GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization warned on Wednesday that a global flu pandemic was imminent, raising its threat level as the swine flu virus spread and killed the first person outside of Mexico, a toddler in Texas.

"Influenza pandemics must be taken seriously precisely because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world," WHO Director General Margaret Chan told a news conference in Geneva.

"The biggest question is this: how severe will the pandemic be, especially now at the start"

Kieth,

I commented Sunday about my preperations just incase this thing gets out of hand. My family laughed at me Sunday morning when I returned home with 100lb of rice, four gallons of bleach, face masks etc. Now they ask what I forgot.

I predict by next week or so we will have fights at the local Ralphs market. If they are open. Although I hope I am wrong.

P.S (whisper) This was man made...shhhhhh

Kieth, lets play follow the money and see who made some big bets on pharma recently. I smell a pig.

U.S. Soldiers on the Mexican Border.

Anyone without proper identification, proof-of-citizenship, etc is shot dead on the spot. No questions asked, No questions answered.

Any soldier with 3 or more kills gets a night in kneepads with Barney Frank...

All US health care facilities closed to illegal undocumented aliens.

ICE to arrest and deport any illegal alien felon invader presenting themselves or illegal family members for free health care treatment, or kill them on the spot, their call.

No trial, no lawyers, no appeals.

Just Death.

Please don't forget that this is not ther first time this has happened. Swine flu has had many outbreaks.

History shows there is always a huge over-reaction to the outbreak. Yes people die. Life moves on in a shrt time and all is well.

I am not trying down play death. A family member of mine died at a young age in his mid twenties from Valley Fever. Most in Pheonix have experienced ot even if they don't know what it is. Mild flu like sysmtoms for most and some don't see symptoms at all. A select few die. People die in the flu season every year.

Slow down! We don't have a pandemic yet.

The only thing you have to worry about is some overzealous state health worker holding you down at gun point and sticking a mandatory flu vaccine in your arm.

So what's the problem? You should welcome this plague. It is simply culling the "useless eaters" out of existence - the old and infirm, and the young and weak (if children can't survive this, they should have been aborted). It's what evolution is all about.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

From another post on another site...

I think in March the white house (Obama, Dems & Co) finally figured out that they were going to be blamed for the market crashing (read they would not get re-elected) so they put their full effort in to raising the markets up. That means throwing everything they had at it and turning a blind eye to MM/IB/HF/SWF manipulation (squeezes, etc).

They know they cannot do this forever, now they need a way out (a scapegoat).

Enter man made Swine Flu

The gov't can say, hey everything was on track, we were rallying strongly, housing was was flatlining, unemployment was flatlining, etc. BUT this swine flu put a wrench in everything.

Enter market drop/crash/correction (back to reality).

Its not our (gov't, regulators, dems, repubs, banks, fed, etc) fault its the flu's fault.

Am I being too much of a conspiracy theorist or is there some validity to my thoughts?

You have to kiss the pig to get the flu, eating him won't do it, but Kosher food is usually better anyway.

Actually, stay home from church and off of airplanes and you should be fine. Oh, and probably want to avoid the mall for a while.

Watching Napolitano the other day made me want to HURL!!

"We are taking aggressive action" to fight the spread of this" she says, when they werent even doing passive testing of people POURING into our borders... I mean GEEZUSS JANET, if doing absolutely nothing with your thumb up your assss is your definition of "AGGRESSIVE" then we are in BIG trouble!!

If I were Obama, and had learned of the first cases, I would have CLOSED the freaking borders and banned all travel from and to Mexico immediately.

By the time they got around to doing anything, it was much, much too late.

For shame...Guess the big "die off" is around the corner--Mad Max here we come... I don't take too many things too seriously these days because why bother??

What a way to GO OUT.

With all the spew early on about saving energy, telecommuting etc, its funny how nothing is being said about plans to keep things going in the case of a pandemic. You are expected to "make arrangements" for your kids, and show up to work god dammit. Think what it would do to the economy! As another pointed out, I'll be wiping my nose on every door nob etc.

On a related point, the governments epi-models are shit. They simply pulled numbers out of their ass that tell them what they want to hear, like curtailing domestic travel wont impact spread. Does that make sense to you? You see whats going on here? Keep traveling. Keep working. Spend and slave you little people till we suck the last from you and you die.

Max Keiser is right. RISE UP!

I think everyone should follow what is on the government pandemic page. You should have medicine and food on hand. Probably 50% of the world will get this bug. How deadly? One percent mortality will still be a lot of people but not all that disruptive in the rich parts of the world. But what about Pakistan and Mexico?

This whole thing is fucking retarded. There is no Pandemic and it's not Captain Tripps come to life (Stephen King's the Stand if you don't get the refrence)

This is another BS story 4 the drive by media 2 cover more 10 times the confirmed Flu deaths occured in a split second of bombing in Iraq.

It's all bullshit to keep everyone in a state of fear...

Greg Swann, a Phoenix real estate agent, took a moment to marvel at the news. “What happened here will some day be a new chapter in ‘Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds,’ ” the classic survey of investing mania, he said. “We were living during the boom like there was no tomorrow. And guess what? Now it’s tomorrow.”

something seems a bit odd.

The US doesn't want to close the borders because the "horse has already left the barn". That seems like a ridiculous statement.

We really don't have that many cases yet. It may be containable at this stage.

WHO should shut down Mexico's borders. It's quite obvious that all international cases of the flu were from passengers flying out of Mexico.

Maybe they want it to spread.

By causing fear on this subject you downplay credibility on other financial tops discussed here. Dont do that.

Reporting from Houston (LA Times) -- As word spread Wednesday that the first U.S. death from the swine flu outbreak was of a Mexican toddler being treated in a Houston children's hospital, the baffling illness began bleeding over into the fevered national debate over illegal immigration....
And a Houston city councilwoman suggested that city officials were endangering the lives of local citizens by allowing foreigners to be treated in the city's hospitals.

The first "American" death was the Mexican child of Mexicans brough across the border for treatment.

Another reason to feel better about living in "Fortress Australia." It's hard enough to get to this far-flung place in the best of times. If things get worse, the "tyranny of distance" will become "the safety of isolation."

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (envision Jimmy Carter with an Aussie accent) was given the power to impose mandatory quarantine on the suspected infected, and to order border closures if need be. (Not hard to seal off a continent where there are only a dozen places with airports/shipping ports for people to enter.) Sometimes it's good to be a small fish in a big ocean.

That said, I'm still leaning toward this thing being a lot of fuss over nothing. But I'm prepared, right down to extra toilet paper. (I think I will get some extra cat food and kitty litter this weekend, though.) The way I see it, I win whether things turn out good OR bad.

Actually, I think the REAL problem, the REAL cause of this crisis, is THIS math:

This is SO overblown, it's pathetic.

Flu, kills an average of 36,000 people every year. Do we hear this every year on the airwaves, constantly? No.

The mainstream media is getting ridiculous. I'm tired of the scare tactics the govt. and the media are using to keep us upset all the time.

There is little real journalism anymore in this country. Most of them are paid dupes with an agenda.

So Malthus, what's your demographic?

As an old useless eater, who has great grandchildren, I worry, because apparently this targets 18-45 year olds, as did the flu of 1918, killing 2 times the war losses of WW 1. Most of my family is in the target population.

My use to society is what I know, and my courage, not my attitude or looks.

From Jim Willie's latest hat Trick Letter, usually about money, but included this interesting allusion:
See the May Hat Trick Letter for a series of arguments regarding the Swine Flu outbreak, which reads like a spy novel. The press & media networks cannot tell the story, since they function as crowd control, shaping public opinion, public address system, according to master directives, rather than an unbiased investigative information source benefiting from the beacon that used graced that industry. Several key facts regarding the weaponized influenza paint a picture that indicates an organized plan in progress with a clear purpose and probable motive. Distraction is certain, but motive is never known exactly. Its origins ain't random and it don't involve evolution. Participants are the usual suspects. A great public awakening might begin, but the late anger will coincide with casualties. Details for arguments are far too controversial and dangerous to provide in any forum such as this.

My comment was tongue-in-cheek. But, given much of what I read on this blog, it is something I expected SOMEONE would have the guts to say. Embrace nature. Live your creed.

Bukko,

You got too smug too fast as Australia now has suspected cases:

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,25397268-601,00.html

Now the advantage of being isolated and far flung is now a liability. Good luck getting out when the ports are blocked and your neighborhood turns into the city from "I am legend."

The key point: always be humble. Smugness usually leads to a mighty fall.

I try to take that advice myself but falter from time to time.
