My point is this - it's time for straight people to stand up for the civil rights of gay people.
Not doing so is shameful.
And it not only ignores the UN's declaration of civil rights (happy 60th yesterday), it ignores our own constitution.
And the people who are against legal civil unions for gays know it. They have no legal grounds to stand on. Or moral grounds.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
And the point about other countries being much worse is a sad point. Defend your own bad behavior because someone else is worse? Again, shameful. And you know it.
Only individuals have rights under the U.S. Constitution. Groups have always been seeking special attention in the courts and it's ultimately a dumb move to grant their wishes.
Gay individuals have the same rights under law as any citizen, but I'll be damned if they expect me to support special or protected status because of what they choose to do with their genitals. The issue of gay marriage is a straw man argument, and their real goal IMO is elimination of any concepts of degeneracy.

Is all societal behavior healthy for a civilization long-term? Families? Single-parent families? Gay Parent families? Polygamous families?
What about war? All other human endeavor pales in comparison to armed conflict. Is it a form of evolutionary punctuated equilibrium when one society destroys another?

To change the definition of marriage may well harm modern culture. It will clearly change the concept of "family". Will it not?
While people with certain genetic make-ups may be proven to have gay tendencies, not all gay people have that DNA make-up. It is also a behavior that can be "chosen". The same is not true of being male or female; black or white; Hispanic or Asian; For that reason alone, many heterosexuals are concerned that legalization of gay marriage would in fact encourage that behavior in children who only have developmental sexual identity issues - and not any specific genetic tendency toward not reproducing.
If it's true that most gay people in the past married heterosexually due to societal pressures, it may well be that the wide spread acceptance of gay marriage would, in fact, rapidly reduce the population of gays on earth. Due to lack of reproduction.
In my opinion, the future holds much deeper philisophical pitfalls for the human race. Wait until babies start to be designed with certain traits in mind. Gattaca anyone?
The attached article references the UDHR. In summary, there are have been recent United Nations resolutions which will try to censor free speech on the internet. This international law will apply to anyone in any country. Scary reading.

are they really being denied rights? I have heard mentioned many times that many of the same rights (if not all) of married couples can be had via other legal means. is that true or not? it may take a little more effort but if it is true then they aren't really being denied "rights". they are just being force to put in more effort, which still isn't fair.
And any way, they are fighting for the wrong thing. they will never win fighting for the right to marry because marry is a religious thing. they ought to radically change the rules of the game because they aren't winning. they need to work to get government out of supporting a religious ceremony.
If the government issued civil union contracts then their position would be much stronger.

You'd like Oz for how it deals with gays. "Marriage" per se is not legal, although the Australian Capital Territory (a chunk of land around Canberra which has similar legal status to Washington, D.C.) tried it but was overruled by John Howard. But gays are steadily gaining equal legal rights to straights, including the right to shared government benefits.
People here generally don't give a shit who's gay. They find it amusing, like any personal quirk, but not threatening. Even the sticky-carpet pub around the corner from my house, a place where bogans (Aussie slang for "greasers") listen to loud 'n' dirty rock in the front room, has a gay disco upstairs. And there's no fights between the two clienteles. (It tends to be bogan vs. bogan, because a drunk Aussie is just as you'd expect...)

Today's cause du jour though on the equal rights front is gay rights. It was women's rights before, and rights for minorities, and rights for handicapped (oops, americans with disabilities). Tomorrow it will be something else.
Bottom line - you cannot legally infringe on the equal rights of another person for too long. Eventually the law catches up to discriminators.
And what's especially gross about this current gay rights debate is it's about a majority seeking to discriminate against a class based on their religious beliefs.
230 years later, we're still fighting that stupid battle.
What's especially funny is that straight people get nervous standing up for gay rights otherwise we get called gay or gay sympathizers.
I seriously could care less what two gay people do inside their homes. I could care less. Just like I could care less what black people do or women do or paraplegics do.
What I care about is when the country, in my name, legally discriminates against my fellow man. Or woman.
It's wrong, it's always been wrong, and it will always be wrong. And 100 years from now, this little battle will be just as sad and just as disgusting as the battle over the rights of blacks to marry whites, or the rights of women to vote.
This will be settled law within 10 years. Gays will have the same civil union rights as straights. And churches will be able to marry whoever the f*ck they want.

Sure, everyone is born equal, but as we progress through life some become more equal than others.
And, as you get older and find that you do not have certain connections to make your self more equal that the rest of the people, then you better get your ass in gear if you want to break away from the pack.
If it all just stayed in the bedroom we'd be fine, but gay marriage isn't about the bedroom - or the benefits of civil unions (which are legal in most states). It is about elementary school. It's about what other people teach my kids when they are in second grade. It is like every part of the battle between secular progressivism and conservatism.
It is about my daughter's second grade teacher asking her to please not wish the other students a Merry Christmas. It is about that same teacher terrifying the kids about the melting polar ice caps. It is also about telling 7 year old boys, who don't like playing with girls (because they have cooties) that they may NEVER want to play with girls - even when they grow up. Sound absurd? It all happened. Oh, the enlightened Blue States!
Until we can tell the difference between genetic tendency and social encouragement, you shouldn't force a redefinition of marriage on the children.
