Those of you who hate science, and who will be tragically on the wrong side of history, of course won't watch this. For the other 90%, here you go.

Al Gore knew more about climate change than most others, simply because by chance he happened to take a course at college from Roger Revelle, one of the first scientists to understand what was happening with CO2 and the planet.

I know a good chunk of Americans won't listen to a word he has to say, and are put off by climate change science, simply because of stupid dem/rep left/right politics, and that's sad.

I don't like Al Gore much myself, and I hate the Dems too. I too thought he was a wooden, fake, calculating, uninspiring politician. And oh, I hate the Dems, did I mention that?

But I agree with him on this. Since agreeing with him is simply agreeing with settled science.

Man is toasting the one planet we have. And you'll die before the real sh*t hits the fan.

But rest assured, your children's children's children will hate you.

Also check out the UN report on climate change if you haven't already. But of course, those of you who think this is all a myth won't read that either.

The real truth is you're either on the side of 99%+ of scientists, or you're on the side of ignorant f*cks. You choose. For me, I'll always trust scientists before I trust Sarah Palin ignorant f*cks.

Always.

And I do find it odd that most of the climate change ignoramuses that I see are also the ones ignorant about evolution and the big bang. You'd think that religious people would not want to ruin the one planet that god gave them. Or that they'd be concerned about future generations. If there was one set of people that should be up in arms about this, it should be the religious. But because of politics gone astray, it's been the exact opposite. Until lately. I think even the GOP is starting to see the error of their ways, and is repenting now. Starting.

Hopefully most of you do understand this issue. Hopefully you're changing your behavior, and are involving yourself in this issue. Because when it comes to everything else, nothing else really matters. If we ruin our one planet, does it really matter how much money we blew on the housing crash?

Enjoy the show.

since they found huge (12 inch diameter) snakes in the amazon and snakes could only get to that size if the earth was several degrees warmer than it is now.

the deeper problem we have is population since it's destroying biodiversity. global warming has (apparently) happened before without the help of man; correlation isn't causation, as they say.

the bigger problem is that animals can climate shift since humans occupy so much space.

The atmosphere of Mars is 95% CO2. Its CO2 concentration is 17x higher than it is here. How come it's cold as hell there? I mean, it's even colder than dumbass Sarah Palin's Alaska, -63 °C (-81 °F).

Keith, where do you get the "99% of scientists" figure? Did you pull that out of your ass? Is it one of the 86% of statistics made up on the spot?

Your Lake Chad whining is just one example of LOCALIZED climate change. There's always somewhere in the world that's changing, whether it's warmer, colder, wetter, or drier.

How come you keep talking doomsday scenarios based on computer models that completely failed to explain recent climate behavior? Ever hear of "Garbage in, Garbage out?"

How come you don't mention the fact that many glaciers around the world are advancing?

How come you don't mention that 2007 had the sharpest temperature DROP on record and wiped out 100 years of warming?

How come Arctic ice is rapidly growing and back to 1970s levels?

What about the fortune that algore's made spreading hysteria? Some estimates say $100M. Follow the money? That's almost as much as The Orange One.

For the record, I'm an atheist that embraces evolution and the big bang.

Hey anonymous denier -- you forgot to mention that the atmosphere of Mars is almost non-existent. The fact that 95% of almost nothing is CO2 is irrelevant. False premise. Apples vs. oranges.

The fact that glaciers are advancing is PROOF of global warming. They're melting, which makes torrents of water run underneath them. That lubes their path like oil. It makes them slide forward, thus appearing to advance.

I go to Switzerland from time to time. I don't see nearly as many glaciers there in the summer (which is when I go, and also when you can see things better in the non-stormy air.) My banker gnome, who's in his 40s, says he's noticed the recession of the glaciers there over his lifetime.

Maybe you were the anonymous who cited some scientific article a while back supposedly proving that 2007 was the coolest year in the past decade. It's hard to tell with people who aren't even bright enough to think of a screen name.

I cut 'n' pasted that web address, and it said that 2007 was different ONLY BECAUSE THE PREVIOUS YEARS WERE AMONGST THE 10 HOTTEST RECORDED IN HUMAN HISTORY! 2007 wasn't in the Top 10, but it did not "wipe out 100 years of warming."

I could go on, but talking to people who deny science is like talking to my cat. Please don't shit in the bathtub, anonymous. Yeah, I know -- it doesn't work with the cat, either.

Bukko_in_Australia said...

Now that I'm done sputtering, on to what I really wanted to say.

I often wonder about the psychology that makes people deny the obvious. Part of what motivates the anti-science crowd is, as you said, simple partisan hatred. "If the liberals are for it, I'm against it!"

For the Christers, don't overlook the Rapture lunacy factor. They don't care if they trash the Earth because they believe Jeebus is coming back to burn all the sinners in a big pillar of fire, so might as well trash the place before the cleansing incineration.

It seems to be a Christian thing, this "Fuck the planet before the Big Guy returns." I deal with faithful Hindus and Muslims at work, and they're worried about MAN-MADE global warming. Their faiths don't deny science.

There's also the factor that if you acknowledge that man is toasting the planet, you're obliged to do something about it, or concede that you're a shitheel. Many people don't want to change their lifestyle. They don't want to admit they've been at fault. So they bury their heads in the sand. The sand that's right up their arseholes.

Finally, there's the profit motive. The big industrial players know they're killing the world. But they reckon they won't kill it during their lifetimes. And they can make lots of money, live large as the atmosphere carbonises.

They don't care if their children hate them. Who says they even love their children? What they love is money. Profits before people is what motivates them.

The gross displays of ignorance on this board amaze me from time to time. Global warming was settled science in 1990 and likely much farther back. The questions people continue to study are how much and what are the implications -- but the "debate" ended decades ago. If your readers would take time away from beer and nascar, shut off talk radio, and pick up a legitimate newspaper (assuming they don't all fold), the discourse would surely improve.

Believe what you want: the Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe, Republicans stand for freedom, and global warming is a hoax. Belief does not change reality.

am not concerned if the world is getting hotter or not but I am very interested in improving our air and water quality. This interest just happens to go hand in hand with reducing emissions that potentially cause global warming so if it helps that cause too that's fine with me. I have spent time in nations that have complete disregard for any environmental standards and it is disgusting. The cities are covered in dirt and everyone needs to wear face masks just to walk down the street. So maybe you don't believe the world is getting warmer but surely you can see emitting carbon monoxide and other chemicals into the air with reckless abandon is not wise.

Stupidest comment so far about the global warming effort:

"who the f*ck do we think we are wanting to change and influence the force of mother nature, she will take care of herself"

Global warming has occurred because humans have already influenced mother nature. Science is urging us to stop it.

Scientifically speaking, I have never heard of mother nature taking care of herself. Mother nature is nothing more than a reaction to conditions. It can be for the better or the worse.

Comments such as " coolest temperatures on record" do not disprove global warming, they are evidence of it. The erratic, unseasonable, temperature swings, both hot and cool, that are now occurring, have been caused by it.

Al Gore--a genuinely concerned, and selfless person? Huh?

keith said...

For the fools who won't take 60 minutes of their life to understand the issue, here's the UN report recap, that I hope you can read in a minute. Or two:

The key conclusions of the SPM were that:[37]

* Warming of the climate system is unequivocal.
* Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic (human) greenhouse gas concentrations.
* Anthropogenic warming and sea level rise would continue for centuries due to the timescales associated with climate processes and feedbacks, even if greenhouse gas concentrations were to be stabilized, although the likely amount of temperature and sea level rise varies greatly depending on the fossil intensity of human activity during the next century (pages 13 and 18).[34]
* The probability that this is caused by natural climatic processes alone is less than 5%.
* World temperatures could rise by between 1.1 and 6.4 °C (2.0 and 11.5 °F) during the 21st century (table 3) and that:
o Sea levels will probably rise by 18 to 59 cm (7.08 to 23.22 in) [table 3].
o There is a confidence level >90% that there will be more frequent warm spells, heat waves and heavy rainfall.
o There is a confidence level >66% that there will be an increase in droughts, tropical cyclones and extreme high tides.
* Both past and future anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions will continue to contribute to warming and sea level rise for more than a millennium.
* Global atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide have increased markedly as a result of human activities since 1750 and now far exceed pre-industrial values over the past 650,000 years

The big issue about climate change is how much is directly related to human activity compared to the proven historical record of many climate changes that have naturally occurred. Al Gore claims that humans are responsible and that the only real solution is carbon taxing and cap/trade policies that will conveniently make him more wealthy than Warren Buffet and George Soros combined. It's settled science for Al Gore's future income.

debt junkie said...

On the causes of the Ice Age. I believe a scientist would say there are many 'variables'.

The causes of ice ages remain controversial for both the large-scale ice age periods and the smaller ebb and flow of glacial–interglacial periods within an ice age. The consensus is that several factors are important: atmospheric composition (the concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane); changes in the Earth's orbit around the Sun known as Milankovitch cycles (and possibly the Sun's orbit around the galaxy); the motion of tectonic plates resulting in changes in the relative location and amount of continental and oceanic crust on the Earth's surface, which could affect wind and ocean currents; variations in solar output; the orbital dynamics of the Earth-Moon system; and the impact of relatively large meteorites, and volcanism including eruptions of supervolcanoes.

This is pretty fascinating from wikipedia.

The geological record appears to show that ice ages start when the continents are in positions which block or reduce the flow of warm water from the equator to the poles and thus allow ice sheets to form. The ice sheets increase the Earth's reflectivity and thus reduce the absorption of solar radiation. With less radiation absorbed the atmosphere cools; the cooling allows the ice sheets to grow, which further increases reflectivity in a positive feedback loop. The ice age continues until the reduction in weathering causes an increase in the greenhouse effect.

There are three known configurations of the continents which block or reduce the flow of warm water from the equator to the poles:

* A continent sits on top of a pole, as Antarctica does today.

* A polar sea is almost land-locked, as the Arctic Ocean is today.

* A supercontinent covers most of the equator, as Rodinia did during the Cryogenian period.

Science is the latest tin god. People like AlGore and Keith love to sing its praises (and it has many) when it helps them make a buck, but they ignore any science that seems to piss on their parade.

Water covers 75% of this planet. The interaction between the oceans and the sun dominates our climate. The sun is entering a period of unusual calm with few sunspots and lower levels of eruptions and flares. In the past these periods of solar calm have been associated (by scientists) with general cooling. We are seeing evidence of a cooling trend directly correlated to solar activity, but "scientists" like Gore and Keith tell us to ignore that as noise. Instead we must believe the distilled wisdom of a group of money grubbing politicians and lawyers who took a thousand-page IPCC report and "summarized" it for us. Sorry Keith, I've been to a couple of rodeos and I'm not buying this crappola.

"Hey anonymous denier -- you forgot to mention that the atmosphere of Mars is almost non-existent. The fact that 95% of almost nothing is CO2 is irrelevant. False premise. Apples vs. oranges."

Don't know how to do math, eh?

The atmosphere of mars is 95% CO2, but yes, it is much thinner. It's 1% as dense as earth's. But the earth has only 0.038% CO2. But despite being thinner, there's still 17-18x more CO2 on mars than on earth.

"The fact that glaciers are advancing is PROOF of global warming. They're melting, which makes torrents of water run underneath them."

Wow. Just wow. And you call other people ignorant. Advancing glaciers mean that the glacier is getting larger in size. A receding glacier gets smaller because it's losing water faster than it's gaining from precipitation.

Shit, even the IPCC talks about receding glaciers as evidence for global warming. But the fail to mention the glaciers that are advancing and the glaciers that have recently reversed course.

"I go to Switzerland from time to time. I don't see nearly as many glaciers there in the summer"

Iraq got snow this year. So did Las Vegas. So did Malibu, CA. So did central FL. Morroco got snow and it killed people. Snow crippled London because they didn't have any snowplows. They never needed them. It snowed on a UAE mountain for the first time in history. Brazil's summer temperatures are the coldest in 99 years. This is all in the last year.

Richard S. Courtney, a U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) expert reviewer and a U.K.-based climate and atmospheric science consultant snorted, "Rubbish! Global warming is not 'accelerating.' Global warming has stopped. There has been no statistically significant rise in [mean global temperature or MGT] since 1995 and MGT has fallen since 1998 . . . "Arctic ice advances and recedes over decades. 2007 saw a minimum in Arctic ice cover in the short period that it has been monitored using satellites. But 2008 saw the most rapid growth in Arctic ice cover in that same period and Arctic ice cover is now back to the average it has had in the period. . . . “anybody who proclaims that 'Global warming is accelerating' is a liar, a fool, or both."

"It seems to be a Christian thing, this "Fuck the planet before the Big Guy returns." I deal with faithful Hindus and Muslims at work, and they're worried about MAN-MADE global warming. Their faiths don't deny science."

I'm not a christian, but an atheist. And yes, Muslims to deny science. Hell, the nutjobs in Saudi Arabia didn't acknowledge that the Earth is round until the 1980s.

"There's also the factor that if you acknowledge that man is toasting the planet, you're obliged to do something about it"

Why would a modest warming be so bad?

"Maybe you were the anonymous who cited some scientific article a while back supposedly proving that 2007 was the coolest year in the past decade."

I'm not saying it, UK's Hadley Climate Research Unit, NASA Goddard, University of Alabama, and the Remote Sensing System of Santa Rosa are saying it. And no, it's not the coolest year in a decade, 2007 had a temperature drop that was the largest ever seen on record and wiped out 100 years of modest warming.

"I could go on, but talking to people who deny science is like talking to my cat."

I'm not the one denying the data. You are. You're denying the fact that there has been no warming in the last decade and very significant cooling in 2007 and 2008.

"I often wonder about the psychology that makes people deny the obvious."

Yeah me too. I wonder why people like you have a religious fervor regarding global warming when the data contradicts you.

That is a huge expanse. Why are we not seeing 80 degrees in Chicago in January?

Whether or not climate change is real is like trying to prove the existence of God. For every pro CC proof or paper, there is a counter-argument. There is so much political quid at stake that its impossible to get a non-biased answer. So who are you going to believe? The "scientists"? Which ones? I've read that some very notable climatoligists are breaking away from the CC crowd. Is this even true? I don't know. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to travel the world and take measurements and data myself. Yes, I should be taking more of an interest in the world around me, so if someone wants to fund an expedition, I will gladly come back with some 'proof'. So I align myself with the group of people most like me. I'm not a tree hugger, I don't wear sandals, I don't like Al Gore. I tend to get the feeling that CC is another myth. I'm taking the agnostic approach to CC, but I'm leaning toward "it's bullshit". Follow the money. The CC crowd definitely has a self-serving agenda.

Thing is, what exactly does the average person do about this? If I go buy a Prius or start riding public transit, will that make a difference? It makes about as much difference as casting a ballot in a US election. Zero. All the good I could do by acting like a self-satisfied woodland hippie would be undone ten times over by the folks in BRIC who are just getting their hands on the modern lifestyle. Why would I waste my time worrying about things that I have no control over?

BTW, I'm a PhD scientist, call me a denier or a f*cking idiot if you want, but the science of global warming is not particularly compelling. You've got a generally smart audience on this blog and you've probably noticed that a lot of your audience isn't buying what Gore is selling. There was a great comment about correlation not equaling causation, that was front and center in my head when I watched Gore's video. The comment about "garbage in, garbage out" is also spot on when it comes to modeling global climate systems.

Anyway I think the topic is certainly worth the real attention that it's getting now, and am glad there are people out there passionate about investigating the problem and taking action. But there are more pressing issues in front of most of us right now, frankly we'd be f*cking idiots if we took our eye off the global economic crisis unfolding on the time scale of single years to focus on an issue that will unfold over centuries.

Of course human activity, expecially CO2 emission from tailpipes, is the reason for global warming. Haven't you seen that the temperature is higher between the months of April and October, when people drive more and run their lawnmowers? When they drive less between November and March, the temperature is lower too. That's 100% correlation. In fact, the day time temperature is higher than night time temperature also due to people driving more in day time. On top of that, when you sleep, your body burns less calaries than when you are up and running during the day; the difference in the amount of CO2 that you produce is the reason why day time temperature is higher than night time temperature. How can you refute settled science like that?!

If you are afraid of warming period, be very very afraid of the cooling periods. Cooling is what brings about crop failures, starvation, social unrest, and wars. There is a reason why when the Swedish King Karl XIII, Napoleon and Hitler invaded Russia, they all found themselves in the middle of an extraordinarily cold winter: global cooling was what caused the economic upheaval that led to wars! The only successful invasion and conquest of Russia was undertaken by the Mongols, who were even more acclimitized to winter and specificly invaded Russia in the middle of an extraordinarily cold winter!

Read up on all the "global cooling" literatures from the 70's. The economy is already going back to the 70's. The bubble and bust cycles are very much related to the climate cycles.

Keith, have you heard that at one time most of the Earth was covered with ice? They call it the "ice age". Then, the ice melted, receded and this process shaped the face of the Earth. I guess we can say it was a global warming, or climate change on a grand scale. Nobody exactly knows why that global warming happened, but everyone agrees it was probably not caused by SUVs.

Oh and one more thing. If there is one reason to worry about the future of the Earth, it is over-population. So, if you have more than one child, or you intend to have more than one child, stop preaching to me and look into the mirror: you are personally responsible for all of our environmental problems.

In the mean time let's spend (err tax us) trillions of dollars so we can lower our standard of living, give more political power to amero-european socialists, and/ or facists because for the last 150 years or so they've been so right on a whole host of issues.

Greed is what keeps this debate raging. The doubters doubt because every solution involves us paying for it. If they truly believe why do their solutions always involve us enriching "them".

Obama wants carbon credits, who pays? We do of course. Even the poorest in our society will pay more for electricity.

With the trillion$ O is throwing at pork we could be building lots of clean green, new safe, nuclear plants to generate electricity. Then use the Natural gas that was once burned wastefully in electrical plants to fuel cars in cities. Cities already have natural gas delivery infrastructure so its easy to do. Natural gas in cars is cheap and super clean. Any car can be converted to run on natural gas.

As a side benefit we might see cheaper oil as all those cars now running on natural gas reduce demand for oil.

Why did'nt Obama put people to work doing these two things?

Money! "They" have no interest in anything that really helps us common folks or furture common folks, they only care about making money from us, right now and forever!

Cheap, clean electricity was not even brought up as they squandered trillion$ because one of those words is unacceptable to them "cheap". If they can't make stupid money from it they are not interested.

Cheap clean car fuel in our cities.....can't have the cheap part!

So us common folks should ignore anything they say, because they always have a price tag attached to their solutions. I call BS. If its so important and our planet needs it so bad then we'd be building nuke plants and natural gas cars. Period!

It does not take a genius to see this, follow the money. We just took a huge PASS on two giant reductions of green house gasses and insted chose to repair roads and build libraries.

The timing was perfect for Obama to step up and say we are going to put people to work, plus create affordable energy AND make a giant stride toward tackling global warming AND spend this stimulus money on something that benefits everyone and future generations. But NO, not one mention of it, so there is your emergency. When the government puts thier money (our taxes?)into this, then I'll be willing to put mine into it.

Keith, dealing with Climate change is futile. You are simply dealing with the symtom and not the cause. You cannot expect correction until you fix the problem causing that problem. The Problem,,,,,Too Many People. Toooooo Many Polluters. No controls on human birthing. There are approx 6.5 billion reasons why we are having adverse climate issues. All the Al Gore suggestions, every Nobel scientist's suggestions and all the talking head's suggestions are N O T going to work. Climate Change efforts are the simply the Scientific Bailout attempts to make money for the promoters of those attempts. Climate change is Big Big Big Money. The population is the P I G and Climate Change Efforts are nothing but the lipstick.

Boy, what a deja-vu. To the true believing fundamentalist (of any religion) the perfect truth of their holy writ is soooo obvious that they view people as coming in only two flavors: those who believe and those who have not read the scriptures.

Another characteristic of the fundamentalist believer is that EVERYTHING is proof of their beliefs. If you are well, that proves God, if you are sick, that proves God, if times are good, that proves God, if times are bad, that proves God, if times remain the same, that proves God too.

Global Warming true believers are just the same. As per the above, you either swallow the whole climate change schtick or else you just haven't read the report.

Also when the weather is hotter, that's GW, when it's cooler, that's GW too, when it's drier, wetter, snowier, clearer, cloudier, ... or if it just stays the same .... that's all proof of global warming.

What's the weather going to be next month ... no, wait, don't tell me. It doesn't matter any way. It is proof of Global Warming!!! It's sooooo obvious!

All fundamentalists, religious or scientific, can take five shots to the head and not flinch. It's called "settled science."

99+% or scientists...please cite a reference to establish credibility.

Here's mine: http://tinyurl.com/cmfr7u

"Ninety-seven percent of the climate scientists surveyed believe “global average temperatures have increased” during the past century."

"Eighty-four percent say they personally believe human-induced warming is occurring, and 74% agree that “currently available scientific evidence” substantiates its occurrence. Only 5% believe that that human activity does not contribute to greenhouse warming; the rest are unsure."

"A slight majority (54%) believe the warming measured over the last 100 years is not “within the range of natural temperature fluctuation.”"

"Overall, only 5% describe the study of global climate change as a “fully mature” science, but 51% describe it as “fairly mature,” while 40% see it as still an “emerging” science. However, over two out of three (69%) believe there is at least a 50-50 chance that the debate over the role of human activity in global warming will be settled in the next 10 to 20 years."

"Only 29% express a “great deal of confidence” that scientists understand the size and extent of anthropogenic [human] sources of greenhouse gases,” and only 32% are confident about our understanding of the archeological climate evidence."

Here's a good one to pay attention to, MSM puppets:
"Only 1% of climate scientists rate either broadcast or cable television news about climate change as “very reliable.” Another 31% say broadcast news is “somewhat reliable,” compared to 25% for cable news. (The remainder rate TV news as “not very” or “not at all” reliable.) Local newspapers are rated as very reliable by 3% and somewhat reliable by 33% of scientists. Even the national press (New York Times, Wall St. Journal etc) is rated as very reliable by only 11%, although another 56% say it is at least somewhat reliable."

"Former Vice President Al Gore’s documentary film “An Inconvenient Truth” rates better than any traditional news source, with 26% finding it “very reliable” and 38% as somewhat reliable. Other non-traditional information sources fare poorly: No more than 1% of climate experts rate the doomsday movie “The Day After Tomorrow” or Michael Crichton’s novel “State of Fear” as very reliable."

Keith,

Sunspot count is very well correlated to the energy put out by the sun; it's directly measurable by the number of "solar wind"/elecromagnetic storms on sensors in orbit above the atomosphere. Much of the 1980's and 1990's was a period of rising sunspot activity, corresponding to rising . In fact, in the late 90's, there were incidents of solar wind knocking out parts of sattelites. Here is a link on sunspots:

http://www.coxeadvisors.com/Coxe_Advisors_-_Don_Coxe/Links.html

Sunspot count has collapsed in the last few years. 2008 had the lowest sunspot count since 1913; this year is even lower so far. 1913-14 should be numbers that ring a bell. The world went quickly from a period of prosperity to disaster, because people blieved that politicians had the solutions.

Keith, you keep getting back to this "your kids will hate you" bit.

Most generations hate the preceding one. The younger generation perceives the older as backwards, unable to grasp current understandings of science, politics, etc.

In some aspects it is mutual. I remember bumping a 12-year-old Gen Y punk with my car in the early 90s when he wouldn't get out of my way and asked what I was going to do about it. He started blubbering when I got out of my car and repeatedly slapped him across the face as I described how he'd be scraped off the pavement with a shovel if he kept it up. But after the tears I'm sure anger for the older generation grew in that little waste of tax dollars and carbon.

So if anyone is going to take notice of global warming because you say future generations will hate us, they really are just trying to avoid the inevitable. What a shock it will be for them when they see it didn't work! But since they are angry now anyway, the cause will be indistinguishable in their old age. If they make it to old age that is, without freaking out and doing us all a favor...

Maybe we're idiots for not taking Gore's gospel hook line and sinker, or maybe it's good there are smart people out there not taking anything as gospel truth. Regarding the 9:26 anon, true dat. I kind of hate my grandparents' generation for instituting social security. They instituted the pass-the-buck-to-the-next-generation policy, and frankly that makes them assholes. We're turning that policy into pass two or three bucks with our government's continuous debt-fueled irresponsibility, so that makes us assholes. But as individuals, we only bear so much culpability. The government doesn't exactly listen to us or do what we want it to do. I could choose to devote my life to changing things, and maybe I could make a dent of change, but it would be at the expense of all of my time and energy, to maybe make a dent. Short of that, I can vote, or bloviate my opinion, but those are more or less zero-impact activities. I figure my grandparents faced the same situation, so I don't hate them, I hate the bad decisions their government made, and I hate the bad decisions my government makes. I expect my grandkids will be smart enough to understand this eventually as well.

YAH, SURE.

Global Cooling was settled science.

Now... AGW anthropogenic global warming is settled science... whatever.

All generations hate the prior.

The arguable real problem is consumption of resources, pollution, etc... too many people. AGW is a straw man, a distraction to something we imagine we can fix since we cannot fix real problem... too many people.

Global Warming is a religion, a belief system untested and untestable, making zillions for the priest class such as Algore, who get, just like in ancient religion, INDULGENCES as part of their church to violate the very tenets they espouse... they buy "carbon credits", yah, sure.

Climate cycles are old news.

The measurement science used in AGW is pitiful.

The great religions cite unresesolvable belief conflict as proof of divinity... if we cannot explain it it must be true.

Global warming does same. If it gets hot, it's AGW. If it gets cold, it's AGW. If weather is predictable it's AGW. If weather unpredictable it's AGW.

Keith, perhaps you should just post a thread "Republicans are better than Democrats" or vice versa, if just want eyeballs. You'll get plenty of eyeballs. And that my friend is settled science you can take to the bank.

Apparently, sometime in the past, some bought&paid for hack coughed up some bullshit line about sunspots, and you've seized on it as a way to deny reality.

Pick and choose all you want, but the evidence is clear that Something Is Wrong. I've been to Patagonia, in Chile. I have walked up the slope of an active volcano that used to be covered in thick glacial ice year-round. There are now only isolated clumps of snow, where for millennia there had been ice.

But of course, the proof that ice existed in these places comes from science. From carbon-14 dating and other things that are "all sciency and stuff." Too hard to wrap your poor little heads around, wingnut weaklings. I watched An Inconvenient Truth about a year and a half ago. Like I always try to do, I watched a few videos that refuted everything Gore claimed and demonstrated on his documentary. Now I am conflicted about the whole thing. I think you are right about Gore being the wrong person to give this message. I do not believe that the planet is heating up, but I do think the climate is changing, as it always does. I don't think man is the sole cause, although we are part of it. To blame a dead polar bear on me driving a car that gets 19 mpg and not recycling my light bulbs really makes me think that the blamer has an agenda.

If you've seen Gore's movie, please watch The Great Global Warming Swindle, so that you can be as conflicted as I am.

Looks like keith was intellectually dishonest in mentioning Lake Chad as evidence for global warming.

It has an average depth of only 5ft and fed by just one river. Because of this, it has large seasonal fluctuations in size.

"A 2001 study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research blamed the lake's retreat largely on overgrazing in the area surrounding the lake, causing desertification and a decline in vegetation."

The UN Environment Programme says that about half of the lake's decrease is attributable to human water use such as inefficient damming and irrigation methods.

It nearly dried out in 1908 and 1984.

Lake sediments appear to indicate dry periods, when the lake nearly dried up, around 8500 BC, 5500 BC, 2000 BC, and 100 BC.

Where there SUVs then?

Keith,

Good post and embedded video, I'd not seen that before. Let me use my critical thinking skills on this movie:

The premise of the movie is that high carbon dioxide levels cause global warming, and that the carbon dioxide levels come from humans burning fossil fuel, such as oil, grasses and coals.

Let's respond to this:

1. Gore shows some nice charts correlating CO2 with temperature. As any thinking person knows, correlation doesn't equality causality. In this case, high CO2 and temperature could be correlated because a third or fourth factor is the cause. Or by looking at this correlated data, you could come to a hypothesis that increasing temperatures cause high CO2 levels and not vice versa.

Gore's hypothesis is the greenhouse effect, where CO2 blocks reflecting radiation from leaving the atmosphere. Well if that's true, then we should look at other greenhouse gases. For example, Methane has about 12 times more of a greenhouse effect than CO2 but that is absent from the analysis. There are other gases as well (CO, NOx) that have a greenhouse effect but these are out of the analysis.

2. Gore's analysis assumes that radiation intensity from the sun is uniform and we know that isn't the case. Solar intensity (solar flares for example)increases and decreases- there is some evidence that we are in an increased solar cycle right now.

3. Let's talk about carbon- as we know all matter in the form of elements cannot be destroyed except in a nuclear reaction. So there always has been about the same amount of carbon on planet earth since the universe was formed. This can be in the form of CO2, or in hydrocarbons or plant and animal matter. Was this not all in the atmosphere at one point? I guess we don't have data to show this, at least as presented in the video.

4. The video shows that CO2 levels have risen and fallen noting that current levels are higher than what's been measured as of 650,000 years ago in anarctic ice. OK, but what is the mechanism for CO2 levels to go down after they increase? Is this plants consuming more CO2 when the levels are higher? Could it be possible that more CO2 in the atmosphere will mean plant matter grows more quickly, that then brings the CO2 levels back down? What is the limit of this effect?

5. As most of us realize, we are running out of oil and will produce less and less each year. This will force us to limit our emissions whether we like it or not. Coal will last longer but will ultimately be subject to the same effect. This inconvenient truth is not discussed in this video.

6. It does appear that sea levels will rise and storms will intensify- but this will happen regardless of what we do assuming the link between CO2 and temperatures are correct.

7. What I don't like is this video attempts to overlap politics on science, in the form of a carbon tax or some other system. This video puts the uninformed into panic and fools them into accepting the agenda of the PTB. Folks, take a deep breath and think about this before turning to panic. That's what the gov't did after 9/11, that's what they did to get the TARP bailout through, and there is an element of this in this movie.

8. On the polar bears drowning, how about releasing a few platforms in the artic that will allow polar bears to rest on their journey. You can even make a floating hotel so tourists can see the bears come up onto the hotel as they rest.

Yes, we will have to make provisions to deal with the potential for storms, flooding and drought. We will need to do this regardless... don't fall into giving away more liberties to the elite in the form of carbon taxes!

Keith, I'd appreciate your thoughts on the points I've raised. From a critical thinking perspective.

i've had it said...

Keith,

to paraphrase Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) in Annie Hall: I think you're due back on planet earth soon.

The "science" around so-called anthropomorphic warming is certainly NOT settled.

As we all know, the earth has gotten hot and cold throughout its life. Today, there is a stream of thought that carbon - produced from human economic activity - is causing this purported warming, but it's just a theory...that's all. Sorry to burst your, and other peoples' dogma bubbles.

I have read the IPCC executive summaries for the first two reports and I can say that both were incredibly unconvincing. The methodologies employed to measuring temperatures is very inconsistent and there is vast room for error based on their sampling techniques. Furthermore, wild ass guesses are made based earth and ice cores that simply have a very low confidence interval for accuracy. In the 2nd report, the authors even went so far as to describe a problem (they admitted this actually) with measuring sea temperatures on a consistent basis because one ship used a metal container to hold the water so the temp could be measured while another used a wood container; the problem being that wood and metal dissipate heat at different rates.

In addition, neither of these reports did any research into the sun as a possible cause for warming that the authors say is happening. The authors just dismissed out of hand the largest and hottest object near us as being a possible cause of warming that they say is happening. And as far as i know, the third report dismisses solar radiation out of hand as well, if I recall (I did not not read it since I thought the first two were hogwash).

In the UK, Al Gore's film has been banned from schools by the judiciary because it deemed it propaganda and not a documentary.

The infamous hockey stick graph (which showed steady temps until the 1960's when the graph went up to the right dramatically) was proven to be a fraud.

Even with record cold temperatures throughout the globe in the last few years (for example, China in 2007 with it's record snowfalls and low temps), the global warming cultists just ignore all of the evidence against their theory.

Moreover, there are many more scientists who don't believe in this theory than do believe. It just so happens that the ones who do believe it are the ones who are in position of power in our universities and various govt. departments. They get the money and they call the shots. And, since the media is 90% Leftist, they just go along with their own personal views on the topic.

In addition to this, these Leftists are the same folks who want a global government, and this global warming canard is the best way for them to achieve that objective. Why? Because it requires a world body to regulate all commerce. And that body has to be run by a world government, not by the U.S., or the EU, or Asia. These people want to rule the world, and they want to do it from Brussels. All roads "warming" lead to Brussels. The place where blood-sucking n'eer do-wells sit in offices and figure out how they can rule the world. And they are using this theory on warming as the vehicle to do just that.

There is such overwhelming evidence against anthropomorphic warming it is too vast to go into here. However, for sashers who have an open mind, do the research on this and you will see that there really is no evidence that the earth is warming...certainly not like the global warming cult says it is now or will in the future.

Every few days I read new articles that proclaim that the end of the Arctic is near, or that the floating ice of Antarctica is breaking off and melting into the sea...and I just LAUGH. Today I saw that Time has another cover story on so-called global warming. Gee Whiz!

In a few short years, this hysteria will subside and the Left will say (like they usually do when the create needless hysterias that always prove to be false, like Alar in apples, an increase in men beating their wives over superbowl weekend, 150k women dying each year of anorexia, polar bear population almost extinct, etc. etc. etc. ad naseum) that, "Well, it was worth it anyway since having less carbon can't, after all, hurt us".

Keith, you're a smart guy but you have been had on this one. Start reading what the opponents of this theory have to say.

And for crying out loud: STOP READING WIKEPEDIA!!!!

How come they changed the name from global warming to climate change? Because there is no warming. How come it's a global problem? Because a global problem requires a global solution. Didn't the earth get much warmer in the middle ages? Yes, it was because of sun spots.

Mike Hunt said...

Here is a link on the varying intensity of the sun:

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2003/17jan_solcon.htm

I forgot to comment on the point that as polar ice melts then there is less reflected radiation and this will create a runaway increase in solar absorbtion.

Think about it. If the Arctic goes ice-free in the summer when it's usually 20% covered then what is the percentage of the surface area of earth that in going to absorb more energy. The arctic is only about 3% of the earths surface area and this effect is just for a month or two. So it's far less than 0.5% of an effect.

Do the maths before jumping to conclusions.

Of course the earth is warming, we just came out of the little ice age and it just so happens that man was finally smart enough to measure temperatures accurately just as this little ice age was ending, so naturally temperatures will go up, but not because of anything we are doing. It is mother nature and is people have built too close to the ocean, then they will pay a price eventually.

There are plenty of scientists who do not believe the hype about manmade global warming. Al Gore won't debate on it anymore, since when does he set the rules?

We are entering another dark ages, just watch what the world's governments do now. Fools, all of them!!!

Say what you will about it, but global warming is our best chance of being discovered by an alien civilization. The 7 sigma anomaly in our planet's blackbody radiation and solar absorption spectroscopy records caused by burning all the planet's fossil fuel in a few hundred years will the the strongest most detectable evidence of intelligent life we will ever radiate to the heavens. Far more energy concentrated in a more detectable signal than all our puny lasers, radio waves, nuclear events and the like combined. Who cares if we destroy the human population and all life on Earth? This is our best chance to achieve something greater than ourselves.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the blog Keith, I share this site with many of my coworkers and my kids. I have some comments about this post though, please allow my comments to be posted.

The Bible says through one man came death, and through one man comes life. But if evolution were true, then death, being part of the survival of the fittest, best DNA wins scenario, would have entered the world from the beginning. Both positions cannot be equally valid.

Jesus refers to Adam and Eve, was he lying? Jesus refers to several events recorded in Genesis, should we disbelieve those as well as the creation sequence?

As for Creationism, it explains and predicts the precambrian explosion in the fossil record, for example.

Evolution requires belief in long ages, but all rock dating methods, such as readioactive isotope measurements, rely on two unproveable unknowable aspects, a) the original ratio of parent to daughter material, b) whether the sample was contaminated through waterborne material.

Creationists believe that adaptation is part of the variability built into existing DNA, while evolutionists falsely claim it proves evolution. Most of the high priesthood of evolution understand that random DNA errors could never turn a single celled organism into a complex creature, even with with the magix pixie dust of millions of years added in.

Lastly, just like Global Climate Change, there is no possible evidence that could ever force a change in an Evolutionists position. We all have the same data, but it is how it gets interepreted.

Herald (04/06/09) -- South Florida temperatures to get chilly

Students, don't worry, the chill isn't going to ruin spring break.

The coldest temperatures South Florida is likely to face -- low 50s for metro Miami-Fort Lauderdale and upper 40s further inland -- will come overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

Just be thankful we're not in North Texas, where the same cold system has prompted freeze warnings, or in the Carolinas, where it's expected to dump inches of snow.

http://tinyurl.com/cbsq4w

Hoooweee, this Al Gore-Pelosi-Gordon Brown-Olbermann-Maher global "warming" is freezing us to death! It'll be 40 degrees down there in South Florida tomorrow, in APRIL.

Pay carbon taxes to your European masters and their puppets in Washington, suckers! Europe is bankrupt, so they need the Americans to be supporting their arses with phony carbon taxes, as usual.

Oh, and let me guess, all the carbon taxes will go to a "World" Central Bank which will be located in Europe, right?

Gordon Brown and Pelosi are selling this Ponzi scheme like crazy, so it must be good, right? Right?

Lastly, every time you hear news of terrorism attacks or any other violent incident in Europe, it's ALL a false flag attack to control the sheep, to keep them scared, to manipulate the masses, to pass New World Order agenda.

BTW, what do you have to say now that the phrase "NEW WORD ORDER" is being mentioned in the media daily? The New York Times, Financial Times, Fox, CNN, Newsweek, Times, Telegraph, etc, etc, etc, ALL mentioning "NEW WORLD ORDER" in big letters. You retards said that was a myth, a conspiracy theory, it didn't exist, right? How come all the corrupt media's been now selling New World Order weekly, along with every speech from Gordon Brown, as being something "good"? Before it didn't exist, but now not only it exists but it's sold as something "good" to us. Do you see how mind game/psyop works on your brain, sheeple?

I know it's a waste of time because you've been all domesticated already. You love to see military next to local police doing DUI check points. You don't even question that, that it's not only unconstitutional but a psyop so you can get used to see military in the streets, asking you for papers. The same thing with x-rays on airports...you love it! The Messiah voted for the extension of the wire-tapping on American citizens bill, and you all had an orgasm. You love to be live in a gestapo environment.

Keith:

Global warming secondary to atmospheric CO2 levels is junk science. Several points in this regard:

1. Atmospheric water vapor content, which varies from 0-3% (v/v), influences temperature far more than CO2, which is present only in ppm (i.e.less than .035%). Water vapor is also superior to CO2 in absorption of infrared radiation and has a higher heat capacity. In short, water vapor influences on atmospheric temperatures totally swamp CO2 influences, by many orders of magnitude. (http://www.nov55.com/wat.html)
2. In his presentation on CO2 levels in arctic ice core samples, Gore incorrectly stated that CO2 levels preceded global temperatures. This is categorically false. Look at the plots: global temperature increases PRECEDED CO2 level increases. This is the false kernel of the global warming theory. In fact, oceanic dissolved CO2 is released into the atmosphere in response to rising temperatures (e.g. Boyles law). CO2 content of present day oceans far exceeds man-made CO2, by several orders of magnitude.

For the record, global temperatures have been dropping for over ten years. They are dropping because of declining solar activity and reduced infrared radiation from the sun.
