"We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things."

"We reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals."

"What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them – that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply."

"On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics"

"Our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions -- that time has surely passed"

"We will restore science to its rightful place"

"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."

OK, Keith. You've talked the talk but can you walk the walk?

If you believe so strongly in Chairman Obama then it's time for you to sign yourself up to serve him:

Reality of the day, not fluffy words:

The only industry growth in California last year was in government and healthcare. (aka union parasites)

Only 144,000 of California taxpayers pay more than 60% of that state taxes.

And that's supposed to be America's number 1 economy, sixth economy in the world, and the most liberal state in the nation.

Folks, get your bunker, guns, food, and water, because this is by design. Martial Law coming up in the future.

50% of this speech, once you re-read it, was a recrimination of Karl Rove and George W. Bush.

The incompetent fool must have been pretty pissed sitting there listening to it, before he slithered off in his helicopter.

Let us hope that the message to Wall Street is:

"Party's over".

Which, after we go through this ten-year period of utter, sheer, living hell, will be a good thing.

Did you see the look in Bush's eyes, just before he walked down the stairs to the swearing in?
When the crowd started boo-ing and singing 'na na na na hey hey hey GOOD BYE'.

Man, I almost felt sorry for him. That was a look of pure fear.

Then, I came to my senses and remembered how ashamed he made me over the last 8 years, and how he raped this country.

Buh bye Bush, we won't miss you for a minute.

Hello President Barack Hussein Obama

First up, I hate George W Bush and everything he stands for and I think the Republican party is a defunct party that has completely lost touch with it's roots.

However, although it may feel good to see Bush repudiated and publicly humiliated I think we are only deluding ourselves to think that all of our problems are due to the incompetence or corruption of a single individual or even a single political party.

The problems in this country and in Washington run much deeper than that. If Washington was working as it was supposed to, Bush's presidency would have ended a long time ago and we would have seen some real resistance from the Democrats.

We would be seeing some real changes in the presidency of Obama but we're not are we?

Bush is gone. So now we have to look at the true ugliness of Washington that lay beneath Bush and Co. The Federal government has become a corrupt and incompetent behemoth that caters to special interests, the lobby groups and the banks and is a threat to the very survival of America and America's heritage:

The Constitution.
Liberty.
The Rule of Law.
Free Markets.

I haven't heard Obama mention any of the above except in the most fleeting, superficial way.

Hey, I got an idea. We can all go work for Obama changing lightbulbs!

And since the California situation was already brought up...

The budget news out of Sacramento continues to worsen.

State officials braced for the possibility of delaying tax refunds to millions of Californians, along with student grants and payments to vendors, as the latest round of budget negotiations between Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic legislators collapsed.

State Controller John Chiang has said that as early as Feb. 1, his office may begin issuing promissory notes if lawmakers have not resolved the budget crisis. The state has done this only once since the Great Depression -- in 1992.

Among the first to get IOUs instead of payments would be business and individual taxpayers who are expecting refunds, local governments and recipients of grants from the California Student Aid Commission. Last year, more than 10 million taxpayers received state refunds totaling $8 billion.

OOOOOPS!

I thought this performance was the highlight of the day

The melody was familiar, like I've known it all along. And indeed, I did. It was Copland.

But it was beautiful. It was America.

As I posted in another thread, Bush doesn't give a stuff.

He had his 7 years of good times, some nice wars, some profits for his mates, pow-wows with world leaders, etc, etc.

Then the economy imploded and he didn't know what to do - can't just blow stuff up overseas to fix - to much like work. So he shut up shop a few months early and let the next guy deal with it.

Seriously, he doesn't give two hoots, what Obama says about him.

"It is time to solve the debt crisis by going into more debt. It is time to win the war on terrorism by capitulating to our enemies. It is time to restore foreign faith in America by destroying the dollar. It is time to finish the job that Hitler started and let the palestinians run the Jews into the sea. It is time to revive the tired socialist policies of FDR and grow government to unimaginable size. It is time to create inflation that cannot be stopped except by destroying the economy with 20 percent mortgage rates and massive tax hikes on business owners. It is time to let Iran have the nuclear weapons they have wanted. It for me to spend more money in six months than the Bush Family spent in the Persian Gulf and Iraq Wars combined. And most importantly, it is time that we kiss up to the socialist Europeans that will continue to hate us anyway! I would say God Bless America more resolutely, but it would be politically incorrect. Good night to you all."

"We must return Science to its rightfull place" may have been the most important line. Not because of a need to study climate or cure disease but the overwhelming need to return to reason and objectivity as the center of our thinking.

Don - thanks for the reminder - I added it to the list. I cheered when he said it.

It drive me crazy on this board that idiots don't grasp evolution or climate change. It's frankly embarrassing, and shows a complete and total failure of the American education system.

I don't think Obama can fix that in eight years, considering that the opposition's VP candidate believes humans and dinosaurs co-existed 10,000 years ago, but hey, it's a start.

I'll be doing more science posts here. Why, I don't know, but it feels right.

Ignorance is not bliss. It's embarrassing. The world laughs at America - the greatest country on earth, full of anti-science idiots.

Evolutionary theory makes predictions about life and the way it reproduces and spreads that has been proven again and again. Climate Change is a phrase that means nothing, because climate always changes. The hockey stick graph was manipulated (read Stephen McIntyre at www.climateaudit.org for the "science" that proves it) because the effort is highly political and hardly scientific. The IPCC predicted that the earth would warm over the next ten years in precise and predictable ways. It will not. Calling it Climate Change will not make the Antarctic Ice Packs shrink. They are expanding at an astounding rate, which is why all eyes are on the arctic at the moment, because is the the industry's only hope for propaganda fuel. Don't claim science as the exclusive purview of progressives. For example, GWB was right about Late Term Abortion. An 8 month, 29 day old fetus is a human being. Aborting it is killing the baby just as surely as waiting until the the baby is completely out of the mother and shooting it in the head. In the near future, when babies are regularly born after being in the womb only 4 1/2 months, the left's "scientific" claims to morality will be seen as barbaric.

I still don't know what any of what he said meant, other than just a thinly veiled slam at the previous administration.

I read that Senators Teddy Red Face Kennedy and Robert Byrd both collapsed during the luncheon today. It's a shame the whole lot of them didn't just drop dead. Maybe then we could have some real "change."

Keith, what about all the science that points to global warming being a myth?

http://www.greatglobalwarmingswindle.co.uk/

I did watch "An Inconvenient Truth" and I am a fan of Al Gore. However, I think the science of the thing is flawed and ignores the fact that climate change happens, but it is not caused by man.

Being from the desert city of Phoenix, I believe in the "urban heat swell" argument, but not that us little monkey are causing the atmosphere to change, only the air around our tiny dwellings.

WRONG Keith. Evolution and climate change are two very different topics. I will agree to evolution of ALL species, but I won't drink the climate change kool-aid. Not one sip.

You talk about science posts - here, let me be the first -

Check that website out and OPEN YOUR MIND. If you cannot see the SOCIALIST agenda behind the 'oh my god we have to save the planet', then you have some problems.

Again Keith...going from supporting Dr Ron Paul to Obama...

Guess it shall remain one of the great mysteries...

Science is great, when it comes from scientists. Unfortunately, most of the people on that dias today have liberal arts degrees. The people who make our laws barely comprehend statistics, let alone hard science. Their excellent communication skills only aid them in spreading "Lies, damned lies and statistics," as the saying goes. I do not want science to be politicized. Hasn't Al Gore's movie been banned in the UK school system?

You should talk to my 95 year old father, an MIT grad, inventor, patent holder and Professor of Thermodynamics and the Internal Combustion engine. He read the first Al Gore book and said the guy didn't understand the first thing about the internal combustion engine. One wonders: did Gore simply get poor advice or not understand what the scientists were telling him? My dad retooled a fleet of trucks in the 1950s to use alternative fuel. He might have been better in today's world, since he could not suffer the fools in the corporate world of the time. He would like to be cloned, however.

Yes, we do need more scientists, but who wants to be an engineer when you can steal..uh.. earn a fat six figure salary, while still in your twenties, on Wall Street? We need to crack down on those too smart by half thieves in the banking industry, so that some of them do something more useful with their brains than devising derivative trades.

I've never seen an IRS legbreaker come to my house.

Have you ever seen an IRS legbreaker running like a scared little child?

Just wait, there are some truly pissed off people just itching to get a knock on the door from the IRS.

You don't even know what league you're playing in.

Americans are angry, and armed to the teeth and now backed against a wall. What the hell is the IRS going to do to them?

Hunger will trump fear - You can quote me on that!

Science:

Let's keep our I on the ball when it comes to climate change. Their are people with political agendas ALWAYS including Scientist. Let's determine facts the best we can with SCIENCE. Let's determine options with REASON. Let's determine priorities with DEBATE and POLITICAL EXPRESSION. Let's make decisions with LEADERSHIP. Let's carry out our MISSION with PASSION. We must always keep an OPEN MIND so that we can correct mistakes made in our SCIENCE, REASON, DEBATE, POLITICAL EXPRESSION and LEADERSHIP.

OK climate change is debatable, but why do we need an excuse to stop wasting incredible amounts of energy?

Even if there's no climate change it is still self-destructive. If we're giving tax breaks on homes where you need a car to get to school, work and the store, then we're blowing our wealth on a lifestyle that requires more and more energy to exist. These increasing energy requirements make us increasingly vulnerable. Look at our foreign policy, resource allocation is a sonofabitch.

The US has nothing to gain by wasting energy. It has nothing to do with appeasing Al Gore and everything to do with common sense. Instead of drill, baby, drill it should be walk, baby, walk.

Climate change is the perfect example of an idealogical pseudo-debate that will always stalemate. Ditch them, get real and start solving problems.

As a person with a bs and an ms in electrical engineering I can tell you that there will be no change in the amount of US students going into engineering. The fact that American companies (minus Google) treat engineers like dog meat is the main reason no change will occur. Yes, engineers do start at a good salary, however, it usually caps and we are easily surpassed by BA students in sales, marketing, etc. As such, if an engineer wants to make a good salary 5-10 years out of school we have to switch over to management, tech sales, or go to law school and become an IP attorney. Otherwise, we will make a moderate sale but never even come close to people that may only hold a BA and choose the business route (or even worse the Wall Street route).
