Charles Barkley of all people sums up my position quite nicely

"I mean, you look at this country now, we've got all these foreclosures, we've got all these people laid off. We should be behind him 110 percent, hoping he's successful," Barkley said. "And I just thought it was unpatriotic and basically B.S. for Rush Limbaugh and that idiot Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck and all those idiots to not root for this guy."

"Neither party is anything to write home about. But the Republican Party just went right-wing whack nut job on America and screwed up the country."

- The Round Mound of Rebound and former Republican Charles Barkley, April 2009

Why should we support socialism, whether it's from Bush or Obama?

Anonymous said...

Look, I hate the whole phony fake conservative right wing media and Republican party but it makes no sense to say we should back up the president 110% because we're going through tough times. That's a ludicrous assertion. Should we all get behind Obama while he blows trillions of taxpayer dollars to corrupt bankers?

Should we roll over and support Obama like the German people rolled over and got behind the charismatic Adolf Hitler under a false sense of patriotism?

Should we roll over and support Obama just because he's smarter and more well spoken than the phenomenal failure and dangerous elitist fake cowboy twit, George W Bush?

That is the lamest of all arguments to say we need to get behind a president that has already proven himself beholden to Wall St and an extension of Bush policies.

Barkley's highlighted comment is also false because he assigns no blame to the Democrats for blindly and meekly passing all of the Bush administrations acts and failing to bring the Repugnic*nts to justice.

This is a sad story. A guy got killed for doing his job. Unfortunately, for him, his job was working in a photo radar van and someone decided to shoot him.

This is interesting on a number of levels. Make no mistake, though, an innocent guy got killed.

Hello from Greece.

I've been following this blog (and housingpanic blog) for quite some time, it has been very helpful in learning what is truly happening in the US.

I am politically a left (although the term "left" has a different meaning in Greece than in the US, and that explains why in Greece why have mobilizations, or the mini-rebellion in December, and in the US the left wasn't capable of anything like that).

However, there was a time, when things where better in USA, and since i' ve learned so much from this blog, i would like to make a small contribution to it.
This is why i made this post, because 95 years ago, an a day like today (April 20), something important happened in your country, and it is a shame most people don't know it.
And people who don' t know their own past, have no future either...

Keith,
For someone who feels so confident in your support of Obama, you sure seem defensive about it while having a very tough time coming up with a reasoned explanation. Quoting Charles Barkley?!? Are you serious?

Personally, I'm hoping for AMERICA to succeed. I frankly don't care about Obama's success either way. If I thought he had the solution, I would be his most avid supporter. Unfortunately, I don't believe that the path to long term prosperity is paved with massive government stimuli, pork spending, bailouts of the irresponsible and greedy, and an incompetent Treasury Secretary. Didn't we get enough of the above with Bush? Or is this reckless spending somehow more likely to succeed now that we have a better speechmaker in office?

If Obama is so great, why doesn't he rebuke Chris Dodd then?

Obama is a partisan hack, just like the others in the opposition.

What sucks is how the GOP will play the comment. Sir Charles is black so the wack jobs will discount it based on race loyalty. In fact, they'll probably see this as vindication for their wack job thoughts.

BTW, Barrak Obama pulled a sweet move by labeling Rush the spokesman of the party.

Thank you for the history lesson, Zexo the Greek. I had previously only associated April 20 with Adolf Hitler's birthdate, or the day that those schoolboys shot up Columbine High School (also in Colorado, the state where the Ludlow massacre took place.)

Reading that entry refreshed my memory, though. I had heard about Ludlow in the context of another strike in the same time period, where corporate bosses smashed the workers. That strike involved copper miners in far northern Michigan. It was where the phrase "You can't yell fire in a crowded theatre" came from because a company goon did exactly that at a Christmas Eve celebration for the miners' children. 73 of them got crushed to death in the stampede that followed.

As you say, Americans are quick to forget that big business will crush them to death. Usually just financially, but sometimes literally.

Well, basically Keith and Barkley, I think it's unpatriotic to support ANY leader who changes this country from capitalism to socialism. So no, I don't support Obama, never have. The man is as clueless as they come. He is not the messiah, he has no new ideas.

Capitalism lesson #1 for Obama - Capitalism is a form of gambling. You choose where you are going to put your money, in a house, in the stock in a company, in a tin can buried in your backyard. Then time and other people help to determine what happens to your money/investment. If more people want your house, they will pay you more money for it and you sell and increase your money. If your house is not viewed as attractive, for whatever reason, you may not get even the amount of money that you paid for it. You lose. Ditto with stocks (although how the company performs also has a bearing). In the case you the tin can, you just hope no one digs it up before you. In each of those cases, NO ONE guarantees that your money will increase or that you will get your original investment back. Obama doesn't understand this and that is only one of the many, many, many, many reasons that I don't like nor support Obama.

Can someone please define 'right-wing whack job' for me? I suspect we'd see many different definitions. When something's used as a pejorative, it helps to know what is actually meant.

Of course, Charles Barkley is such a gifted orator... or is that oral-getter?

And I think it's very funny how Hannity, Beck, et al are unpatriotic for not rooting for Obama. Isn't that the same criticism leveled against Pelosi, Reed, Kerry, etc. when Bush was in office?

Or is it that it's only patriotic if your 'team' dissents??

Hypocrites all.

These hateful fucks lorded it over other dissidents by saying it was treasonous to criticize, and here they are.

They're not wrong about Obama and how badly he's doing.

They are COMPLETE LIARS to imply that their party is better.

Recently repudiated, they know how busy and uninformed most people are.

They'll be back in 2012; count on it.

Ron Paul is right! said...

I really wish he was all he claimed to be. But he is showing that he is nothing but a shady salesman, a frontman, just like the rest.

You say he stood up to the UAW. You say he stood up to big banker's and their bonuses. We will see. He has TALKED tough so far, that is all. If he actually takes the nipple away from the bankers, If he actually tells the UAW to "fuck off", I will cheer and call him the GOAT(greatest of all time). But I doubt he will do that because THEY own him. Just like THEY owned the others before him.

You see, I believe this country has advanced and accomplished what it has in SPITE of the government trying to put their hands on everything. Capitalism is so awsome, so powerful, it continues to succeed in the face of those(bought and paid for government) who try to "rig the system". Just think where we would be if there were no FED? Just think where we would be if we truly had a "limited governement", like our founding fathers dreamed of? Just think!

Again, for the learning impaired, if we had TRUE capitalism functioning in this country, none of this mess would have even started. "Too big to fail" my ass. Moral hazard people, moral hazard and P/E ratios, its what its all about.

-Kill the unions, ALL of them
-Kill the FED
-Minimum 20% haircut to ALL government, all levels, all programs, including current pay and benefits.
-Abolish the IRS and establish a flat tax or consumption tax, whichever you prefer. Either will work.
-Government is responsible for infrastructure, schools, military and some socialized medical care. Thats it, everyone else gets FUCKING FIRED and has to find a real j.o.b.!

That would be a start. Would it be painful? Hell yes. Would it be a HARD crash? Hell yes. But it would make a SOLID foundation for continued, sustainable and solid growth.

wasn't the left the ones not so long ago used to say that it was one's patriotic duty to be critical and questioning of the commander in chief.

of course by "critical" they meant hoping more and more of our young men would get killed in Iraq.

A review of history clearly shows instances when legions of admirers cheered as systemic changes were instituted because prior groups made serious mistakes. In most cases those advocating a "whoa, let's slow down here" approach were often disparaged or even vilified. For anyone to support the current policies(the same insanity x3) at the same time they lambast the previos policies and policymakers is hypocritical to the nth degree.

And if you are going to support Obama for reinforcing Bush's policies, then I am thinking on this thought process that you have going, that you need to reconsider your love for Bush. Your very much in conflict with yourself Keith.

If I have to follow Obama just because he is in charge then you need to go back and take back everything you said about Bush. This goes both ways.

It seems like forever ago, but here's a top 10 reasons off the top of my head why it was a no-brainer to vote for Obama over McCainPalin:

1) McCainPalin was from the Party That Wrecked America.

2) See point #1

3) environment

4) women's rights

5) restoring habeus corpus, ending torture, ending illegal wiretapping

6) willing to converse with and negotiate with 'enemy' states

7) transportation/energy

8) view of america's role in the world (inclusive one of many, vs. arrogant everyone's daddy)

9) gay rights

10) view on climate change

You'll notice, no economic reasons on that list. I'm against what Obama and the Dems want to do with spending, with health care, with immigration, with medicaid/medicare, with social security, with taxes, with housing, I could go on.

In a two party system, there is no perfect candidate. We need four parties to at least come close, since then you'd have the appropriate segments on fiscal and social policy covered (liberal/liberal, liberal/conservative, conservative/liberal, conservative/conservative)

But in 2008, Obama was so far superior all in all to McCainPalin that it was a no-brainer.

That said, if Ron Paul had run as an independent, or Michael Bloomberg, I would have supported them.

Angry Leprechaun said...

"It seems like forever ago, but here's a top 10 reasons off the top of my head why it was a no-brainer to vote for Obama over McCainPalin"

I did not vote for McCain. Once again make a fucking case without comparisons.

Why would Paul have to run as an independent for your support? Especially since you and Barkley want me to back this jackass. On your non economic points, you would find that on most of them many conservatives agree. And get over your "ten point" arguments, especially when you have to reword half of them to create another point, or make me refer to another point, as a point.

By the way how was Frank? I have a gay cousin that is jealous of the two of you.

Angry Sarcastic Leprechaun said...

By the way, just because Obama can shake some hands does not mean your number eight here is valid. He is on the same path.

"8) view of america's role in the world (inclusive one of many, vs. arrogant everyone's daddy)"

6. Also Obama and his admin wants to open the borders.

2. His admin is full of corruption and incompetence

9. he is in bed with the incompetence and corruption of the House and Senate

5. He is leading the corruption in Washington. He is the president and is doing nothing about it.

8. His budget and spending is a joke. Escape clause! It is not his fault he is spending sooo much money. Escsape clause to the escape clause! I am not an idiot because I said so.

1. Ah yes point one. I had it here somewhere, shit go back to 7. Shit, did I leave a seven. Oh, yeah, he is the same as Carter, and that is my best argument.

Nice to see how the Hollywood celebs are desperate trying to continue the cult of celeb, in order to make money with the sheep. I guess business must be bad in Hollywood, so now celebs are all rushing to twitter, to maintain mind control over the stupid masses.

If the sheep realizes that celebs need them dumb and under control, to suck their hard-earned money, in order to live in luxury, buy $10,000 handbags, rent Caribbean islands for $50,000/night, lease their private jets (so much for carbon print), and get $3,000 massages, that house of cards collapses.

Do you understand now why celebs are rushing into twitter? They need to maintain mind control over the sheeple, influence the young retards, to be the puppeteers of dumb women who foolishly buy any overpriced crap they endorse or wear. It's a mind game, don't play into it, save your money.

NYT -- Officials Say U.S. Wiretaps Exceeded Law

April 15, 2009

WASHINGTON — The National Security Agency intercepted private e-mail messages and phone calls of Americans in recent months on a scale that went beyond the broad legal limits established by Congress last year, government officials said in recent interviews.

Several intelligence officials, as well as lawyers briefed about the matter, said the N.S.A. had been engaged in “overcollection” of domestic communications of Americans. They described the practice as significant and systemic, although one official said it was believed to have been unintentional.

It added that Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. went to the national security court to seek a renewal of the surveillance program

Go Barkley.

To Pale Ale--so you want no highways built, no schools, no unemployment, no food stamps, no low cost innoculations, no social security, no anything. All for none, and one for one. Socialism at its base is deciding it's good to have something for everyone, collecting the money via taxes, and doing it.

I remember from my childhood, kids with polio, rickets (my cousins). I remember going hungry or eating oatmeal (plain) for dinner. I never got an innoculation until I was 11 (polio). I had chicken pox, hard measles (damaged my sight, gave my brother pneumonia), whooping cough (I remember blood spurting from my nose as I vomited and not being able to breathe). You want to know why everyone from earlier years had such bony faces? That's rickets.

Food safety laws is socialism.
Anything we do as a group is socialism. You may thinking of fascism or communism, which was actually pretty fascist. But that's secret police, arrest without due process, one party elections and so on. We don't have that.

What we have is a mess. Pretty much created by the private sector
and in particular the financial sector building over the last 28 years. (Began with Reagonomics.)
In the 60's, our financial sector, anyone who gave loans, or had paper products involving interest, was 11 percent. It's now, at least recently, 41 percent. We put half our eggs in one basket(close) and the eggs were promised eggs, eggs that might be hatched. That was capitalism run amuck.

The government doesn't have money either, they just are the only ones who can crank it out. Banks can't get loans going. No money.
What you want us to all sit here and die? If everything stops, there we will be, in our own puddle of pee. Even grocers get their supplies on credit anymore.
Who knew?

Hitler was an entirely different
case. We don't have our army marching down the street, we don't have anything like the crystal night,( don't know how it's spelt in German). We don't have people being hauled off to camps. So stop exaggerating.

We have many issues which have been neglected for decades because the country wanted to party.Think bridges, schools, highways. Most civilizations which fall, go through a period of neglecting infrastructure and then can't afford repair when price of materials have become too high.
We should have been using some of those granite countertops to repair buildings.

I don't believe anyone, not Bush, not Paulson, not Obama, and certainly not the collective citizenry, wants to bail out the banks. But regardless of political offiliation, if anyone knows the whole situation as much as it can be known, the guys in power do, and it must be pretty bad...

Not only did Jack the Banker sell the family cow, he sold millions of shares in that cow, all around the world, and those buyers sold pieces of that cow.

If anyone can figure out how to let everyone take their lumps without putting us all on starvation diets, literally, I'm up for it.

1) McCainPalin was from the Party That Wrecked America.

2) See point #1

- Just wondering regarding the analysis behind the conclusory statements of points 1 and
2, 'cause there isn't one.

3) environment

- huh?

4) women's rights

- Women have more rights here than everywhere else. 1st, contrary to the myth they earn 70% of what men earn, they actually earn the same or more for the same work more often than not. See Warren Farrell. Also, men usually work more dangerous jobs that often pay more, etc.

- Ever see the divorce stats? Women earn more than men in 30% of marriages/divorces. Guess who pays what in alimony? Women pay 3%, men the balance (See IRS & Census). Nah, no institutional discrimination there.

5) restoring habeus corpus, ending torture, ending illegal wiretapping

- I agree re: habeas corpus, could care less about torture, and think the wiretapping (Patriot Act) will now be expanded against those doggone subversives who dare protest government action (ie - Tea Party attendee, etc). Don't see any active repeal of Patriot Act by the Dems..... don't hear anything at all, as a matter of fact. Something they screamed so badly about will now be an arrow in their quiver...where are the Dems who bitched about it?

6) willing to converse with and negotiate with 'enemy' states

- I agree with this.

7) transportation/energy

- Huh? All I see is the answer 'no' from the left on damn near anything regarding energy. More nuclear? No. More Coal? No. More oil? Hell no. No additional plants to do any of this. What's left? solar? Great, I'm all for it. Not very viable to provide energy for the whole country. It isn't efficient. What's left, wind? Wind is great, just don't put windmills by the Kennedys in Cape Cod & ruin their views.

8) view of america's role in the world (inclusive one of many, vs. arrogant everyone's daddy)

- Agreed. Make the UN have a new home while we are at it, being inclusive to the rest of the world to have such a benefit.

9) gay rights

- What rights don't they have under Federal law? They can vote, move freely. If you are talking about marriage, let gays marry. Who cares? Let them marry It's just a way to try in institutionalize acceptance by gov't force.

10) view on climate change

- Let's see if I have this right - In the 70's it was global cooling and man is to blame. The last dozen years or so, it's global warming. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. how does man's sam pollution supposedly cause 2 opposing results? I still haven't seen anything resembling consensus on the matter, no matter how much Al Gore says everyone agrees. How did that last Ice age end, btw? *Gasp* global warming.

Verbosity Dogood said...

That said, Obama was a clearer choice. He had a vision (which I think is horrifying).

McCain was just that old guy who wanted to be president without any vision forward or even why he wanted to be prez. McCain's idea of economics is to marry rich.

Oh, and regarding the 'party that wrecked America' you can't decouple economics from it. What's that unfunded Social Security/Medicare/Medicaid H-Bomb up to now? $57 trillion? What party's programs were they?

Talk about the elephant in the room.

blogger said...

1) McCainPalin was from the Party That Wrecked America.

I love the hyperbole on this one. Both parties are to blame in one way or another for the current economic mess. I will be the first to say I did not like McCain, but guess what? He would not have veered this country so far into socialism as the Obamster.2) See point #1
not even sure why you typed out 103) environment
I think you're confusing this with global warming/climate change fallacy. President Bush and the Republicans sponsored/passed Clear Skies. Which while it did raise caps from the Clean Air Act, it raised them to more reasonable levels to take pressure of the industry. This is also true for the Kyoto Treaty which would have crippled this country while providing no benefit (again your confusion the environment with the global warming hoax.4) women's rights

You've got to be kidding me, do you really think McCain or PALIN, A WOMAN! were against woman's rights or did not think they were important? And for that matter I don't see a woman's rights problem.5) restoring habeus corpus, ending torture, ending illegal wiretapping

Number one, Bush didn't suspend habeus corpus. Enemy combatants held outside of US jurisdiction are not given constitutional rights. There wasn't any torture as far as I know, some people may consider it torture. The last one is great, according to recent news reports the Obama NSA has stepped up surveillance to actual US citizens! Also, for those of you drones in the audience, look up Clinton and Europa. Clinton was doing this under the radar for almost his entire Presidency. In fact why don't you all go get a history lesson, this has been happening for a long time. The difference is that the wiretapping done by the Bush administration was limited in scope to communications that were to known terrorists.6) willing to converse with and negotiate with 'enemy' states

I know you're in Europe and you really don't understand this. But this is seen as weakness. See Neville Chamberlain for more information.7) transportation/energy

Again, drilling for our own oil is currently the only way for us to see energy independence. People need to take an honest look at our society and the way our transportation system is setup. The bottom line is that mass transit is not feasible. People enjoy the freedom of the automobile, and at this point in time there is not an alternate fuel for oil. Does that mean that we should not keep looking? No, but the private sector/market is the most capable system to come up with this alternative, not the government. This is not what govt. is for, and frankly it is not in the scope of their constitutional powers.8) view of america's role in the world (inclusive one of many, vs. arrogant everyone's daddy)

I think there is an argument for this to a certain extent. The issue that I have is that other countries are not willing to stand up and say, "that is wrong and we are not going to stand for it anymore." It is equally as bad to stand by when you can help out a people that are being persecuted and do nothing.9) gay rights

this is a personal belief, as marriage is a religious ceremony. Answer to this would be to permit civil unions.10) view on climate change

You really need to go do some research. The antarctic recently had a report that any shrinkage on the eastern part was made up in 1 sector of the western part's growth.

Maybe some of the Western US people could comment on the blizzards this past weekend as we are heading towards MAY?

Don't give me that climate "change" BS either. Conveniently the terminology changed when it got colder. The fact that there has been a cooling period in the last 10 years seems to escaped people as well. Or the fact that in 1975 they were talking about global cooling. Also, did you know that water vapor makes up the majority of greenhouse gases? We need to find a way to trap all this water, its killing us! Not to mention that we exhale CO2, and "man made" CO2 is a fraction of a percentage of all greenhouse gases.

Keith how can you honestly look at all the facts and come up with these inane conclusions?

Global Warming/Climate Change is a big hoax for the people in power to take more of your liberty in the name of the greater good.

Stop being a sheep.

I see two statements above, the first is an observation about the state of affairs and the second, an unbridled endorsement of Obama based upon the circumstances of the former.

Keith,

a lot of people in the states say they are socially liberal and fiscally conservative, but that is just hogwash. the two ideas are completely incompatible since being socially liberal means spending lots of money through the central government while fiscally conservative means limiting how much the central govt. can spend in favor of private consumption.

i find that people who say they are like this are those who want to curry favor with both their liberal and conservative friends so they don't have to get into arguments!

as for Barkley: i kind of like him but he totally misses what the Dems and BO have done. the Repubs have to take the blame for opening the spigot under Paulson, but BO and the congress went on a drunken money binge and totally screwed us over.

AS IF it were a contributor, rather than a parasite.

This whole panic is the stark terror setting in that the host cannot possibly support the level of leeches.

As you say, Americans are quick to forget that big business will crush them to death. Usually just financially, but sometimes literally.

Shit, 2 Bukkos. At least their both accross the ocean. We have enough commies here. Correction, socialists. Commies openly sieze and control the economy (see Stalin) socialists sieze and control it covertly (see Hitler).

Food safety laws is socialism.
Anything we do as a group is socialism. You may thinking of fascism or communism, which was actually pretty fascist. But that's secret police, arrest without due process, one party elections and so on. We don't have that.

Socialism is the lever Facists use to sieze control. See Hitler.

Keith,

For the record, what is your position on Carbon cap & trade that Obama proposes? Another tax on everybody that goes to the elite, i.e. another scam, or do you think it's a good thing?

Serious question.

Anyone who honestly believes there is any qualitative difference between the Republicans and Democrats, and that Obama has a different agenda than W, desperately needs to watch this video:

Oh boo hoo to the guy who ate oatmeal.

We were poor, too. My dad would not have taken a cent in handouts, and never did.

I dreamed of growing up and having a better life. Now, the socialists want to extort what we have honestly earned and give it to someone else.

Screw that.
