Money bombs, vision and leadership. Here it comes America, ready or not.

Whether you support the guy or not, you have to admit it'll be different having a president again. You know, since we haven't had one in a long time.

I'm almost okay with the fact that we elected a "well spoken" unaccomplished puppet like Obama because you could but a t-shirt with his face on it at Urban Outfitters....... buuuuuuuuuut the people he continues to surround himself with are Washington insiders and his veep is a blowhardy dope who should have been kept in a basement during the campaign.

How are we going to see change under such an administration? It's amazing to me Keith that someone like yourself who is so pragmatic could be romanced so easily by a "community organizer." That's not a party line either because I'm not a Republican and I hate Bush like I hate having my toenails pulled off one at a time by Roccman picking my bones for food in '09.

I don't know where any of that was going, but hey, it was your question, not mine.

PS...If someone needs a farm hand, I'm available. I'm about 6'1", 195 lbs, fit, run half marathons and can make it up to the top of Echo Mountain in about 30 minutes.

I disagree with him on many policy fronts, but I am happy to see America with an intelligent, moral leader again.

After The Worst President of All Time, a feeble, dumb and intellectually stunted moron who caused more damage to the US at home and abroad than any person ever, Obama is a welcome change.

America became a feared, immoral quasi-terrorist organization under Bush/Cheney. America was hated and disrespected around the world, while at home, it all fell apart.

Obama now has a massive, disgusting, stinking mess on his hands.

But one person can make a difference. Just look what Reagan was able to accomplish. America is a confidence game, but we've lost our confidence, we've lost our mojo, and we've lost our good reputation.

Watch Obama get it back. And unless you want the world to fall apart, you might want to give the guy a chance.

this dude is toast. what an idiot...

"we'll replace lightbulbs, that'll put people to work."

who? the lightbulb installers????

"we'll hook up the libraries to the internet, this will create jobs."

i don't know about you, but i have never been to a library that wasn't hooked to the net. and we are still where we are.

"every kid in america should be on the net."

what for? to download pornos? i don't know about you, but i am allowing my children less access to the net all the time.

what a flippin tool shed this guy is. didn't he go to an ivy league school? guess they don't teach common sense in ivy league schools. in 4 years, we will be tits up, in default and an out of work nation. and he will go down as the worst president ever.

you should have wrote in ron pauls name, i did. anyone who didn't will only have themselves to blame. say it with me, "we only have to wait four years, the next time i will do the right thing when i vote."

idiots!

Yes, any idiot knows that conservation is the first thing a president should encourage

Bush and Cheney wanted to sell oil. Non-corrupt leaders would like to get energy costs down.

I feel sorry for Republicans. "Drill Baby Drill" and mocking the idea of conserving is a loser position, and they'll never see higher office again, being the ignorant party.

Anonymous said...

Keith, is that all you could show to convince us that Obama is THE MAN? Pretty pathetic, really!

If you remember, I was one of the posters who felt electing Obama was the right thing to do. I just think the plan he's announcing, especially energy conservation by insulating schools and buildings (already tried, with meager results), building roads and bridges, will create millions of jobs for the same people who've lost theirs in the construction business. I think illegal immigrants will have a field day under Obama’s plan. (Mind you, I have nothing against illegals, but I just wanted to highlight a fact that must be reckoned with).

Yes, he talked about technolgy and competitiveness, but that stuff is very old. America's problems aren't going to be cured by creating minimum-wage jobs. America's ills must be addressed both domestically and globally, for America’s problems are mostly of a global dimension (foreign debt, trade, outsourcing, wars and US militarism, human rights and Geneva Conventions, America’s brand overseas, drug trafficking, illegal immigration, environmental issues, America’s support for land occupation by force and its friendly approach to despotic regimes, etc)

So far, Obama's rhetoric for change sounds almost naïve, as it has no real vision. What I see here is an Obama still behaving like a Senator whose state needs some help--not as the President of a superpower whose country is at the brink of an abyss.

I still think Obama has a historic opportunity to stand up and be counted among the greatest leaders of change in American history, especially now that Americans are begging for change. Obama must come up with much, much bolder decisions. He must shake up the establishment and show some courage by making tough choices, breaking away from the discredited, outdated policies of the past.

I am afraid, though, that if he continues on this sheepish course, he'll lose the mandate and the momentum he gained from the electorate, and he'll be just another sorry figure, with no lasting impression on Americans life.

Speaking as a very old school grandmother (grandparents born in 1880's, parents 8 and 10 in 1929), I do many little things ala lightbulbs and believe it or not, if frees up surprising sums of money for things which can't be economized on. Don't mock the small stuff. Grandparents have been doing stuff like that for a long time. It runs in my family and my brother and I both married frugal people. Let me give you an example:

My sis in law and I both make our own soap, laundry soap sometimes, cut up towels for clean ups instead of buying paper this and paper that. Figure a roll of paper towel per day in a family with children. We don't buy fabric softeners because home made soap actually does a great job of softening laundry. We take good care of shoes and work to get stains out of clothes, again home made soap works wonders. She has about 6 large totes of childrens clothing sized and sexed for anyone in family who needs clothing. We both sewed clothes for our children at different times.
How about an outfit for $1.67 for a 3 year old (2006), not long ago. We can, freeze, dehydrate, pick wild blackberries (Oregon is over run with them), make jam, smoke salmon. If you are a guy, you probably hold such small economies in disdain. But neither of us has credit card debt. I don't need to go to the mall and buy cinnabons for $2 a roll. I can make rolls for two families (about 16 each) for about $3.25 and they are very close. I don't buy at Starbucks, but I make a good pot of coffee. I don't buy those single microwave popcorn envelopes and expose my lungs to killer mist. But for twice the cost of one envelope I can have popcorn once a week for a year. I always look for butter on sale and mix it half and half with a little oil for my own hot popcorn. You can even do it on the stove top with a pot and a tablespoon of oil if you know what you are doing. I look for small savings. One time saving $2.50 is a gallon of milk on sale..That's how this country was built for the most part, not by huge leveraging and neck high debt. You better hope you can think of some small ways to save, because that will pay for you dinner. You should be glad to have a president who knows the small economies of daily life. The Bushes didn't even know how to scan groceries.

I'm most curious about how long Obama will conceal his birth certificate. The media is starting to do stories, now that the lawsuits are piled so high and the obstructionism by Obama stinks so bad.

If he really isn't qualified, will anyone do the right thing?

Oh well, here's to President Biden! That's Change I can Believe in!

Seriously though, maybe one day Americans will appreciate frugality, conservation and living within their means again.

Every idea seems to have a down side:

CFL Bulbs Have One Hitch: Toxic Mercury
by Elizabeth Shogren

All Things Considered, February 15, 2007
The Environmental Protection Agency and some large business, including Wal-Mart, are aggressively promoting the sale of compact fluorescent light bulbs as a way to save energy and fight global warming. They want Americans to buy many millions of them over the coming years.

But the bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, a neurotoxin, and the companies and federal government haven't come up with effective ways to get Americans to recycle them.

"The problem with the bulbs is that they'll break before they get to the landfill. They'll break in containers, or they'll break in a dumpster or they'll break in the trucks. Workers may be exposed to very high levels of mercury when that happens," says John Skinner, executive director of the Solid Waste Association of North America, the trade group for the people who handle trash and recycling.

Skinner says when bulbs break near homes, they can contaminate the soil.

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin, and it's especially dangerous for children and fetuses. Most exposure to mercury comes from eating fish contaminated with mercury.

Some states, cities and counties have outlawed putting CFL bulbs in the trash, but in most states the practice is legal.

Very well spoken address to the US people.

In layman's speak:

- energy reduction staring with the easy things
- make-work programs that will renew aging infrastructure (at a reasonable labor cost) while giving jobs to the umemployed
- a renewed focus on education for a country that hasn't focused on it for some time

With his practical solutions and clear-focused ideas, Obama shows a belief and commitment in the future of this country that seems lacking in the old-power structure of the current government. It's as if the old guard of over-sixty-somethings has gotten tired and just given up on America's future, preferring to suck out what few resources are left in a quick easy money grab before hunkering down for a long winter nap. Thank God our new President is wide awake and ready to roll.

I love these whether you agree or not you have to admit... posts, Keith, because you obviously know they never will, regardless of the evidence.

I live in Hawaii and not only is Obama not trying to hide anything, but the head of the Health Department has verified the authenticity of the birth certificate. The evidence exists and the ridiculous lawsuits will go nowhere. The truth is the truth whether they believe it or not.

Some people are just so proud of their stupidity it hurts my head to think about it. These are the same ignorant folks who voted in the idiots who created this mess we're in, and would do it again and again for all the wrong reasons, if the rest of us hadn't finally decided we were sick and tired of it and ready for a change.

I just want to shake them and scream "Wake up! You've been played!" but it's a unique kind of delusional ignorance that can't be shaken or reasoned away. Since they can't be helped, I also wish they would simply go away.

I don't agree with Obama 100% either, but there's no one on earth I agree with about everything, so that isn't a requirement. He's honest, has integrity, and he cares about doing the right thing for the American people for no other reason than because it's the right thing to do. After 8 years of being lied to, cheated, stolen from, and having my intelligence insulted, a less than perfect but intelligent and ethical president is someone I can stand behind, whether I agree with everything he says and does or not.

Watching the MSM cover Obama's back every step of this election, minimizing his mistakes while magnifying McCains daily, at volume 10. This drove this moderate Republican towards the right.

And at the right, I was listening to Rush Limbaugh shortly after the election (stay with me here, there's a point) and he had an interesting pontification.

He said, basically "The left is driven by rage, and now there's no place for their rage to go. And this much rage can't just go away, it has to go somewhere".

And I've watched, and he has a point. The rage is still there, like on the Daily Kos headline today on sootandashes:

McCain lawyer: Most ‘horrific’ McCain stories never ran.

The rage is still there, incredibly. Probably Kos won't be happy until Dem is fist fighting Rep in the streets. Whatever. Bring it on. It won't look good for the Obama years though.

keith, Clinton gave us 20% increases each year in our stocks and health care costs and college costs became unaffordable to many. Obama talks big but something has to give. One of those things, for example, is that the literacy rate of college students has been dropping for the past 10 years as paper wealth went through the roof. so we'll see if cosmetic stuff really makes a deep difference or not. personally, I think obama will throw a party simply to distract people from what he's doing behind the scenes. In Jimmy Carter's case, Chrysler renegotiated labor contracts; Bill Clinton did NAFTA. I'm sure Obama has something up his sleeve as well.

Anonymous said...

Had to laugh at the complete absurdity of it all.

A detached lame-duck pontificates about how he was actually a pretty good president(as if), while actually heaving a huge sigh of relief at handing his absolute Disaster to the opposition party.

Meanwhile, an anguished nation pines for relief so keenly that a guy a month away from being sworn in now addresses us.

Hell no I won't give this new guy a chance.

After '04, we deserve every little bit of the enormous ass-kicking coming our way.

God, your never ending appreciation of the Messiah is so sickening. I voted for Obama, but why on earth do people believe that he will save the day? By what, printing up more money and making the dollar worth less and less and thus having the U.S. Dollar lose it's reserve currency status? We are in big trouble. We need to take this tough medicine and allow prices to correct. Once that happens, then when Americans have learned that they better save for their future, then we will have a good foundation for a stronger economy.

The most fun of these exit interviews with the president is going to be watching the news anchors try to delicately assess whether this president realize just how bad he has f***ed this thing up [on screen: Gibson asking Bush various questions, trying to gauge what he thinks the American people think about his presidency. Gibson also asks Bush if there was an 'uh-oh' moment]. An 'uh-oh' moment? Why do we have to talk to this jackass like he's four? When did foolhardy war and economic collapse become 'uh-oh' moments? Mr. President, I have a question. Did you make a boom boom in the Middle East? Look at me, I'm asking you a question!" --Jon Stewart

Instead he parrots this lightweight fluff anyone with an ounce of common sense knows.

Hi everyone!

People who are determined to keep us divided start these rumors about Barack’s birth certificate to manipulate us into thinking he is not an American citizen.

The fact is Barack Obama was born in the state of Hawaii in 1961, a native citizen of the United States of America.

Learn the facts and see the birth certificate for yourself:

Together we can make sure these negative and divisive attacks don't affect this election.

Thanks for your help.

Friend --

Barack Obama was born in the state of Hawaii in 1961, a native citizen of the United States of America.

Smears claiming Barack Obama doesn’t have a birth certificate aren’t really about a piece of paper, though -- they're about manipulating you into thinking Barack is different.

See Barack Obama's birth certificate for yourself and help push back with the truth:

The birth certificate thing seems pretty weak; however, it doesn't seem to be embossed with the seal of Hawaii.

Shouldn't all original US state birth certificates be embossed with the seal. I thought that was part of the purpose of the background weave pattern on certificates, to help distinguish the embossed seal.

There is nothing that instills trust or confidence in me when he talks. He needs some grey hair and grit in his voice and about 15 years more experience.

He reminds me of someone whom is just begging for a beating in a tough neighborhood or something like that and the world is getting to be an over-populated anger infested zit about to pop. Too much acting and talking same-'ole mass consumption, common denominator stuff.

Yes, we need the bridges painted and a few new nuts and bolts here and there, but it would be nice if he would just stop the un-godly spending and put a fiscal responsibility team together. Theres something about career politicians that just permeates thru everything as they plan our futures with spending ideas with such disdain for detail and frugality.

I guess if I was a 20 something, he'd appear as the great thing he's PR'd to be. I really would like to see things improve, but I just see fluff and BS. I'm too old I guess, maybe if BO had been in a few trenches or even done some extensive diplomat or even economic committee work before becoming the president, I'd also have that warm fuzzy glow too, that all the kiddies have.

Thanks for posting the link to that 'birth certificate,' but please be aware that it is a Certification of Live Birth(COLB), otherwise known as a computer print out. In the 1960s, Hawaii allowed registration of foreign birth certificates, which is what his COLB would be based off of.

This is an example of a real Hawaii 1963 Birth Certificate. There were basically the same in 1961.
http://snarkybytes.com/?p=521

The COLB Obama has provided is not sufficient to get a drivers license, or a passport.

Same ol' shit, different bag. What kind of "vision" pours more money into failing public schools when it's patently obvious that approach hasn't worked after 30 years and trillions of dollars? What kind of vision prioritizes money for road improvements when the obvious thing to do at this point is improve our railroad and mass transit systems? Fluorescent light bulbs aren't going to plow a field anytime soon, but hey it's a nice sentiment with green "vision".

The earlier comment about the left still harboring pent-up rage is dead on. Now that the election is over Obama seems intent on stiffing the far left and Latinos and these two groups will eventually turn on him. With Latinos the anger is just starting, but the kos types are boiling over right now. That rage has to be released and a visionary leader would have found a constructive way to vent that anger.

Sorry, but Mr. Vision's big plan sounds more like a PTA newsletter to me. After Hillary and Bill get through with him in a couple of years, he'll wish he had stayed at Harvard.

While I agree with BO on many things, putting money in schools is not the solution. You have to put money in teachers.

Make teaching a very well paid job, BUT filter out the bad teachers.

By the way, if you've ever heard any Chavez speech, it sounds very much like that... "We'll modernize all schools. One laptop for every child. Internet for farmers. etc etc"

If you've actually heard one, it sends chills down your spine

I'm just disappointed that he's quit his pointed finger pointing and is now doing the "curled finger pointing" that many years ago some research said was "acceptable".

The whole world aims to average. Obama was at his best when he unfurled that finger to make a point.

I know it's a rule, but, personally, does it matter if he was born in the US?

He won the election. More people voted for him than anyone else. So he wins. That's how democracy works.

Trying to overturn the results of a fair and free election on the basis of some technicality (real or not) is anti-democratic.

And undermining the authority or legitimacy of a newly elected president, before he has had a chance to do anything, is absolutely horrible for the country at the worst possible time.

it's not the "green" message i have a problem with. we need to take care of this planet for future generations. i have 2 children and do all i can already to help preserve it.

ITS THE FACT WE JUST HAD THE WORST ONE MONTH JOB LOSS NUMBERS IN 30 YEARS AND HE WANTS TO TALK LIGHTBULBS!

it's the timing. going green is the right thing, the smart thing to do. most people already know this, we see it every day, everywhere we go. at the schools, signs on the side of the road, companies where "green" like its a badge of honor, on tv, at the stores, green products, green everything.

he is talking about something most people know and understand at a time when this country needs leadership not a public service announcement.

and again, how is changing lightbulbs and hooking up all libraries and schools to the internet going to create jobs? i must have missed something because he clearly said it would but didn't say how?

look, in 4 years when the country is tits up and we have 50 mill out of work tell me how the lightbulbs and internet made a difference.

you want to know the really scary thing here? first, people are arguing over the authenticity of his birth certificate when we are staring at the second great depression???? idiots(both those who started the argument and those who responded). and second, for about a year heading up to the election i spoke to many people, friends/relitives/co-workers, about the candidates. most people i spoke to agreed that ron paul was a) much smarter than the other 2 toolsheds(though thats not saying much), b) much more qualified for the job and to handle the current situation and c) agreed with most if not all of what ron paul was saying.

but they still were going to vote mccain or obama. and when i asked why, "because if i vote for ron paul i will be taking away a vote from mccain/obama and the other guy will win."

we are totally screwed and still haven't learned! i guess bill maher said it best, "if the country were smarter, you'd be leading in the polls."

and even more "words of wisdom" from captain lightbulb!

Obama endorsed the negations, saying “the auto industry is the backbone of American manufacturing.”

“It is a huge employer across many states,” he said. “I don’t think it’s an option to allow it simply to collapse.”

At the same time, he said, “they do not have a sustainable business model right now,” insisting that the industry needed an overhaul involving “labor, management, shareholders, investors.”

“If the want to survive, then they better start building a fuel-efficient car,” Obama said, and accept that the future will never again be as “rosy as they project.”

he says they have to go green to survive. he never admits or addresses the real problem with the big 3, the UAW! a dumocrat/socialist creation.

GM knew years ago green was the right way to go. but they are so bent over a barrell by the UAW, they can't operate. they are currently paying more to retirees than they are to current workers. the only hope they had was more trucks/suv's because its the only product with enough profit margin to feed the vampire that is the UAW. go green is easy to say. but thing is, the profit margin in smaller, economy, hybrid, compact cars is not near what it is for trucks and suv's.

not giving the big 3 an excuse, just perspective. i think they should have given the UAW the bird 10-15 years ago and told them all to go to hell. screw the retirees, screw the members, screw em all because we have no choice. we are not a charity and we cannot operate as one. they didn't and now they will pay for it(actually not because capt lightbulb's gonna write a check. idiot!).

do the math, common sense. again, captain lightbulb has none and we are doomed. but in four more years we can all do the right thing. hopefully we haven't killed eachother off and gone cannibal by then.

RE: "did he just say he was going to make sure schools and libraries are connected to the internet?"

libraries are connected but you have to pay tuition dollars to access 'em.

if O puts some libraries in the public domain, and internet accessible, it will be a great thing for the country.

as it is now, you need to pay country club fees to use publicly funded resources.

I would look at these announcements as a bridging plan, not the final solution. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I think that these projects are the small and easy stuff. Why not start with the easy stuff? The US needs government make-work projects to transition back to a country with a manufacturing base. Perhaps these initiatives are only to buy time until that can be accomplished. Once the US dollar corrects, America may again be able to become a net producer of goods rather than a consumer of all things Chinese.

Humans tend to be very focused on the present. Leadership involves looking at the big picture and picturing where the country should be 20+ years out. Reducing carbon emissions from coal fired plants is likely one of those plans. Gains in efficiency are the easiest way to start conserving.

Anonymous said...

"I would look at these announcements as a bridging plan, not the final solution. Rome wasn't built in a day."

Yeah, but in the end Rome was pillaged by the Visigoths in three days.

I have to love the "shovel-ready" B.S that is coming out of the bomabots. Anyone who has dealt with federal government contracts knows this is utter nonsense outside of some special access or black programs. Funding anything major takes a minimum of 6-12 months, and often the money from Uncle Sam doesn't start flowing for months after the contract starts. Private companies with no cash or credit lines are going to be hard-pressed to hire people when they can't pay them for the work.

Sorry to burst any bubbles here, but that is how it works in the real world of government bureaucracy and contracting. Now President Obama could declare a state of emergency (something BTW the kos crowd swore we'd see under W) and grant himself war powers so he could rule by edict. That move would almost give him almost as much authority as Congress gave to Paulson and Bernake -- LOL!
