Radical cleric Pat Robertson issues fatwah against Haitians, cites their "pact with the devil", says the destruction of their homes is a "blessing"

Please donate to the Red Cross as they work courageously to save the lives of millions of desperate Haitians today and in the weeks and months to come.

And please join me in wishing Pat Robertson, snake oil salesman extraordinaire and former Republican candidate for president, a lovely time in hell, once he finally gets there.

Sane muslims need to cast out the devils amongst them. Sane christians should do the same.

Donate to the Red Cross in Pat Robertson's name. Channel your hatred for scum like him into something good.

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - In the frightening pitch black of quake-stricken Haiti's night, religious songs rise from groups of people huddled in open spaces for safety and solidarity.

The chanting and clapping, mainly by women, echo from hill to hill, street to street, as Haitians pray for their dead and ask God to spare them more suffering after an earthquake that has killed thousands and flattened much of the capital.

While the widespread singing provides comfort, the jarring shrieks and sobs of injured children -- some lying in the street clutching bloody gashes -- are a haunting reminder of the untended suffering in Haiti.

"Oh my God, who will help my country now?" said Manuel Deheusch, a Haitian businessman who came rushing back from neighboring Dominican Republic to check on his friends, family and properties.

Keith, we can spend ages arguing about who is what. IMO, the world has a "religion" problem, especially when religion is used to fan hatred and discord among humans.
The world has also an ignorance problem, and most of our ills stem from the lethal mix of ignorance and religion.
For decades, the US had encouraged radical Koranic schools across the Muslim world as a tool to help defeat communism (atheism). Now that communism is basically gone, the US is facing the consequences of its own miscalculations.
All the poor masses see is a US policy bent on occupying their land and pillaging their resources.
You ask why moderate Muslims are doing nothing to stop terrorism. The answer is that, contrary to what you think, moderate intellectuals are not sitting idle, but they have a real problem here: In their vocal opposition to terrorism, they always come across as espousing the rhetoric of the US Government and that of their own corrupt regimes.
Moderate voices in the Muslim world are being heard all over the place, day and night, but they have no real punch, for they hold the same views as those of their governments, and their governments views are dictated by the US, or so they are perceived.
Moderates have no real chance, as most regimes in place have long been discredited by the empty promises they have repeatedly given to the masses for a better life, a real democracy, real freedoms, and especially a face-saving peace with Israel and an end to the daily killing of Muslim and Arab civilians.
The vast majority of Muslims are peaceful people, but time is not on their side. I am afraid that the more this sense of injustice drags on, the more the ranks of Al Qaeda will swell and become more widespread and more lethal.
I think you would agree that Christian and Jewish extremists are no less dangerous than their Muslim counterparts (ask Rabin's widow). They are all driven by hatred, and the great majority of politicians use religion and the ignorance of the sheeple for their own selfish gains. Just imagine our world with Pat Robertson in the White House, with all that nuclear arsenal at his fingertips!
What the world needs right now is a coalition of wise men and women, whereby Christian thinkers decry Christian extremism and terrorism, Jewish scholars denounce radical views and actions of their own coreligionists, and Muslim moderates stand up to their own terrorists.
The initiative, in all three monotheistic religions, must not be left in the hands of clerics, even if they pretend to be moderates. I have personally attended a few "interfaith dialogue" conferences, but whenever clerics were involved, all I saw was attempts by the clerics to convert one another! I saw no dialogue whatsoever!

What an imbecile. Yes, the deal with the devil those uppity slaves must have made. Who did the US make a deal with to keep the Duvaliers and the Tontons Macoute knee-deep in cash and ammunition for 30 years?

All of you fundamentalist libertarians out there please take note: Haiti has no national building code and no way to enforce its standards if they had one.

Oh come on Keith, "fatwah"? Sure Robertson is a douche, maybe even senile, but I don't see him looking for teenage volunteers willing to shove a kilo of PETN up their ass and head for the nearest mosque.

Meanwhile in the church of the almighty dollar (aka Congress) the confession booth is open as bankers line up to cleanse their souls. Their penance is a 50% tax on bonuses they doubled just in case.

Here is your faux conservative. He is not a real one. Too bad Thomas Jefferson isn't around. He would have a field day with is asshole.

And Bananas! If Haiti had building codes that met ours, they would still be in the same position. Strike a 7.0 anywhere in the US and we are going to have the same damage. My house is new and it will not withstand a 7.0 That is a massive quake. The difference in intesnsity between a 6.5 like the one in Northern CA and a 7.0 is huge. There is not much that can survive a 7.0.

Further if Haiti was a wealthier nation then sure more of there buildings would be built better. Just because someone is a libertarian does not mean they are going to build their house out of sticks.

A once in a couple hundred year disaster is not an argument as to why we need a governing body to tell us we need a building permit to change a washer in kitchen sink faucet. This is the issue Libertarians have with things such as building codes along with all the wasted money spent for our government to tell us this.

The people of Haiti are smart, happy and live great lives with what they have. I can't say that most American are ultimatley happy which is the real reason for the debt bubble we are in.

I wish the people of Haiti the best in this.

Kdeith, your anonymous religious nutbag commenter is back. Please keep making more anti-religious posts so that he's exposed to the Devil's line of thinking.

I like how the female journalist (or whatever the hell she is) nods in agreement.

"OH yes, Pat! You're so right..if only they had not made that pact with the Devil...praise be..Say Pat...how do you know so much about pacts with Satan anyw.."

"And now a word from our sponsor.."

Pat drooling, stuttering, heaving, eyes rolling, makeup called in, more Viagra, another dose of facial powder, Indy 500 depends crew gets him changed out..and were back in 5...4...3...

"And thanks for keeping us on the air watchers. That number to donate once again - all you uneducated, wives of former UAW-employed, barely highschool educated, leeches, taxing your grandchildren into slavery - is on the bottom of your screen. Please call now. These depends aren't free ya know!!”

Nice thesis
However, in reality there is no such thing as a moderate Muslim.

"Strike a 7.0 anywhere in the US and we are going to have the same damage. My house is new and it will not withstand a 7.0 That is a massive quake."

A 7.0 earthquake like Loma Prieta, which hit a more populated area and killed all of 63 people?

"Further if Haiti was a wealthier nation then sure more of there buildings would be built better."

And yet nice foreign-owned hotels and the National Palace pancaked along with the mud huts. Probably just a coincidence that the monied elite had the same problem.

"Just because someone is a libertarian does not mean they are going to build their house out of sticks.

Yes, but they may occasionally build their arguments on sand :p

AL, my heart goes out to the people of Haiti as well. I hope all us Sashers can agree on that much.

OK religious nuts, I kinda paid attention in Sunday school:

"Else, if thou wilt not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses: and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are." --Exodus 8:21

Need I remind you that the French counterinsurgency against their slaves failed due to heavy losses from Yellow Fever, a disease spread exclusively by mosquitoes, which are, as you surely know, members of the Order Diptera--otherwise known as the flies. Discuss.

Angry Leprechaun says: "The people of Haiti are smart, happy and live great lives with what they have."

If I were drinking a glass of milk it would have come out of my nose.

Wow!!! Your ignorance is staggering.

Angry Leprechaun said...

My point is people do not need money to be happy. Hatians have an oppressive gov that rules their life and they make do with what they have. As oppressive there gov is they still do not have good housing or building codes as Bananas point out. So if Bananas is going to use this as an agrument as why libertarians are wrong and we need more gov, then he is way off base. The Haiti gov, or elite, pushes as much gov on it's people as it can afford to.

I used to work with a lot of Haitians when I was a nurse in Florida. They have a rebellious, resentful culture.

It's due in large part to their national history. On one hand, they're proud of being the only nation in history where slaves successfully overthrew their overlords. But they replaced the French masters with their own people who were as venal as the French. (To say nothing of the American imperialist invasions and dominance in the 20th Century.)

Consequently, the average Haitian has always been screwed into the dirt by the people above them. As a nurse in nursing homes, I had to supervise the nursing assistants (i.e. diaper changers.) I wasn't a prick -- I'd pitch right in with the messes and turning the patients, etc. -- but the Haitians were always more sullen, suspicious and "who gives a shit?" than the Jamaicans or other Caribbean islanders. Me being the white boss-man, I copped their 'tude.

I would not classify Haitians as happy by any means on their half of Hispaniola. Their sad country is a good example of why "no-government libertarianism" doesn't work. In the absence of intelligent authority, thugs and land-rapers steal everything, cut down all the trees, build crappy houses and the place turns into a shitheap.

Maybe Haiti is a look at America's future.

It's sad, really sad, however, I wouldn't want that type of disaster on U.S. soil.

If people want to support the humanitarian effort, please do so but the government here needs to continue to deal with our problems here!!!!

Libertarians are not anrchist and it does not mean we are for no rules.

Haiti is a prime example of a government that has stopped working for its people. This disaster gives us a chance to glimpse a world w/o government "interference," i.e. a world w/o building codes, erosion control, emergency services, etc. The a-holes that built those hotels that collapsed on hundreds of people have more money than all of us Sashers put together.

We don't need more government, but the best parts of our government do exist for a reason and we should keep those parts strong lest we see our problems magnified (e.g. the housing bubble).

Hard-core Libertarian fundamentalists will never admit this, but some things are too important to be left to the market.

And since independence the poor poor Haitian people have been continuously help down by the White Man!
It is not the Haitians’ fault that they can’t control their population growth… after all the White Man never told them about the connection between sex and children.
Not their fault that they murder one another at an astounding rate… the White Man taught them to use machete in the fields.
Not their fault that just as in New Orleans the Haitians first response to natural disaster is to go on a looting spree and bring out the guns… what they gonna do, White Man’s tv is off the air.
We just need to bring all the poor poor Haitians to America…
why just ask Miami how that has worked out.
But this time let’s dump then on Harvard and Yale and Princeton and let the pointy heads there contend with the rape, murder, and robbery.
Oh and fill the White House with the criminals Obambi is dumping on the rest of America. I’m sure a couple hundred Ton Tons will have lots to teach Barry’s girls!
