US to flu-infected Mexicans - "Come on in Muchachos!"
And then the irrational desire to be politically correct sickened a nation, and caused a pandemic.
Monkeys I tell ya.

Actually, as I understood the logic: Its already IN the US, closing the borders isnt gonna do much to help.
It's already too late.
The time to act has passed.
Wouldn't want to offend anyone, you know.
Not only should we seal the border, but also severely cut back spending.
True; we should have done the latter while we could better afford it, but how better to really put this nation and the whole world on it's knees?
Tariffs, higher taxes...we gotta get responsible NOW. ;^)
Mexico plans shutdown as WHO raises flu alert ... now that is interesting .. what's next ? shutting down the plants, businesses in usa, asia, all over the world ?
Nobody in this country (The United States of La La Land) even cares about this.
As hyper-reactive people are in the USA are about certain things, you know, political correctness....
...they still don't give a sh*t about the borders, even when the illegals are bringing in a pandemic disease?
Priorities do seem completely schizo in this country and now with the Hate-Bill passing, saying anything "bad" about someone is, oh-soooo evil and dangerous!
Why don't we just change the name of the country to, "the land of serious a-holes".
...please wake me up when we go over 35000+ deaths caused every year by a regular flu. Or 3000+ daily abortions. Or.... You get the idea. Some "pandemic"...
Actually, as I understood the logic: Its already IN the US, closing the borders isnt gonna do much to help.

that is what they say but when you are facing something like this you should go ahead and close it. it may be too late but I don't see how letting more sick people in is a good idea. perhaps maybe, just maybe it might help to keep them out.
oh well, we wouldn't want to offend future democrats.
Obama is planning on "immigration reform". I just love the play on semantics. War is peace, a 6.1% contraction in the economy is good news not bad, etc...
I read that a study by S&P and Moody's concluded that there are 30 million illegals in our country. I live in Chicago, "a sanctuary city" where the police are not even allowed to ask if a person is a legal resident and they can not even inquire with a federal agency!
So it seems like this year, this President is going to "give a pathway for citizenship" for millions of illegal aliens. And I think this time, the GOP, the loyal opposition will just roll over because if they oppose it, then the hispanics might end up like blacks; 90% of them voting for the Democratic party and thus this would mean the end of the GOP.
yeah, i thought the main vector spreading the flu was U.S. tourists returning home.
Keith,
The kids who brought the flu Cancun to NYC were full-blooded Americans. Are you saying all Americans should be shot at the border when they come back from a trip or vacation?
Border enforcement and trade restrictions are not free. It's a bit like enforcing state sales tax laws. Do you really want jack booted thugs posted on every road leading into the state, stopping and searching every car and collecting sales tax on anything and everything being brought into the state? Technically, it is illegal to buy goods outside the state and do not pay sales/use tax to the state that you are residing in.
Keith, as you have observed so many times, many man-made laws and regulations are just political sobs to special interest groups and what the politicians can get away with. Taxes and victim-less crimes are classic examples of those; strict enforcement would only expose the absurdity of the laws themselves.
You can't stop a flu pandemic. Sorry, it's impossible. Slowing it down can buy you time to get a vaccine for the rich though.
You thought the Katrina reels were pathetic, wait until you see the canyon between the classes in the US when a flu pandemic breaks out (not necessarily this one, but one is inevitable).
Ummm, check the FACTS.
Actually, how it got into the U.S. was AMERICANS travelling to Mexico on vacation from New York.
So, from now on, whenever idiot alcolholic sex-crazed college students go to Mexico for spring break or any other time to get drunk, get laid, and destroy hotels, let's bar THEM from coming back in to the U.S.!!!
(I think in this case it was high school students though, so perhaps we can assume they weren't drunk--although probably high and certainly still sex-crazed.
Oh, and by the way--if you don't like having as many pigs and pig feces around to get infected from, STOP EATING PORK, BACON, HAM, AND SAUSAGE!!!!
CBS 60 minutes had an episode last year about pig farms with the exact conditions right here in the Carolinas.
It is disgusting how these pig farms are run, poisoning everything imaginable.
Soon we will have one hell of an epidemic outbreak here. Will the EU ban Americans from entering?
more people die of REGULAR flu every day in the USA. More people die of TB, of car crashes.
it's a trick. Get an axe.

109 Confirmed Cases Now.
On my local news, 5 in Maryland were "probable."
Keith, I though you were putting a stop anonymous posters? The last one made me hungry for some bacon and a beer.
According to a few posters, evidently the swine flu virus is racist. Imagine that!! Even a tiny little microbe like a virus can be racist!!
According to the posters, only white American kids (who are all supposedly alcoholics) can transport the virus from Mexico to the USA. Hmmm, that's an interesting brand of science they adhere to. Let's call it "The Politically Correct Science".
Evidently that brand of science requires you filter out certain facts and data points. Facts like a Mexican family brought a toddler to Texass, already sick, and the child died from the virus.
Let's review that case:
1) Border officials fail to restrict sick humans with the H1N1 virus from entering the USA.
(Although U.S. border officials say they are doing it now)
2) Mexican parents seek health care from the USA health care system.
(Oh, but wait! According to the open borders crowd, they dont EVER leach off the U.S healthcare system)
3) Mexican nationals are bringing in disease, and THEY KNOW they are doing it!
(So much for just white kids doing this).
We are run by Monkeys? Hardly. I wouldn't want to insult the intelligence of an average monkey. This is sub monkey IQ type behavior. This is pure self defeating madness.
BTW: Reporters on T.V are actually saying "you can't call it the Mexican Swine Flu". It makes Mexico look bad. And it hurts the pork industry also. They want to only call it the H1N1 virus.
LOL!!!!
Yeah, let's keep reporting about how obese Americans are, but then in the next breath worry about a reduction of intake of incredibly fat food products! F*cking brilliant!
This country is f*cking nuts.

How about we give the returning tourists a four week vacation in a FEMA Camp?
I think the GOP has two graves
One is in Crawford, Texas
The other is in Wasilla, Alaska.
Feel free to visit.
Gutless and Lazy,
The NYC city kids who brought the flu from Cancun are not Mexicans. Stopping Mexicans wouldn't have prevented the problem; nor would slaughtering all pigs. It's not about political correctness. Frankly, I don't care about Mexicans or pigs. I just don't want my tax money wasted on quanrantining Mexicans or slaughtering pigs (or quarantining pigs and slaughter . . . , you get the picture). Policies are not free, enforcement is not free. The more drastic the measure, the more costly it is. You and I are the ones ending up footing the bills.
As for border agents' failure to stop XYZ, it's preposterous to expect them to stop much of anything. How is that war on drugs going? The last time I read in the papers, drugs are cheaper on the street than ever before.
All the silly enforcements can accomplish is browing bureacracy, taking more Americans off from productive works and put them into non-productive bureacratic jobs . . . that creates an even bigger draw to suck Mexicans in to do the real work that needs to be done, lest our standards of living collapses.
Yes, isn't that last point rather ironic? The more Americans get towards government make-belief jobs (including border enforcement), the more immigrants will be drawn in by market forces to fill the void left behind for doing real jobs that pay relatively little compared to government make-belief jobs. Goes to show you why a command economy is self-defeating.

This is akin to saying you shouldn't blame the rats for the plague.
After all, it's the bugs ON rats carry that caused the problems, not the rats themselves. So lets go ahead and save rats from a bad rap.
Meanwhile obese Americans, go ahead and gobble down more pork rinds and bacon. It's 'SAFE'.
WE ARE SUFFERING FROM A WORLD WIDE CASE OF INSANITY!!!!!
Anon,
"How about we give the returning tourists a four week vacation in a FEMA Camp?"
hahaha, the Soviets once had something similar to that, although the fear wasn't medical disease, but the psychological disease called "concepts of liberty and freedom" that soviets who had exposure to the Western world were deemed to suffer from after their trips abroad. That was a dangerous disease, all right, for the soviet state.
Open borders forever! That's how the whores in D.C. will get more ignorant voters and more cheap labor for their corporate pimps.
Gutless and Lazy,
Killing the rats did not stop the Plague. Besides, it was/is quite impossible to kill all rats. What stopped the Plague was that the population eventually developed immunity to the Plague pathogen itself.
More importantly, rats do not have proper owners, but pigs are private properties. While the government officials may indulge themselves with rat round-up parties at relatively low cost if volunteers are used . . . although I wouldn't participate in those gatherings as the gatherings themselves would help spread the disease through increased human contact. Killing all pigs however would entail either confiscation or compensation for pig farmers . . . since the government bureacrats have no clue about price without the free market, it's impossible to avoid paying farmers both either too little or too much.
Pigs can get flu, so can other livestock animals, and other human beings. In order to keep yourself absolutely safe for the future, you should really petition the government to kill all other livestock animals (and wild animals, e.g. pararie dogs, a rodent, spreading the Plague in the moutain states now), and all other human beings. Good luck with that agenda.
Anon,
If you would like fully closed borders (or at least that being the official policy of the state), North Korea would be a great place for you. Chances are that North Koreans will be spared from the Mexican flu; none of them has the money to go on vacation there. Those who are lucky enough to get out of North Korea probably don't want to get back in anyway, so there you go, another source of contagious disease eliminated. Yup, close all borders to prevent disease; it will also prevent all sorts of other complicated problems of modern life when everyone gets a government set ration of rice and beans.
Bacon is not fattening unless you drink beer at breakfast while eating bacon. Bacon is part of Atkins Diet for weight loss. I have bacon every weekend, and so does my child; both of us are at the low end of the weight scale for what is medically considered heathy. What we avoid in our diet is high fructose corn syrup, which IMHO is one of the leading reasons behind American overweightness.
The pigs are innocent! LOL! I like my bacon and eggs breakfast, once a week.
This isn't trivial. The Health and Human Services Pandemic Influenza Plan estimates the US health impacts of a pandemic as in the following range, depending on severity:
Number of ill: 90 million (30% of population)
Number requiring outpatient medical care: 45 million (45%-50% of the ill)
Number hospitalized: 0.865 million - 9.9 million
Number of deaths: 209,000 - 1,903,000
There is also the risk that so many people become ill that the normal functioning of society is endangered. The National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza prepared by the Homeland Security Council warns that a severe pandemic “will ultimately threaten all critical infrastructure by removing essential personnel from the workplace for weeks or months”.
In our interconnected society, many factors can interact to keep people out of the workplace -- sickness, fear, closure of nonessential businesses, border closings, caring for the ill at home, etc. If a severe pandemic comes, the government estimates might not be so wildly off.
All of these statistics and more about pandemic influenza are collected at calibansmarket.blogspot.com.
Yes, a pandemic will happen, at some point in the future . . . just as a nuke will go off somewhere in the world some time in the future, and the US will be invaded by someone or something in the future. It does not however justify mandating everyone to build a fall-out shelter in the backyard, complete with food and electrolysis for making fresh oxygen.
For every action we take, especially those we demand the law enforcement to make it happen (or at least spend their time and resources on), there is opportunity cost.
For context, 35,000 Americans die from car accidents every year, and another 35,000 every year from regular flu! and millions of people get sick from regular flue every year! The Mexican Swine flue so far has only claimed about 100 people sick; nobody has died in the US yet. Let's not get into a hurry chopping our noses off to spite our faces.
Reality said, "What we avoid in our diet is high fructose corn syrup, which IMHO is one of the leading reasons behind American overweightness."

Another one of the leading reasons behind American obesity, especially among children, is that even when the weather outside is delightful so many people prefer to sit on their fat a$$ in front of a computer while shoving junk food into their mouth.
Plant a garden; get outside with a shovel and turn the soil, plant seeds, weed, carry around a watering can...this will help one get into shape.
Oh, and my vote is for quarantining pigs and slaughtering illegal...never mind, it wouldn't be politically correct to finish this sentance.
-Mammoth
Mammoth,
Agree with you on the virtues of gardening. Besides exercise and fun in the sun, another unexpected benefit of starting a veggie garden with my three year old to teach her where food comes from, is that she absolutely loves the veggies coming out of the garden! Normally, she would only touch the meats, fish and dairy products in her plate, but the tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and beans from our own garden is just so much tastier :-) Who knows, perhaps the kido can taste the preservatives and pesticides in industrial farming. LOL.
Regarding the wholesale slaughtering of entire groups, well, one doesn't have to be a great humanitarian to see the problem with that:
1. The astronomical cost to work against the self-preservation instincts of millions of people. As much as there are sadists who would enjoy that line of work, putting them into government uniforms, keeping them and their family fed-clothed-sheltered, and preventing their habits from spilling out of their work place are not free.
2. I have an 140+ IQ, but I presume that out of the millions of "illegals," some of them have even higher IQ's than that of mine. A government system that can defeat those "illegals" and successfullly nab them for "slaughtering" can potentially be a serious danger to all of us lesser mortals.

Dear Gutless and Lazy:
Why do you generalize what the opposition says? There are multiple points of view (not just black or white, liberal or conservative, etc...). Yet, you choose the most extreme comments made by journalists, individuals, etc... And then on top of it all, you just say anyone who disagrees with you is being "politically correct".
You are being very illogical (fallacy of dichotomy).
It's not racist to advocate legal immigration and to stop illegal immigration. Think about it. We get what we reward.
What do we want more of: professionals with skills, education, and the ability to contribute to the American economy?
Or do we want people with the ability to sneak across the border and crap out a child before the INS finds them?
We could have had the entire professional and scientific population of the Eastern Bloc in the 1990s. Instead, we chose marginally cheaper lawn care and restaurant meals.
Anon,
"It's not racist to advocate legal immigration and to stop illegal immigration"
Notice, I never accused anyone here of being racist. I'm against arbitrary government rules on what is "legal" and what is "illegal." I have met many former Eastern Bloc academics (the grad schools of this country are chock full of them), and I'm not impressed with many of them at all. Many of the "visiting scholars" with advanced degrees have no marketable skills in the real world whatsoever; many of the "software engineers" super-annuated in their national academies of sciences are no better programmers than some geeky high school kids in this country (or in their own countries).
The market place itself is far better at identifying talents and skills that are useful and marketable than a bunch of bureaucrats using "uniform standards" based on paper diplomas.
Instead of a bureacratic standards barring the entrance door, we need to let the market place decide which which immigrants can make it here and become contributing members to the our economy and which ones can't. That means, getting in should be easy, welfare (and consequently taxation on them or us) should be nearly non-existent; those who can not make it here will find their own incentives to get back out and seek the safety net of their own home countries.
BTW, that 'slaughtering' comment was really just off the cuff, in S&A politically incorrect fashion.
It is a spillover from the widespread frustration felt, as a result of this country literally being invaded, and the government has done nothing about it.
-Mammoth
Mammaoth,
No woorries. I'm not PC police; IIRC, I was the one started the "quarantine pigs and . . ." (outrageous) joke. In difficult times, people gravitate towards extreme solutions, usually making the situation worse; we need to be mindful of that, 'cuz our own future well being and that of our children depend on our timely and rational choices.
The government is not the solution; the government is the problem. That applies to taxes, regulations, welfare, education, medicine . . . and immigration. The more government officials are put in place to stop the flow of immigrants, the more Americans are pulled out productive jobs to do those non-productive jobs, leaving an even greater labor vacuum to suck in immigrants. The border agent's own lawn needs to be cared for, and it's not going to be done by anoter border agent during after-hours; the government has to pay people above free market rates in order to get people to quit their normal 9-5 jobs and take those potentially dangerous "enforcement" jobs instead, which means they are not going to be doing menial jobs themselves.
Every ton of cement put into the border wall is a ton of cement pulled off the domestic market and would need more import replacement. Every single worker put into building that wall is an American worker lost to domestic productive labor pool, and has to be replaced by import when needed. Government is not able to time when we need extra workers when we do not better than the free market itself.
Immigration (trade deficit in labor) and trade deficit in goods are direct results of our government's overspending. The answer to those problems is not more government overspending on "enforcement."
