Did you ever think you'd live to see the day that a black American president would nominate an Hispanic woman appeals judge for the Supreme Court?

Especially after an army of coddled and corrupt white men ran the nation into the ground?

If this day doesn't give you hope for America, nothing will. And that would be too bad. Because America is moving on - with or without you.

Keith,

I for one am happy he chose her. However, not for the disgusting negative racial spin YOU put on it.

Sure Keith, it makes a huge difference to replace those "coddled and corrupt white men" with angry and corrupt people of color. I lived in the city of Atlanta during the three decades when the white good ol' boys were swept out of power and replaced by the black power elites. The city declined in many ways, and the level of corruption soared. Now it's run by a bunch of black good 'ol boys.

Obama showed his stripes with the inane requisites he placed on Supreme court candidates. The guy is a Bolshevik with $300 ties and a nice smile. When he gets done with this country it will be a worker's paradise - just like Cuba and Venezuela.

If they loved America so much, why did they fight so hard to export our jobs overseas?

I still don't see what race has to do with it. Those two can be just as corrupt as the "white folks."

I used to care about this sort of thing when I was a high school and college student. At this point I just want to see the most qualified and least corrupt candidate get the job. We've created a situation where this is now impossible. Thanks MSM.

A Judge’s View of Judging Is on the Record

By CHARLIE SAVAGE

WASHINGTON — In 2001, Sonia Sotomayor, an appeals court judge, gave a speech declaring that the ethnicity and sex of a judge “may and will make a difference in our judging.”

In her speech, Judge Sotomayor questioned the famous notion — often invoked by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her retired Supreme Court colleague, Sandra Day O’Connor — that a wise old man and a wise old woman would reach the same conclusion when deciding cases.

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” said Judge Sotomayor ...

==============================

In other words, what she says is, being an effective judge not an intellectual process. It is a gender and ethnicity experience. In her mind, superior justice is a determination of innocence or guilt made by being a judge properly biased or prejudiced with respect to gender or ethnicity. Lady justice should not have a blind fold. And "Equal Justice Under Law” should be put on a curve, using gender and ethnicity.

Appalling.

Here's my favorite part ...

... There are also many reservations about Sotomayor. They expressed questions about her temperament, her judicial craftsmanship, and most of all, her ability to provide an intellectual counterweight to the conservative justices, as well as a clear liberal alternative.

The most consistent concern was that Sotomayor, although an able lawyer, was "not that smart and kind of a bully on the bench," as one former Second Circuit clerk for another judge put it. "She has an inflated opinion of herself, and is domineering during oral arguments, but her questions aren't penetrating and don't get to the heart of the issue." (During one argument, an elderly judicial colleague is said to have leaned over and said, "Will you please stop talking and let them talk?")

===============

In other words, she's not any better or worse, she's just as dim, just as mediocre, just as mean, just as bullying as Keith's big, old, meany, incompetent white men.

But she's got 2 ovaries, a vagina and is not white. So that makes her 'better'. Pathetic.... R.I.P America. Go ahead. Call me a mysogynist racist now.

A senate of all white men - bad idea. A line of presidents of all white men - bad idea. A supreme court with all white men - bad idea. Fortune 500 CEOs all white men - bad idea.

I hope she ends up being a solid legal scholar. Not an idiot like Clarence Thomas.

I hope she ends up being a moderate straight-shooter, like O'Connor or Kennedy. Not a fringe nut like Scalia or Alito.

The possibility of supreme court openings was the #1 reason I supported Obama. One wingnut right winger replacing any of the left or center would have been catastrophic for the US. Now we just replace one with someone similar and the court maintains balance. It's still too fringe right wing, but it's near balance. If Scalia, Alito or Thomas go away in the next seven years though, then we'll be getting somewhere.

Having clerked on the US Court of Appeals, worked at a white shoe firm in DC, and being generally familiar with the ways of el law, I applaud this decision. Sotomayor was a very well respected federal district court judge, and serves as a highly regarded appeals court judge on one of the best Circuits (the 2nd) in the land. And yes, she graduated summa from Princeton and later, from Yale law school. So there's that.

So she's no dummy. I don't agree with her on everything, but she's smart and deliberate. And Keith's right, intelligence is important in this particular job, above everything.

And while I do agree that Thomas is a subpar SCT Justice, he's no Sarah Palin. Come on, Keith. Even I wont go that far.

i've had it said...

keith,

sometimes your posts are so whacked out it makes me worried about you.

your hatred of white guys is simply off the charts. there was no need for you to ruin a perfectly appropriate post by mentioning white males in the bush administration, or on the supreme court.

also, you are too fixated on race, ethnicity, gender, etc.; none of these things makes a difference; what makes the difference is ideas. if the new supreme court candidate's ideas are good then great. if they are bad, then toss her.

we'll have to look at her record to see if she shows too much bias or radicalness. if she does, then she should be tossed. if she's middle of the road, then she should be confirmed.

does anyone know if a white male was on the long or short list? i don't recall reading anything about a white male being cosidered for the open slot. if none were, then i think that's a huge problem and shows this pick is simply an affirmative action hire.

To watch the first African-American President from a broken family promote to the U.S. Supreme Court an Hispanic woman from a broken neighborhood was one of those moments that Americans will long savor. In his announcement today of his first nominee to the Court, President Obama quickly brought back memories of why the country elected him.

I was in the White House in 1981 when President Reagan nominated Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman to join the Court, and I can remember greeting her in Chief of Staff Jim Baker’s office just before the announcement. It was Reagan’s first nomination, too – a highly symbolic occasion – and enormous pride flowed through every one of us present that day.

President Obama’s announcement stirred those same, overwhelming feelings. It is said that a president campaigns in poetry and governs in prose. Today was almost all poetry. It is likely to be remembered as one of the President’s finest hours.
