Britain's Speaker of Parliament got the boot today - first time in over 300 years. Why? You got it. Housing.

Just wait until they investigate the crap the US Senators and Representatives were doing with their mortgages and expenses.

Oh, wait, my bad. They're not investigating that. And the American MSM sits on their asses too. Oh well. Would have been a good story.

Britain's speaker resigns in scandal over expenses

For the first time in 300 years, the speaker of the British House of Commons has resigned following taxpayer outrage over excessive spending by lawmakers, the BBC reports.

Though Michael Martin was not personally singled out for the spending excesses, which included chandeliers, moat cleaning and mortgage payments, he was blamed for creating an atmosphere in which the excessive spending flourished, the Associated Press reports.

Martin, who will step down June 21, had resisted efforts to make the expenses process more transparent and to publish the claims.

It is the first time a speaker has been effectively forced out since 1695, the BBC says.

Britain sinks into deflation abyss
Tuesday, May 19, 2009
The British have succumbed to the scourge of deflation and about all the rest of the world can do now is bid them a fond farewell - they've entered the abyss, as reported by the Telegraph.

Britain sinks into deepest deflation since 1948
The British economy sank deeper into deflation last month to the lowest level in more than 60 years as the effect of falling house prices and lower mortgage repayments escalated.

Inflation on the Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure, which includes housing costs, dropped sharply to -1.2pc in the year to April, from -0.4pc in March, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Tuesday.

It was the lowest RPI figure since records began in 1948, and weaker than economists had expected.
