Soot & Ashes Quote of the Day

O'Loofah-man values money. (And Christmas) Would he compromise money and Christmas? I think not. Everything else, like the Constitution, yes. So f@ck him.

That was a good start....and Israel has the right to defend herself, but only non-violently, that should have been added. How about butting out of Palestinian politics, dismanteling the blockades, pull down the aparthied wall, quit building more settlements, withdrawing all troops permanently, that sort of thing. The easy way to defend yourself is to stop making life miserable for your neighbor. No compromise of healthy values needed.

I beg people to read some Gandhi. The man faced hatred as strong as that between the israelis and the palestinians and he won them over through personal sacrifice.

Forget whether you believe in jesus or not, turning the other cheek to your enemy really works.

Once you cede the moral high ground you are lost utterly. But if you can love and respect those who hate you they will not hate you for long. This isn't pie in the sky - it really works and Gandhi proved it.

The Daily Show played O'Reilly's clip and slammed him on it.

Here's the clip:

Yeah Paul, but turning the other cheek approach only works with an enemy that has some respect for morality.

Turning the other cheek wouldn't have worked with the Nazis and it won't work with islamic extremists.

Plus, no one is advocating shit like that infamous picture. That was just a few rogue prison guards operating in an environment of incompetent management. Regardless of how the spinners want to portray it.

Classic, Bill. This is the essential difference between conservatives and liberals. Cons say "I'm the most important, me first, damn the cost to everyone else because I am an island".... Libs say "We are all important, let's work together for common good because we are all in this together."

Golda Meir said the same thing after Munich.

The whole Israeli-Palestinian conflict is actually quite simple:

1. If Palestine put down their arms, there would be peace.

If Israel put down their arms there would be no more Israel.

2. The Palestinians celebrate the death of innocent Israeli women and children by shouting slogans and chanting and jumping up and down.

The Israeli's are genuinely sorry when women and children are killed during their fights with the Palestinian aggressors.

3. It is obvious that too many Palestinian's hate for Israel overshadows their love for their own children.

4. The Palestinians could live side-by-side in peace if they chose to, but their hatred overshadows their common sense and their own self-preservation.

Which side would you rather be on? I will pick Israel everytime. Hate never wins. Islam is not a religion of peace, it is a religion of shame.

A profound and beautiful statement. Those who disdain or mock religious faith (Keith) should consider the context of what you said. There is probably little intersection between the Hinduism of Gandhi and the fundamental Baptism practiced by Martin Luther King. But both men understood that true human rights can only come from a source outside the world of man. Faith in a larger power is why both succeeded without violence.

I don't know very many people who mock religious faith. It is religious fanatics, who don't use the brain god gave them, who get mocked around here and elsewhere.

I agree that those who fire rockets into residential areas of isreal have little respect for morality. But they are in the minority, despite the celebrations you may see on tv.

Turning the other cheek wouldn't have worked with the Nazis and it won't work with islamic extremists.
Turning the other cheek may not have worked with the nazis but it would have worked with the german people who are just like us but were humiliated by war reparations. Nazis would have soon lost support had the german people realized the extent of nazi evil. In a real way, evil triumphed in WWII because we gave in to our own hatred and applied nazi tactics of murdering innocent civilians (ie: bombing of dresden, etc).

Plus, no one is advocating shit like that infamous picture. That was just a few rogue prison guards operating in an environment of incompetent management. Regardless of how the spinners want to portray it.

I agree with you here too, few are advocating outright torture and humiliation of prisoners. But it was the willfull indifference of our leadership that enabled this torture moreso than incompetence, in my opinion. This is why we must be ever vigilant - we have a great opportunity to win over our enemies by showing them kindness and respect and attempting to figure out why they hate us.

I'm not saying we're in the wrong but perhaps there are some things we could change about our foreign policy that would go a long way to minimizing arab animosity towards us.

I actually work at a high level prison...Full of lifers, murders, rapists...My prison is the kick out yard for the state on inmates who assault staff and other inmates.

Force on inmates works...for a while.

Then they get used to it and at that time they either adjust their tolerance or they stab or assault one of us.

I've gone 7 years without an assault in the middle of riots and fights based on verbal skills.

If Isreal thinks they can bomb their way to safety they're idiots...All they're doing is prolonging their safety risk.

I deal in real life...Too many here are book savvy but life stupid.

Semi-force works...Too much force is actually counter-productive.

Plus to all you isreal lovers have you seen the birth rates among the Pals vs. the isrealis? It's like 6:1.

Isreal better adjust or it will be swallowed up just like England is now by the Indians and Pakis or hell even the Mexicans taking over all the Southwest.

Not a racist comment just a certain truth.

You must be living on Planet Fox, Lap Dog, if you're still saying the Abu Ghraib torture was the work of "a few rogue elements." It's been proven, time after time, that humiliation and psychological torture was a deliberate policy from the White House through Guantanamo to Iraq/Afghanistan. It's not spin. realPresident Cheney proudly admits it!

Get with the program, son. You're supposed to say "Torture is good! It keeps us safe! Just like on '24'." That's the new Party line. Haven't you been reading the talking points?

For the person that stated that it is all Palestiniens' fault and Israel can do no wrong. Wake up! Anyone with an IQ equal or better than a German Shepard's realizes now that Israel is actualy the terrorist state. Killing over 500 kids for no reason with Zionist sitting on a hill and watching the death of Palestinians, who are human beings as well, living under brutal occupation paid for by our tax payers. Wake up America! Stop supporting the largest Terrorist organization with the most destruction to the world "Israel the terrorist state".

"...just a few rogue prison guards...how the spinners want to portray it..."

Edited for accuracy.

Paul,

Hamas won the election in Palestine, and they enjoy firing rockets at Israel. Hence a majority of Palestinians can be said to support attacking Israel with rockets launched at residential areas.

In the same way that Americans re-elected Bush in '04 and hence a majority of Americans can be said to support invading Iraq.

If it was just a minority then the majority should be doing something to stop them. If I started firing rockets at Canada I assure you the New York State police would try and stop me, as would the Local Police of the town I was in, as would the Federal Police (the FBI, etc), and likely as would concerned citizens.

Rockets away,
If you were firing your little tiny rockets at Canada, we will all stop you because Canada is not invading us, brutaly occupying us, killing our kids and so on... But if Canada were doing the same thing to the US that Israel is doing to the Palestiniens, then guess what we will all do then...
Got the point? Pls stop giving an excuse to the brutal Israeli occupation ! Israeli terrorism is simply not justified !

For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence, on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day.

I am asking your help in the tremendous task of informing and alerting the American people.

Rockets Away, this is an excellent point: "In the same way that Americans re-elected Bush in '04 and hence a majority of Americans can be said to support invading Iraq."

But I'm going to turn it around on you now. Respectfully.

Why did the US re-elect Bush in 04? I would argue that his re-election had a lot to do with how he handled the september 11th attacks and the iraq invasion.

Recall at the time that Bush was said to be very 'presidential'. His folksy, homespun manner was very calming and, it's almost hard to believe, looking back on it now, but the guy kinda inspired confidence. Imagine that.

The US was emotional in 03 and 04, just like the germans after WWI. We wanted revenge and retribution against someone, anyone.

We were in no mood to tolerate Saddam's shenanigans and we were only too happy to believe that Saddam had WMD. None of us really needed much evidence - hey, why else would saddam expel the un inspectors if he didn't have wmd, right?

It seems to me that palestinians supporting hamas are acting just like us.

We must break this cycle. Not to be cliche here but an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.

To the idiot rockets away....

Hear it loud and clear. If Canada stole my land and oppressed my people on the Michigan side of the border, I will launch rockets into Canada. No friggin' Michigan police are gonna hold me back. In fact, they will encourage me ....

The root cause for the conflict is the illegal usurping and occupation of Palestinian land by Israel using brute force, sadly financed and funded by the US.

To all the idiots on this forum who think Israel is the epitome of goodness.....

If the Native Americans in the USA declare their own homeland by using Russian and Chinese help to violently throw out all white Americans from the New England region and establish their own promised homeland, what will the response of the rest of the US be ?

Will they bend over and say that New England is this teeny, tiny piece of land and that it is ok for Native americans to have their homeland at the expense of violently kicking out all the others or will they declare outright war against this illegal state ?
