A small nuclear conflict erupts in the Middle East destroying several countries and much of the world's oil supply. Airbursts knock out more than half of the world's satellite communications systems. Due to favorable weather conditions, fall-out over the United States is not life threatening -- as it is in part of Europe, Japan and the Far East -- and the EMP damage to our electronic systems is minimal.

However life as we know it is disrupted as fuel prices reach $10 and then $20 per gallon.
Fruits and vegetables grown in Florida and California can't reach markets in other states. Corn and wheat crops are abundant, but farmers don't have the fuel to run harvesters. And those that do, fill their silos, but the grain can't reach the market.

Store shelves are emptied in two days of panicked buying that sees a five-pound bag of flour go from $1.89 to $15.99.

The weakened economy goes into a total tailspin, and inflation reaches 400% in the first two weeks. You're lucky you still have a job, but you wonder how you'll get there without the car.

President BO tries to regain control of the country by releasing stocks of food and oil, but it's just a drop in the bucket. In a measure of how bad things have become, he declares marshal law and nationalizes all oil refineries and oil reserves. Suddenly, Uncle Sam is the only gas station on the block, and they're not pumping for anybody, no matter how much silver you cross their palms with.

Riots break out in 17 major cities and the National Guard must be called out. LA burns as does Philadelphia. There's a national curfew and trouble makers are hauled off to camps.

Suddenly, the two weeks of food in your pantry looks frighteningly small. You wish you had more room on your credit card, but then, smart merchants are only accepting cash. You can't wait for the few tomato plants and cucumbers you have growing in the back yard to bear. But you know it won't be enough.

Winter’s coming, and the papers say the utilities can't guarantee there will be enough gas or electric to heat peoples' homes.

Now then, who's kooky for being prepared?

9)do you have enough gold or,cash for kidnappings?

10)can you create alliances or bring people in your community closer for protection?

most of what you'll hoard you'll end up sharing or have it taken from you.

just remember, selfish pricks die ugly deaths.and if you bunker down, they'll smoke you out of your hole...

I think being self-sufficient is not only an important life skill, it's also noble.

Being able to support yourself and your family is (or should) be an instinctive trait.

However, being so focused on preserving your own wealth and protecting everything you own with guns is quite sad.

I would not even put the "owning a gun" onto the list you have posted here. If you have to have a weapon, it should be a rifle!

How the hell do you hunt with a gun? Close range hunting? If you can get that close, you can use a good knife or a bow and arrow.

Defending yourself with a gun is in 99% of the cases the absolute wrong thing to do. And sorry to break the bad news to all you end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it-alls - the world will keep on turning and most people will continue to behave in generally predictable ways. I said MOST people.

Let's take a poll shall we?

How many of you have needed to use a gun to defend yourself ever? (let's exclude soilders and ex-soilders for the moment)? How many of you have acutally killed somebody with a firearm in self-defense?

How about working TOGETHER instead of every man for himself. It's pitiful. Me, me, me, mine, mine, mine, screw everybody else. I'll be up in the woods eating my bark, roots, and berries and sitting there trigger happy ready to shoot the wind and that rustling in the leaves.

Please go up there and stay there will ya. The rest of us will stay down here and work it out while you all turn into gollum-like creatures hovelled up in your leaky caves and lean-tos.

Ok, shoot me down. I know this format always leads to hyperbole.

If we were all sitting in a pub, we'd be more civil, that is until the beer and peanuts ran out, then the guns would come out.

Here in England, where guns are banned, when or if it all broke down, they'd go at each other with knives and clubs.

Something to think about.

Do you seriously believe that when "things" break down that the police will act with tolerance?

Riots and looting happen because people are fed up but they know that most likely they won't be getting shot by the police, that's why they throw things, push up against police lines, set fire to police cars, etc.

If things really "break down", I don't think the police or army or national guard are going to be giving a second thought to what they are supposed to do. They will be cutting down the masses with machine guns, tanks, etc. until the crazies obey their instructions to cease and desist. And they will win. They will suppress any civil unrest where and when it crops up until order is restored.

This is why gangs still exist. Because they know they won't be shot dead on sight. If you implemented a shoot first ask questions later policy in crime-ridden neighborhoods, the problem would be gone in a matter of days.

So no mass riots will last for more than a few hours once this "shock and awe" policy finally gets implemented.

Hate it or love it. It will happen this way and those old songs like "4 dead in ohio" will seem rather quaint.

I've only told a couple of people that I've stocked up enough to get myself and my wife through about 4 months. The looks that I get from those couple of people are enough to convince me that there aren't many people out there that could go a week, let alone a year.

We also have basic emergency medical supplies too.

God help us all if it really does come to that.

Guns? Check - ammo also
Use them? U bet
Live with no income? Yes, we have a plan B
Gold? some but not a lot
Family support? somewhat
Sane? mostly
Odds of implosion? I'm not sure --

Over a longer period, the implosion odds increase as energy AND natural resource (clean water, soil, ores, etc) deplete or are destroyed. I just can't put a rational window on the destruction, and there could still be ways of avoiding it.

1) Do you know how to garden and raise your own food?
Yep, got 5 acres and a well. Enough for food and fire wood.
2) Do you own a gun and know how to use it?
Yep.
3) Can you live with no income or fiat money for two years?
It’ll be rough but doable.
4) Do you own physical gold?
Some gold and silver. Better stock up on stuff you can trade on the black market or use yourself if things turn out fine. Booze, soap, razor blades (go dull after a few years), tooth paste, tobacco, canned food, tools, etc. All those will yield higher returns in an underground economy than gold or silver. Study the black market in Weimar Germany or after WW II, more recently the collapse of the Soviet Union. That should give you a pretty good idea of what we’re in for.
5) Does your family support the fact that you're a (prepared) nut?
First they though I was out of my mind, the longer this thing drags on the more supportive they become.
6) Do you consider yourself sane?
Absolutely, it’s most of the rest of this country that has lost their minds.
7) What are the odds we go off the charts? Or have we already hit bottom?
Maybe we’ve already hit bottom, maybe we’re just at the beginning. You ask 10 “experts” and you get 10 different answers. It is certainly the end of an era. “Buy now, pay later/never” is over.A lot depends on stupid foreigners and their willingness to fund our spending spree. But don’t worry, peak oil is just around the next corner.
8) Home improvements.
While everybody else was creaming their pants about granite counter tops and marble floors I was working on a few improvements myself.Wood stove, insulation, geo-sourced heating system, well with hand pump, 200 gallon water tank, solar water heater. It’s nice to flush the toilet or take a warm shower even if the world is going to hell.

What exactly happens after 2 years?

Again -

It will not be business as ususal...it cannot be.

Peak energy has already left the building.

Our population will reach an eqilibrium with the available resources on the planet...and we will go through a massive die off to get there.

The only outstanding question is do we nuc ourselves along that journey.

I think we do.

BTW - seems as though Pakistan and India are ...well...talking the W word.

Some days I wonder if there's a 'reset button'.

I'm an optimist. I still believe there is, that we'll come out of this smarter, we'll make big decisions that have been put off by the baby boomers for a generation, and we'll move on.

But...

There exists a real chance that this financial debacle cannot be reset. That it truly all falls apart now. That what seems like a bottom today could still be early innings.

What would cause a total meltdown?

If the fiat currencies of the world collapsed. Especially the dollar and pound.

That would do it I think. If the paper that everyone has hoarded around the world became worthless.

Get popcorn.

It doesn’t matter if Obama puts together a miracle economic recovery plan which actually works. Within 3-5 years the security services of our buddy, Pakistan, will happily slip a nuclear device or two to a group of Muslim Extremists (did I just repeat myself there?). And regardless in which cities the device(s) are set off, the fact that the Extremists have access to nuclear weapons will cause a permanent economic meltdown and a virtual abandonment of major cities by the power elites. All cities will end up half-abandoned and filled only with the poor, sick, and insane. A drive through Detroit will give you an idea what that will look like.

When that time comes, the little lean-to you have pictured will be considered high-end middle class housing.

Sorry to be a party-pooper, but although the economy is going to hell in a handbasket, I don't believe we are going to go into survivalist mode in the USA. We have what we need to be self-sufficient here. We have oil we have been sitting on, we have wood, we have crops, we have a great highway and train network.
There will be riots in the cities. That I agree with. But it's a matter of attitude rather than necessity. Who riots in the USA, and why? Read "Burn, Baby Burn" by Jon Bean http://tinyurl.com/4aulm
which discusses the 1968 LA riots.
Most of the USA lies outside of urban areas, and individuals don't need to know how to grow crops, or slaughter livestock. All need to contribute what they can to the community. Even if that means just muscle power.
However, I would not be surprised to see much of the rest of the world in turmoil. The Chinese have gotten very spoiled with our jobs and money over the years. So has India. If we stop exporting food, much of the world will be in trouble.
We are also not surrounded by many countries. Canada and Mexico are not attacking anytime soon (although Mexico has been infiltrating for years, but no more boom, no more jobs, hee-hee).
Look at previous crashes in the USA, and a Civil War to boot. We came out just fine.
What I would like to see as a result of the crash is a more agrarian based economy with people dispersing out from the cities and back into the countryside. Let the bankers go to hell, let the corrupt institutions fail. All we have to do is stop spending above our means.

Since the beginning of this year 3,000 factories have gone out of business and having flooded into the cities for two decades, China's peasant farmers are now heading back to their villages, back to a life on the land.

Several hundred thousand workers already with no jobs, have found that city life has quickly lost its allure. The phenomenon is clearly worrying China's government. The country's premier, Wen Jiabao, recently said that the impact of the financial crisis in China was "worse than expected". His government has launched a $562bn stimulus package, much of which will be spent on infrastructure projects like ports and roads - aimed at boosting domestic consumption as export demand falls off. Any government fears large numbers of people moving around.

You're right, we still could feed ourselves. Many other places are not in as fortunate a position. Still, having to rely on domestic energy sources would pretty much eliminate the use of private automobiles from the menu.

1) Do you know how to garden and raise your own food?
- Yes. Planted fruit trees, berries, and nuts. Got a large vegetable garden and two greenhouses. Next on the list – goats & chickens

2) Do you own a gun and know how to use it?
- Try breaking into my home and you will find out…

3) Can you live with no income or fiat money for two years?
- If TSHTF, what use is cash? Might start stocking up on old ‘junk’ silver coins just in case it may come in handy. The garden, fruit trees produce more than my family can use, so the extra food may be used in bartering, and a barter system is where we’re all headed if things really fall apart.

So the roundabout answer to your question is that more preparation still needs to be done.

4) Do you own physical gold?
- Of course. What use if ‘paper’ Gold?

5) Does your family support the fact that you're a (prepared) nut?
- Wifey recently commented, “Would you please quit buying canned food? Where are we going to store it all?”
Translation: Not really.

6) Do you consider yourself sane?
- Of course. Every individual considers themself perfectly sane and normal, yet believe that the rest of the world is crazy.
That’s human nature.

7) What are the odds we go off the charts?
- It’s almost a matter of WHEN and not IF. Could be a number of years, but look at the writing on the wall – it is right there plain enough for everybody to see. There is still time to prepart for what’s coming; the question is how long?

Or have we already hit bottom?
- Uh…that would definitely be a “No,”

3) Can you live with no income or fiat money for two years?

4) Do you own physical gold?

Gold? What Gold? Does that answer your question?

5) Does your family support the fact that you're a (prepared) nut?

Yes

6) Do you consider yourself sane?

Sane, Yes. But I am probably a little touched in the head :-)

7) What are the odds we go off the charts? Or have we already hit bottom?

I think they are low. After watching the rest of the world continuing to accept our total bullshit, I think we get out of this with some pain, but not a total meltdown.

The ones who understand that life COULD go back to the typical life of the 1700-1800s.

Those who don't come to terms with this and refuse to accept the new realities will die off quickly. Think of all the entitled pretty people out there... most of them probably have an easy breaking point. They won't last long.

Everyone would be wise to consider Anon's alternative questions posted above...

(The armchair armageddon lovers sadly manifest the overly-amped, overly-surroundsounded, overly grandiose and utterly narcissistic imagination of a passive entertainment-addicted couch potato society.)

Read up on human history, folks: the wimpers far out weigh the bangs... Think practically. Reinforce your own inner moral compass and personal grit. Make an effort to become aquainted with each person who lives on your street. Start a neighborhood watch program. Complete your own "earthquake" pantry, and include enough to share with the children you know by name in other households on your block. Cultivate one useful new hobby or practice in the new year: fishing, bow-hunting, seed saving, mending, bike repair, etc. Look at your households inputs and outputs and make a concerted effort to get comfortable with less.

The bangs have a way of taking care of themselves. Think Vesuvius. Its the wimpers that require the very best we humans have to offer one another.

It can't be said often enough -- read this Argentine guy's urban survivalist blog if you want to see what life would be like after an urban collapse in the U.S.

That was a country with a relatively high standard of living that fell apart suddenly because of stupid economic decisions made by idiot politicians. It didn't go all "cities-burning, hole-up-in-country-hideouts-to-escape-the ravaging hordes." In fact, the guy says it's WORSE to be in an far-flung country spot because being isolated makes you easier pickings for gangs who scope you out, then pick you off.

And if you want to give a Christmas gift that people will remember (and not return to the store) give 'em a 20-kilo sack of rice, or a flat of canned tomatoes, or a dozen tins of tuna. Tell 'em "This is for your survival stash in case there's a hiccup in the food distribution system." Nothing says "I love you" like a gift that says "I don't want you to starve when TSHTF."

The only question is, can you deal with the stinkeye looks you're gonna get when you do this?

All firearms in the United Kingdom must be licensed on either a firearm certificate (FAC) or a shotgun certificate.

Homicide by Gun

US: 3.98 per 100,000
UK: 0.15 per 100,000

That said, I've gotta believe knives and murders by knife are 100 times higher here than in the US

When they took away the guns, the bad guys got knives.

It's soooo 1300's!

Bring all US troops home from overseas. Put combat brigades on the Mexican border and introduce martial law for all areas within five miles of it (yes, that would include the southern portions of San Diego). Tell the Canadians we're making it official, and start rolling tanks into Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Montreal. Tell the Cubans we're coming, and if they so much as sneeze, we will napalm the whole f@*kin' island and pave it over. We can feed ourselves. We sit on enough shale oil and natural gas that, combined with oil from Canada and Mexico, we're alright. Plant sawgrass everywhere that isn't being used for food crops and start producing cellulosic ethanol as biofuel. Raise all the drawbridges, arm to the teeth, and stomp the living crap out of anyone who screws with us. Revive the CCC and the WPA, draft the unemployed and put them to work doing anything, anything to keep people busy. Let the worthless financial system crash and establish a United States National Bank from the ruins. We'll survive while the rest of the world burns.

10. Reducing a fever without drugs... Remove all clothing, sponge off the body in tepid water with a bit of rubbing alcohol in it, lay the sick one on a wet sheet, submerge in a tepid bath, give lots of water, have them suck on ice chips, open the windows, throw off the covers...like that. If all else fails, there is white willow bark tea which has the active ingredient found in asprin...but actually you can take 350 mg of tylenol every 4 hours and two hours after the tylenol begin taking two asprin everu 4 hours. Don't take more than 3 grams or 3000 mg of tylenol in a day and follow all the ususal over the counter reccomendations about other drugs, pregnancy etc. Of course, if you don't maybe you need to be culled.

Try returning to humanity - or are you incapable?

Compassion and vision are two things we are sorely short of.

Humanity will destroy itself with people like you.

Read Guberville Smack's post again and again until you understand what it means.

Real men are peaceful, compassionate and generous.

Hardly any of the posters here are even close to being real men or women for that matter. For sure there are others posting here with the same moral grit as Guberville Smack's granddaddy but few.

The saying "Get a life" couldn't suit more here.

The only way to "get a life" is to save a life, that of your fellow woman/man/child.

Practice sharing, point your moral compass towards a guiding star. It does not matter how much you accumulate before you die, it only matters that your life was in some small part dedicated to making life better for the collective whole in this world. It does not matter if you have succeeded as a singular person. The whole mass of humankind should employ itself with this one singular task until such time as we have all be able to transcend this useless quest for material comfort and wealth.

Of course, if you don't maybe you need to be culled.....

I am thinking culling is worse than winnowing.

I will follow your instructions to the letter Brujo.

LIBVET---I've got $5 that says we are going to be in a greater depression than last, and we'll know it in 2009.

Sorry, need the other $95 for seeds.

I have enjoyed everyone's posts, I haven't looked @ the Argentine guys experience yet. I have looked at Argentina, mostly Buenos Aries from google earth and the place looks like one huge dreary and plain city only built that way to accommodate the huge and growing population.

Back here in the USA, I think most people have an naive idea of what collapse would be. The law of the jungle dictates that only the cleaver, cunning and brutal survive. The garden is a good idea if you want to live on tomatoes and cucumbers, etc. You may want to put a large electrified fence around it, if you have electricity, because you will have many new friends coming by.

Even if you have a bug-out location, marshall law could very well keep you from that destination. If you think about the first few days of the collapse, if it happened suddenly, it would be wise, in my estimation to hunker-down with a few days or weeks of food, water and other basics. After the riots and mass violence and initial kill-off, you could possibly scavage after that for much of what you'd need, then start the garden.

If it's a slow burn collapse, then the far northern or mountains may be the best thing. There are so many unknowns and knowns we don't known and unknown knowns and even known unknows, uh, whom really knows for sure? It may be a good time to join the government extermination squads, if you want to survive that badly.

I can only store so much food ,there just isn't enough space . I might have a months worth ,mostly can
food .

I don't know what people will do if they are hungry ,or what I would do actually because I have never been in that spot in my entire life . I guess I feel I might be to old . Think about people who are on medication who might not be able to get it .

I can't help but think that if life was functioning before the crash that the Governments could set up some sort of artificial
operations until a system could be developed ,rather than a Mad Max situation .

Have a bit of cooking oil, flour and sugar under your bed, that is what saved many apartment dwellers during the siege of Sarajevo. Remember that? 4.5 years while the world just let them suffer. A particularly fun target for the Serbs was shooting up the marternity hospital. Very similar to what the Zionist wretches are doing to the Palastinians.
"People oppress others to the degree that they themselves have been oppressed." I can't remember who said that. But one thing for sure.... There is gonna be a whole lota blowback.

"Bring all US troops home from overseas.

Well thanks, Dubya. I'm just an old-fashioned isolationist. The best foreign policy advice ever came from George Washington. Globalization is itself a Ponzi scheme. So are military alliances like NATO. Fine in an emergency, but I don't want to spend money defending Europe when they can do it themselves. The depression we're now experiencing is like the fetid corruption erupting from a lanced boil. Clean and sterilize, my friends. What I wish for, and I know this is just a pipe dream, is a Cincinnatus. A temporary dictator as lucky as Augustus and as good as Trajan. Wall Street has shown itself to be beyond redemption. Line them up and start shooting, then they'll see the light. Execute a few down in DC too. People like Blagoyevitch are not the exception in politics, he's just saying what many think. We have absolutely no business holding ourselves up as any kind of example for anyone or anything until we have restored order in our own house. That will take a generation, the damage is that great and goes that deep. America needs to be on the backbenches for awhile. Only a Roman Emperor, a good one, could solve this mess with any speed. Obama is not that man. He still believes in the system that brought us here. McCain was no better, a careerist like Bob Dole who thought being elected president was just a step up in GS level.
